Giving out cigars after your baby is born

well, you guys past my first test post. im impressed. but here is the second round.

why do fathers classically pass out cigars after their baby is born? movies, books, even in practice it isn’t uncommon for a father to bust out a box of cigars and pass em out in the wait room of the hospital. where did this idea come from, what are it’s origins?

if you guys get this my third round is a good one…

I’ll bump this, & add a tidbit.

In a Star Tek novel, Scotty passes out cigars when his sister gives birth. He hands a cigar to Spock, who asks your question, and then answers it by claiming that the carcinogens are so dangerous, that it constitutes a lottery to see who dies to make room for the newborn, & prevent overpopulation. Needless to say, he returns the cigar…

Cigars historically have not been a cheap commodity. And after the birth of a child a father would give out expensive cigars. Years ago almost all men smoked, at least occasionally. The birth of a child was seen as a special moment worth celebrating. Thus smoking a cigar with a new father was seen as a form of a salute. Note this custom predates cancer warnings. Cigars weren’t seen as a health risk.

hmm, well i guess so was booze. you certainly would celebrate/salute a fellow guy if you had a drink with him, so why did fathers choose cigars?

Practical purposes: they were easy to hand out. You bought a box of them and you’d have plenty to give people. Plus they were easy to carry, easy for the recipent to hold and take with him.
