Concert CDs

I saw the Pixies in Winnipeg tonight, and after the show cds of the concert were available (about 20 or 30 minutes after it was over.)

Is this a new thing, or have bands been offering live cds the same night for some time? It seems like a great way for the band to at least get some money from bootleg sales.

I think this is a first.
I had an idea of starting a club along these lines once but in my model, the CD would be posted to ticket holders at a later date. Of course, it was only ever an idea.

Out of interest, how was it organised?
One CD per ticket or could you buy as many as you wanted?

The (Grateful) Dead is currently doing this, but you have to wait a few days for the CDs in the mail.

In fact, they’ve stopped allowing people to tape off the soundboard. The tapers are not pleased.

I have heard of this before and it sounds like a great idea to me. I just wish some of my favorite bands would take the fans’ less-than-overt hints to do the same.

Pearl Jam has been doing this since the 2000 tour. As soon as possible after a concert, un-remastered mp3s of the show are posted to their website, and fans have an option of buying remastered cd’s of every concert they perform, usually available about a week after.

I got lucky though, my one PJ show got a DVD video release (7/10/03 NYC … most amazing concert I’ve ever seen!)

marky33: I think there was a limit of two per ticket-holder. A voucher was purchased before the show ($30) and then exchanged for the disc (2-disc set, actually) about 1/2 hour after it ended.

The company that did it was disclive.

We listened to part of it on the way home last night - it sounded surprisingly good.

Thanks for that Pipeliner - i bought a couple just now. Surprised you could get them without being at the gig.

Barenaked Ladies are doing something similar to this on their current tour. You have to buy them from this website though.

Paul Kantner’s current incarnation of Jefferson Starship has been making CDs of their shows available the same night for about a year now.

At the last moe. show I saw, they had CDs available afterwards.

With their current tour, Metallica posts each show online in either MP3 or some other format (there are two choices, I just don’t remember what the second is). IIRC it’s about fifteen bucks for each show.
