How do I play the Orbix?

I picked up an Orbix at a thrift store and put some batteries in it. It's sort of like Simon, with blinking red LEDs that apparently you try to get to turn off.

Are there tips somewhere?
Are there hacks to make it into a decorative light?
Lastly, how do I turn it off without opening it up to take out the batteries?

This is a spherical thing about the size of a softball, that sort of looks like the thing that Luke was training against with his lightsabre? I have one of those. For the first game mode, the guaranteed shortest solution is very simple. Look at the spots around a button. If an even number of lights are on around the button, push that button. If an odd number are on, don't push that button. Pay no attention to the light corresponding to the button itself. Once you have done this for every button, you win.

I don't remember exactly how the other game modes play, but they're not generally that simple. As general advise, try to do things to make the pattern more symmetrical, or if it's already symmetrical, to keep it symmetrical. And learn to recognize patterns that you can remember how to solve.
