An inquiry about a strange & mysterious name for a woman.

Asenath.
Spelled ASENATH. Asenath. Pronunciation uncertain.

A woman’s personal name, not a family name.
May be connected with New England.
May be connected with Egyptian Religion.
May be connected with Babylonian Religion.
May have Goth connotations/connections.
May be connected with the author H.P. Lovecraft, though I doubt that he originated it. (This is rather less important that the other aspects.)

Any data, including origins, myths, folklore, meanings, & links thereto greatly appreciated.

Egyptian name, Biblical origin. Wife of Joseph, he of the coat of many colors.

That was fast, apt & accurate!

You gotta love the SDMB!

Many thanks, Fear Itself.

This is the same as the common Israeli name OSNAT.

I’m dying to know why you wanted to know.

From the Biblical source, it’s also become a Hebrew name. While it’s not the most common name in use, it’s definitely not unheard of by any stretch.

My wife had a classmate with that name.

Zev Steinhardt

Probably because it’s a highly unusual name, at least in the United States.

Damn. I was reponding to Yllaria. Zev snuck in there on me :o

It was used in the H.P. Lovecraft story, The Thing On The Doorstep.

Ahhh. I don’t think I remember that one. Which is a good excuse to look it up. Thanks.
