1. Does anybody know when The Life Aquatic is scheduled to come out in theaters? IMDB doesn't say anything but that they're working in post-production.

2. Does anybody know why his DVDs are so darn expensive? I really wish I could buy them, but right now they're way too pricey for me. The Rushmore Criterion Collection is priced at $35.00, and The Royal Tenenbaums Criterion Collection is $25.00. Even the LOTR collector's editions weren't that expensive. I guess I'm stuck with low-quality DVD-rips.

Here is the non-Criterion version of Rushmore for $16.99. The Royal Tenenbaums only seems to be available in Criterion form, but it is good.

And, according to the message boards at wesanderson.org, the release date in the US is Dec. 25, but that isn't written in stone.

You can get The Royal Tenenbaums here for less than $20 shipped. Part of the reason it costs more it that it has a lot of packaging, and it's going to be more than LOTR because it'll never sell in the same numbers as LOTR

Well, since I already have the DVD-rip of Rushmore, I wanted to wait until the price of the Criterion Collection dropped to a reasonable price. I've been waiting since last year, but the price has been holding steady at $35.00. Thanks for the release date info, though. I can't wait.

I picked up a used copy of Tenenbaums for $10 at Blockbuster, and they had several more. You might try that if there's a BB near you.

The reason Criterion Collection versions of movies are so expensive is because Criterion is a company completely separate from any single movie studio.

Usually studios put out DVD's (and often substandard ones, at that) Criterion has to pay the studio to use the movie, and this ups the cost of the DVD. Note that Criterion has been around since laserdiscs, and they generally put out very high quality products.

Criterion discs are always more expensive than the non-Criterion edition.

They're also worth it.

I know you didn't mention it, but I got Anderson's Bottle Rocket for $15 at Best Buy. I surely do wish Criterion would release a vamped-up version of it, though.

How would you rate Bottle Rocket in comparison to his other films? I haven't seen BR yet only because I haven't had the chance yet. If it's definitely worth a DVD buy, I'll do some research to see if they're going to come out with a collector's edition. If they aren't, maybe I'll just grab a copy off eBay.

A good first effort but not worth buying in my opinion. And I love Wes Anderson.

Just to second what Tangent said. If your not opposed to buying a used DVD try video chains like Hollywood Video (my local one is still covered up with copies of RT thy're trying to sell off) or music, games, or video retailers that sell used DVDs. My local GameStop, for example, usually has copies of RT mixed in with the action, anime, blockbuster, martial arts and utter crap people trade in.
