Somehow Incubus has become a young woman's Mr. Right
Not twenty-four hours after I updated my okcupid profile photos to clearer, friendlier, smilier
photographs, a woman from Fresno, California sent me a message saying she really liked the way I looked, particularly my smile I messaged her back, and eventually talked to her on okcupid's instant messenger. This transitioned into lengthly AIM conversations. The AIM conversations, in turn, transitioned into lengthly long-distance telephone conversations. The telephone conversations, in turn brought up the concept of meeting each other. She suggested a Mexican restaurant in Fresno, Sal's. Thanks to some arm-twisting, I was able to get the day off from my tutoring job, so that I could leave for Fresno as early as possible (its a long drive, but doable for me). We initially agreed to meet at 6 PM. I had hastily written myself directions to get to the restaurant. Just GETTING to Fresno was a misadventure in itself. In the directions, I had incorrectly stated 'Take 101 North' when it should have said 'Take 101 South'. Stupid me, in my excitement, didn't even realize I was going the wrong way for some time. Around when I was in Redwood City I began to get worried; San Francisco was 25 miles away, but I knew that Fresno was southeast of San Jose so I didn't think I was going in the correct direction. I phoned my friend who pointed out to me that I had spent the last forty minutes driving in the wrong direction At first I freaked out. Not only would I have to go all the way BACK, I would also have to fight rush-hour traffic to do so. I had left at 3:45, and crawling my way back South, it was already 5:00. I called her up and explained the mistake, and told her that due to the delay, I probably wouldn't get there until 7:30-8 PM. She was okay with it, and I tried desperately to make up for lost time once I got out of the Bay Area. This proved more challenging than I thought, as a dense fog made things difficult and once again there were many places where the fog was so dense I was crawling my way along. EVENTUALLY, I made it to Fresno. It took me over 4 hours, due to screwups, traffic, and fog but I made it. I met her for dinner and even though the trip there was horrible the date was absolutely perfect. She showed me around Fresno, and we took a walk around her community college. Both of us are pianists, and she was very interested in hearing me play, so we found a practice room that was unlocked and I played her everything I knew by memory. She absolutely loved it. We were thinking about going to play pool after dinner, but we never made it to the billiards hall, heh heh. Even my huge mistake early on worked in my favor; she was really really pleased that despite giving myself what amounted to a 90-minute delay on 101, I was still willing to continue on to Fresno, despite all the difficulties in getting there, and when I finally saw her there, greeted her with a warm smile and a hello. I stayed in Fresno very late; far later than I planned. I knew that if I drove the route properly, I could cover the distance in 2 hours. The reason I stayed late is...well...because I enjoyed her company very much . I left Fresno at 2 AM and made the long drive back, having to face the pea-soup fog once more. I finally got back here in San Jose at 4 AM. I am very tired, I'm going to turn in now because I have to get up for work tomorrow morning in 5 hours (crazy, I know. Some people have a way of doing that to ya ). Before I left Fresno, she invited me to meet her family, so I am going back Sunday after work (this time I won't come back insanely late)

Update: Tomorrow I'm going to drive down to Fresno again after work and visit her at her house. She wants to introduce me to her parents. When I played "Frankie and Johnnie" for her in the music room of her community college, she said that her mom LOVES the song and she asked if I could play it for her at her house. I said sure! It is a nice little ego boost for me, as I'm practicing for a recital but kind of feel that nobody cares; my parents often forget I'm playing in a recital and my friends totally do not care about my piano-playing ability, which sometimes makes me feel like its a little pointless if nobody else can enjoy it with me. So to have this girl LOVE listening to me play makes me really happy and I'm more than pleased to perform for her and/or her parents. Also, we're making plans for doing something during Chinese New Year, maybe seeing a parade or something in San Francisco; she's already planning on taking a few days off and she's going to probably spend the night at my house (to spread out all that driving over 2 days, makes it a little easier since Fresno--->San Francisco is quite a haul going back and forth. |

Hmmm... Not to be a spoil sport, but better safe than sorry. If it sounds too good to be true and all that....
First of all, make sure she doesn't have a penis. It rhymes with pianist after all.

The whole movie is in Esperanto, and Shatner speaks the same way in Esperanto too. And his accent was terrible.

