Oddly enough, if I recall my SDMB history correctly, the Great Debates forum description originally stated that one of the "discussions of the great questions of our time" to be discussed in the forum was "Kirk v. Picard."

Later, that type of discussion was proper in the IMHO forum. Finally, Cafe Society came along to take those types of discussion.

Well, I take no position on those particular captains. But Star Trek: TOS is better than Star Trek: TNG -- because it's just not Star Trek without the overacting! I mean, in the original series, even the fucking Vulcans were hams!

Of course, Mal Reynolds was far superior to all of them.

There are hundreds of reasons, but the main one is that he doesn't wear his PJs to work.

Oh, come on. Jonathan Frakes (Cmmr Ryker) is a classic example of overacting. He's atually painful to watch sometimes.

Luckily for us he's a better director/producer. Keeps him out of the camera eye.
Also. It seems to me that Brent Spiner(sp?) did most of the oddball acting in this series. And do not tell me that Gates McFadden did not over act the Mommy.

My reaction exactly! Yelling while standing completely still, cocking his head every time he turns a corner...

[slight hi-jack] In high school, I did theater, and in one play, we were supposed to have an earthquake or some damn thing, requiring us on act like everything around us was jostled. This consisted of us stumbling around, flailing our arms. We referred to this technique as "the Star Trek Wobble."

I was going to consider throwing all the Trek captains in a no-holds-barred brawl, but then I realized that the first thing Kirk would do would be to seduce Janeway, and my mind overloaded...

What I found tragic about him is that the writers tried SO HARD to give his character a personality.

But they never came close.

Feh. Kevin Sorbo was a better spaceship captain than either of those two jokers. And believe me, that's not an endorsement of Andromeda. You want a real matchup? Malcolm Reynolds v. John Sheridan. Those were a coupla bad-ass mofos with spaceships.

Bad-ass mofos, yes. But equally bad-ass or mofo-ish so far as spaceships are concerned? 'Fraid not - Serenity wasn't armed. Put her against anything with, you know, *weapons* on it, and all Malcom could do is run.

The question wasn't "Who has the better spaceship," it was "Who was the better captain." Sheridan, by the end of his series, was President of the Earth-Mimbar alliance and had the resources of both interstellar nations at his disposal. Mal was a smuggler with a second-hand freighter. So, yes, advantage to the guy in command of a space navy.

But all else being equal, I'd give the edge to Mal. Because he's, you know... cooler.

As for bad, wooden acting, nothing beats that guy who played Data!

Sorry but no one can beat the Zapper. He's the man with sexlexia and a lovenasium.

He's survived Snu snu and defeated the people of the Gandhi nebula. Let's see anyone else lay claim to those victories.

But wait, there's more! He went from captain to 25-star general in eight episodes!

Time Warp

The Kirk vs Picard debate is absurd. It must be a thing among STAR TREK fans who are not Sci-fi fans.

Kirk was SIXTIES. Compare Kirk and Spock to Napolean Solo and Ilya Kuriyakin in THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.

I don't doubt that the captains on capital navy ships are more like Picard than Kirk.

Sorry to switch media but the best SF commander i've seen is Miles Vorkosigan hands down.

If 'they' ever get that series of books onto the screen in a non-lame way it would be truly heroic.

Yeah? You think it could stand up to a little Wave Motion Gun action? I think not. Yamato all the way, baby!

And don't forget the nuclear-bomb-level Omidirectional Barrier system. Shoot at the SDF-1 enough times, and you'll wish you hadn't!

Major Steuben came from the highly civilised ancient colony of Newland. Steuben was a classic sociopath. It was not that he was wicked or mentally ill but simply that he lacked any ability to empathise with anyone else and there was a hole in his thinking where most people have a conscience. In the wrong circumstances, logic could cause him to commit acts that most people would find evil. Steuben also happened to be a natural gunfighter. He was a slender attractive man, always immaculately dressed in hand-tailored clothes, who made no secret of his homosexuality. This appearance sometimes led stupid people to try to bully him. After one duel to many, where he killed the son of the city governor, Steuben found it expedient to leave Newland. He drifted across the galaxy, living on inherited wealth until he was recruited into the Auxiliary Regiment of Friesland.

After several attempts by the rebels on his life plus some unsavoury non-combat incidents with some of his troopers, Colonel Hammer decided he needed a disciplined security detachment of military police. In the urbane, educated, utterly ruthless Steuben, the Colonel found just the man to lead them. The security detachment grew to four combat car platoons, known officially as A Company, and to the rest of the Slammers as 'The White Mice'.

Steuben was completely loyal to Hammer, as only a lonely man can be to his first love, and would carry out almost any act to protect his Colonel's interests....Loyalty turned to jealousy as Hammer came to need and rely on many other people when Colonel Hammer of the Slammers became President Hammer of the Friesland Republic.

Joachim Steuben started to become a dangerous embarrassment....He was reported killed by a pistol blast in the back; no one was arrested for the crime.
