I saw the first half of Gattaca today for the first time. I thought that it was interesting but sloooooow. I’ll be honest, I could only sit through the first half, but I really want to know how it came out.
Anyone willing to tell me what happens to the murder investigation and whether he goes to space or not? Stupid internet is full of plot summaries that only go up to the point I watched.
No spoiler tags; the thread title should make it obvious there’s spoilers within
From http://www.moviepooper.com/
The detective is Anton, Vincent’s (Ethan Hawke’s) brother. The Director (Gore Vidal) committed the murder. The Director commits suicide rather than be captured, and Vincent gets to go on the space mission.
Far be it from me to spoil such a wonderful ending. It really is very emotional.
I’ll tell you this though; he does make it into space. But there’s so much more to the movie!! The developing realtionship with him and his “valid” brother, and ((argh, I can’t remember any names except Vincent, I think the other guy’s name was Jerome:confused: )) the one who helped Vincent out was so…
Well…I’m not going to tell you. You should just watch the rest of the movie.
I think Doug may have missed an important clue on this. During the opening credits, all the G’s, C’s, T’s and A’s are a different color in the people’s names. Then GATTACA comes up and it’s all that color. So while I don’t think anyone seriously believed it might be a coincidence, the moviemakers seemed to be saying pretty clearly that it’s not.
The Director doesn’t commit suicide. He turns himself in once he’s certain that Vincent’s mission can’t be stopped. Jerome commits suicide after Vincent leaves (by burning himself in that fire that cleans the shower).
It’s been while since I saw the flick, but I think Donut is right and the stuff from Moviepooper is wrong. I don’t remember the Director committing suicide but I do remember the roommate (Jude Law) killing himself.
My problem with the movie is the scene with ethan hawke on the treadmill. I just don’t think you can keep a calm face and look relaxed when your heart is going 190 beats per minute all wacky like…
You guys neglected to spoil the best part of the ending.
As Ethan Hawke is about to board the ship, there’s one final test to see if he’s invalid. He wasn’t expecting it, and he’s not prepared.
The doctor takes a urine sample from him, and starts talking about his (the doctor’s) son. turns out that the geneticists who engineered this son didn’t get it right, and he hopes, in the future, being an “invalid” won’t matter.
At that moment, the screen flashes Ethan Hawke’s true identity, and the doctor turns off the screen, and says, “A word of advice: righties don’t hold it in their left hand.”
Hawke boards the ship, and no one’s the wiser, except the doctor.
The ending of the movie (like the rest of the movie) is incredibly stupid. You better not think about anything raised in this film – it’s all complete nonsense pretending to be deep. But if you think about it, you’ll find the entire situation preposterous, inconsistent, and ultimately, it undercuts every single point it attempts to make.