Update:
Sunday evening I planned on visiting her and her parents at her parents house. I was supposed to time it so I got to her house not long after she got back from work. However, cruel fate stood to thwart my efforts once more. The problem arose on Pacheco Pass. This is a fairly narrow, 1 to 2 lane road that runs east-west across California. It goes through some mountains, and the whole area seems perpetually foggy. As if it weren't harrowing enough having to navigate a narrow, windy, foggy road (much like Highway 17 for other Cal Dopers who know what I'm talking about) there was an ACCIDENT that happened not long before I started down the road. When traffic first stopped, I immediately called my friend to see if he knew what was going on, so I could get an idea of what the delay was. He couldn't find out anything. I then left a voicemail message telling Ms Right that I was stuck in traffic, and would, unfortunately be delayed again, for an indermined amount of time, but would continue on and get to her house as quickly as I could. Traffic was stop and go for TWO HOURS which was spent agonizing over the fact that she had her mom cook me dinner and I was supposed to be eating with them, but instead I was stuck on a road that lost cell phone reception, zero radio reception, and no choice but to simply ride out the delay and hope it wouldn't take long. After what seemed like an eternity I reached the accident; seems a tanker truck jacknifed, blocking BOTH lanes...CHP was redirecting traffic past the wreck by going on the shoulder. After I got past that, I tried to haul ass as best I could to make up for lost time.Getting to her house took longer than I thought, and not just because of the accident. She lived much farther than the restaurant I had met her at, so when I thought I was 'almost there' when she called, worried about me, it turned out I was still 30 minutes away. She lived in a very rural area and combined with fog, made finding various streets difficult if not impossible. In the end her dad took her and drove his truck out onto the main road I was pacing back and forth on (trying to find their street in the fog), found him, and followed him back to their place. They set aside some food for me and I ate. I had been worn out from being on the road for over four hours, and hadn't eaten for some time. We watched a DVD with her brother, and I also played the piano for her family. Her brother asked me when I planned on leaving, and I sighed. My delay was so great, in order to get home at a not-even-remotely reasonable time I would have to pretty much turn around and go home as soon as I got there. I didn't really want to do that, in part because I wanted to spend time with her, and also because I had been driving for over 4 hours and the last thing I was looking forward to was several more hours of it, late at night. So I told them I'd probably just find a motel on the way back and sleep there, then continue home the following morning. I called my work and told them I wouldn't be able to come in Monday morning, that way I could get a full night's sleep and wouldn't have to rush to get home. Her mom invited me to stay the night with them, and I gladly accepted. They set out an air matress and I slept in the family room. The next morning I had a little quality time with her (she took half the day off school to spend the morning with me ) before I had to leave. Her father gave me directions back, which was MUCH FASTER than the way I had originally gone. I'm pretty confident that if I can dodge Bay Area traffic, I can probably cover the distance in 2.25 to 2.5 hours; still quite a lot but still a fraction of the driving time I've endured this weekend alone. Oh, and Eleusis, she is a woman. Trust me on that one

Way to go, Incubus!
Now that you've suffered the Slings And Torments Of Fate on the Pacheco Pass highway, you can return with her in better weather (beautiful scenery there!) and treat her to some garlic ice cream in Gilroy.

I talked to her earlier this evening, and she is going to visit me in San Jose!!!!
![]() She had Jury Duty this Wednesday, and thus had to take time off school/work to accomodate it. But surprise surprise! She was able to get out of Jury duty so she'll be able to drive over and visit for the evening (and spend the night! ) so I am very excited.

Well, this Wednesday it is looking like a repeat of last Sunday except here in the Bay Area. I hope she doesn't have as much trouble getting to my house as I have had getting to hers!
I do have to work, unfortunately but the upside is that my work shifts are short; she'll be arriving some time after I get done Wednesday evening and staying over till Thursday (YES!!! )Oh, and something -worthy: I talked to her on the phone last night, and she was mentioning how she tried calling me earlier. Apparently my cell phone fell out of my pocket in my car and was ringing and ringing and I didn't even know about it. Which is a drag because had I picked it up, she would have mentioned that she could have come over a day EARLIER because she didn't have school that day (darn!) oh well, plenty of more opportunities until then. She did point out to me that it is ok if we can't see each other EVERY day; it would just make the obvious scheduling conflicts that will arise that much harder to deal with. I myself am having to struggle with the fact that I scheduled myself so much work this month (because I thought I would be doing absolutely NOTHING in January) and now I'm kind of backpedaling on that by asking for time off. Time to adjust the February calendar!

Am I the only one that thinks something odd is going on here?
Second date, he meets the parents and is invited to stay the night by the parents? I hope you don't wake up in a bathtub full of ice and sans kidney, but in the meantime: congratulations. |
