More emoticons needed

How do we get some more emoticons for better expression? I’d like to see some for:

  1. Shrug
  2. ROFLOL
  3. LOL

Occasionaly there is a vote for a new one.

Including your suggestions I’d like to see a drool smiley, or a puke smiley.

I could do with a “whistling innocently” smiley and a “shifty-eyed” smiley. But I think we should get rid of a couple (coughJewishguy) to keep it at a round dozen.

<ping>

Remember, Admins (Lynn) when I suggested that when things have died down we have a smiley vote, and you replied in the affirmative?

So, have things died down?

We have those, basically.
ROFLOL is this guy:
And LOL is this guy: :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d like to see a better :o embarrassed guy. I think it looks like he’s yawning.
A puking one would be good.

Actually  is ‘big grin’ which may not necesarily mean rolling on the floor laughing out loud. And :stuck_out_tongue: is sticking the tongue out (it just looks like lauging)
Therefore, their meanings are misunderstood when used. If someone uses :stuck_out_tongue: to laugh with someone that person might think they are being raspberried at.

Excellent. So, we have removed language to create pictograms, so that there is less confusion about meaning… and those selfsame pictograms are now causing confusing.

I think we need a little smilie face to represent, “Welcome to the Straight Board Message Board, Insert Name Here, we’re glad to have you with us.”

One with “mad” eyebrows, crossed eyes and a stupid smile, to use after reading or writing an unquestionably bizarre statement (for example, I read that the Duke of Monmouth was beheaded, but when it was noted he had no portrait his head was sewed back onto his body and a portrait–now in the National Portrait Gallery in London–was painted. [appropriate emoticon]
As in the message board for www.snopes.com , a weeping emoticon, with tears and half-closed eyes.
A similar emoticon with tears and a smile; for expressing emotions when a seriously-ill friend has recovered.
A “sigh” emoticon, with mouth in a frowning grimace, to express a glum feeling.
A nauseous emoticon, with eyes shut and tongue out.
A “learned” emoticon, with a smile and a mortarboard,. (I sdrew this emoticon, along with a heart symbol, on the jacket for the Ray Conniff love song “Today” from the mid-Sixties.

Here’s a forum with a huge number of similes that we could pirate from.

If anyone’s noticed, I’ve commented on numerous occasions (in numerous forums) that we need a “devilish” emoticon - a red smilie ( ) with mad eyebrows ( ), and maybe two horns. Or a mad emoticon ( ) with a smile ( ), and two horns. Same thing.

If I’ve ever needed such an emoticon, I’ve gone old-school with >:-) Unfortunately, depending on someone’s system configuration, it doesn’t always look right. (It doesn’t look quite right to me, in fact.)

And I second the opinion that the embarrassed emoticon ( :o ) looks more like a yawn or, if your mind is in the gutter, something else entirely. Maybe if it had eyes like the “roll eyes” emoticon ( ), it would look better. The color’s right though.

I am also uncertain as to the use of the “tongue” emoticon ( :stuck_out_tongue: ). I suspect the original intention of it was to convey a good-natured ribbing. But a humour scale of  :stuck_out_tongue:  does make sense.

I don’t like the “putz” emoticon (which I won’t even insert into this post) just because of the word balloon. It just looks awkward and ugly compared to most other emoticons. I don’t like the jewish emoticon ( ;j ) either, which just reeks of fan-service.

Anyhoo…

I’ve always liked this character set…

The putz emoticon is in memory of one of the most beloved members of the board who passed away a few years ago, Wally. I would not be happy to see that one go, as it always reminds me of him, and makes me smile.

I for one think there are more than enough emoticons already, but it’s no skin off my back if others want more. I guess this is my 2 cents (CDN)/

I will suggest to the other moderators that we disallow alphanumeric characters in future, and expand the emoticons to cover the full vocabulary range.

I think we should force everyone to use the “dancing men” code of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It combines the best parts of text and emoticons into one nice package.

If there should happen to be another smilie election, I would hope that “none” would be one of the candidates.

Sounds like a plan, Dex. :stuck_out_tongue:

A few fave moties that I miss on the Dope …

Hmm…personally, I could do without the animoticons (is that a word?). I prefer mine to be static; moving ones are too distracting.

Y’know, I was completely overlooking the fact that emoticons on the Dope are never animated! :smack:

(Need my “bagonhead” motie here … one which I seem to use all too often on other boards. )

Absolutely agree. Animated thingies in text are awful.

I wouldn’t mind more emoticons for a wider range of (ahem) “expression”. But I absolutely loathe animated anything on my web page. There is sooooo much of the web that is unreadable to me (at least until I hit [Esc]) because there’s animated jumping zinging whooshing crap all over the place. Just another reason why I love this message board!
