Recommend good SNES games

On an impulse today I decided to buy a Super Nintendo from the used game store down the street. It came with Super Mario World, and I also got NBA Jam (Not the type of game I usually play, but I had such fun playing it as a kid.). I plan on getting a few classics (Final Fantasy III definitely, possibly Megaman X, Mortal Kombat...). What games are truly worthwhile that I may have missed. Keep in mind that there's at least 3 used game stores within a 10 minute drive from me, and I have an ebay account, so finding them should be no huge task. Suggest away!

Crono Trigger! But I tell you, that one will not be an easy task to find, nor will it be cheap.

Top of my list is Super Punch-Out. Still the most entertaining boxing game I have ever played.

Seconded. I HAVE Crono Trigger, for both my SNES and my PS systems (it will play on PS1 or PS2). Definitely one of the best games out there. Great music, and not too many characters. And a killer story. I could never master the drinking contest without an autofire controller, though.

You should pass on Secret of Evermore and Illusion of Gaia, though. Secret of Evermore had a so-so story, but it wasn't up to Square's usual standards. Illusion of Gaia was so full of moral lessons and new age mysticism that it was nauseating.

Chrono Trigger. One of the greatest games of all time, not just greatest RPGs.
Final Fantasy III and II, also great RPGs.
Legend of Zelda: A Link To the Past.
Super Metroid.
Super Mario Kart. (The original is still lots of fun!)
Super Mario All-Stars (SMB 1, 2, and 3 from the NES with updated graphics and a save option!)
Castlevania IV.
Yoshi's Island.
Super Street Fighter 2.

You'll have many happy hours with all of those.

I second Super Mario Kart. This is my favorite game ever, on any gaming system.
Kirby's Dream Course is a lot of fun too!

You can't go wrong with any of the games already mentioned before.

You could also get:

Top Gear
Final Fight
Contra III
Donkey Kong Country

Let me be the first to say: Starfox!

So good, it's worth buying a SNES just to play it.

Get Super Metroid!!!

Playing that game is like having a silicon orgasm.

One of the best games ever.

Just thinking about it has made me decide that I'm going to bust my SNES out of storage just to play that game.

Fucking rocks.

Period.

And in case you missed it, that's Super Metroid.

All of the Final Fantasy games for old consoles are collectors items now, and hard to find. Check out Ebay and you'll see what I mean.

Ack! I totally forgot to mention Kirby SuperStar! One of the greatest 2D action-adventure games of all time. I'd rank it higher than Yoshi's Island and right alongside (if not better than) Super Mario World! It is that damn good.

See if you can find Outlander. You play a Mad Max sort of charcter going from town to town, shooting bikers with your shotgun. You also fight bikers in town while foraging for fuel & ammo.

Yeah, it's crazy. Unless you just have to have the cartridges, I would suggest buying the Playstation re-releases. Especially since it's so much nicer being able to save properly.

I may have my boxes mixed up, so forgive me....I thought Legend of Zelda was an original NES game, not SNES.

But if SNES is what I think it is -- then ditto for F-zero, Mario Kart. Also recommended:

Bubsy
Zombies Ate My Neighbors

I can't believe we got this far into the thread and no mention of Secret of Mana.

Best. Action RPG. Ever.

I'll also put in a second in on Earthbound and Contra III. Quirky RPGs and fantastic shooters never go out of style.

Let me also suggest Smash TV. If you like Contra III, you'll love Smash TV.

Chrono Trigger was my first thought too! I still have my old one somewhere at home. I only wish that my SNES still worked!

I also loved The Secret of Mana. It was great and I would play it again if I find another SNES.

Nice. We both thought of the same game at the same time!

Another game that I had forgotten about is Super Bomberman. I spent so much time on that game...and I can't remember if I ever beat it.

Secret of Mana rocks, as does Seiken Densetsu 3.

Also, check out NBA hangtime. It's an N64 port to SNES, but it's still 100x better than NBA jam.

Who cares? Four player was where that game was at!

Good call, we seem to have pretty similar tastes in games.

No one's mentioned the Lufia games yet... especially the second one. Second on all of the great RPGs already mentioned, of course.

I always end up playing games like Gradius and U.N. Squadron too much when I pull my SNES out, but I think that's more a result of them being mindless and relaxing than good

-K.

I always thought UN squadron and Gradius 3 (best video game music ever!) rocked.

I have a question.

There was a shooter (the view was overhead, not side) and it had a ton of mode 7 in it. I think it started with the letter “T”, but I can’t recall. Damn it was soooo good.

So much mode 7

Since nobody has mentioned it yet, I'll throw another one out there that should be fairly cheap and easy to find:

Super Star Wars

I'd avoid Super ESB and Super ROTJ, but the first one is really great.

I personally rather liked it, probably because of the mythic story invovling all those interesting places on earth such as the Pyramids, Ankor Wat, the Nazca lines, Machu Piccu, the Great Wall and Easter Island(otherwise known as MU).

Terraenigma is pretty much a sequel, at least in style if not in story. Push the history of the world along by killing things.

Final Fantasy Anthology, the one with 5 and 6, is on the PlayStation 2 "negative list", meaning that it is one of a handful of games not guaranteed to work properly on a PS2. In this case, you are likely to have graphical corruption on the menu screen, and you may also have problems saving.
