Resurrection of Online Texas hold 'em tournaments for Dopers only (revised thread)

Okay, its not much of a resurrection, since the first time I tried this it didn’t really take off. The reason it didn’t is because I couldn’t find an online poker room that allows private tournaments for play money. I think I found a way around this.

The first tournament is scheduled for Thursday 10pm est. If you want to join the “Dopers only NL HE” league and play in the first game, go to pokerroom.com and download the software. When you sign up use your Straightdope user name. It’ll be easier for us to keep track of one another this way. If its not available, just add some numbers to the end of it (I’m xrayvision88 and Otto is Otto4711). Then e-mail me before 5 pm est. Thursday so I know how many people are playing. If we get over ten interested Dopers, we’ll have to create two or more tables. Below are instuctions on what to do, so you might want to print this post.

On Thursday at 9:45 pm est., I will create a table and Pokerrom.com will name it xravision88’s HE. Log-in to the software between 9:45 and 9:55. In the upper left hand corner click on “lobby” and then click on “Account/Cashier (Website)”. Refill your play money and you should have $1000. Now you can close out of the website and go back to the software. In the upper right hand corner, make sure “Ring Games” is highlighted, not “Tournaments”. Now click on the tab labeled “Private Tables”. Scroll through the list of table names and double-click on the one titled “xravision88’s HE”. I’ll then accept you to join the table. You will then see the table. You will see the message “Click on any available seat to join the table” . Pick a seat (in future games we’ll use assigned seating). After you click on an empty seat you will see this message: “How much of your money ($1000.00) do you want to use at the table? (buy-in $100 to $1000)” Type in $1000. Then click “OK”. You will then get this message: “Click on SIT IN to be dealt in”. Do not do this. You will see these two options right below this message: “Auto Post Blind/Ante” and “Wait for Big Blind”, choose “Wait for Big Blind”.

At 10:00 I will click on “SIT IN” . The person to my immediate left should then do the same. The two of us will now be playing the first hand but not placing bets. Now everyone else can click on “SIT IN” and we’ll all be playing normally on the next hand. If you’re wondering why we have to do this, here is the reason:

Since pokerroom.com does not allow free tournament style play, we are modifying a ring game into a tournament. In a ring game, the instant two players are seated the dealing begins. Since there is no way around this, and it will be impossible for ten people to sit down at the exact same moment, we’ll have to start things off the way I described in the last paragraph. The person to my left and I will not be betting on this hand but we’ll be forced to play out the hand and play for the blinds. As soon as you see cards dealt on the table you can click on SIT IN. Yes, one of us will have a $10 or $20 advantage and the other player will have a $10 or $20 disadvantage. Not really a big deal since we are all starting out with $1000. In future tournaments two different people will be put into this position, so after many tournaments played everthing evens out.

Another adjustment we’re going to have to make to turn this ring game into a tournament, is we’re going to have to manually adjust the blinds. Here is how we’ll do that:

When its time for blinds to be increased (by keeping track of how many hands have been played) we do this: Everyone to the left of the big blind checks. When the option to bet gets to the small blind, he increases his bet to the new small blind amount (whether he wants to or not). Then the big blind increases his bet to the new big blind amount (whether he wants to or not). From there, the rest of the round is played normally. The only drawbacks are that we have to manually keep track of when blinds should increase ( not a big deal) and if anyone bets when he’s supposed to check, it kinda screws things up. IMing capabilities are included in the software, so we can remind each other not to screw up and after playing for a bit hopefully we’ll get used to the structure.
I believe Pokerroom.com only lets you refill your account with play money every 24 hrs., so don’t play in any other games on Pokerrom.com or you might not have a full $1000 for Thursday night’s tournament.

The blinds will start at $10 - $20 and we’ll increase the blinds manually after every 10 hands played. You might want to print this post so you can follow the instructions.

We are going to use the blinds schedule on this web page, except we have to skip level 2 and go straight to level 3. Here’s why:

Since the default blinds schedule is 10/20, once we want to raise it to 15/30 the software won’t let us. Once everyone checks after the big blind, the small blind won’t be able to raise to 15, he’ll be forced to see the big blind’s 20. So the small blind will bet 10, so he has a total bet of 20 and the big blind will bet 20, so he has a total bet of 40.

I know this is getting confusing but I think we’ll all catch on pretty quickly once we get things moving.

What fun is playing without bragging rights? Here’s how we’ll keep tally of each player’s official rank:

In a tournament with a full table (10 players), whoever comes in fist place gets 1 point, second gets 2 points etc. The first person to drop out of a game in play (whether on purpose or from technical difficulties) comes in last place at that table with 10 pts. Obviously the less points you have the better. If the person who comes in first place comes in seventh place in the next tournament, that person has a 4 pt. average. If someone else’s average is lower (better) than 4, the person ranked #1 after the first tournament is no longer #1. A player’s rank does not count until he plays in at least three tournaments. If there is less than ten players at a table, the scores received will have to be adjusted accordingly. If only 9 players are at a table, first place receives 1.11 points, second place receives 2.22 points, etc. If a player plays in three games and does great, and then never plays again, does his rank stand? Nah. If someone goes weeks and weeks without playing we’ll have to vote whether or not to abolish his ranking. As long as no one uses this as a way to get rid of a crappy ranking and then all of a sudden start playing regularly again. We’ll e-mail anyone who goes a long time without playing asking whether they plan on returning or not and see what’s up before deciding what to do.

Since Thursday night’s game will be the first, lets not make it official (no rank). Who knows what might go wrong. If it turns out that upping the blinds every ten hands makes the game too long/short, we’ll change it to a different amount of hands or go to a timed blinds schedule.

Well? Don’t just sit there. Go on over to pokerroom.com and start downloading. Then e-mail me for a reservation.

I made a major mistake in the OP:

What was I thinking? You can’t check. You have to either see the big blind or fold.

The only way I can see us getting around this is forcing an ante on each round and increasing the blind amounts manually, but that’s a bit extreme, no?

Anyone got any ideas?

Possible solution:

We ignore the blinds of the players that the software designates as the blinds .We consider this a forced ante. We force a small blind on the person to the left of the software’s big blind and we force a big blind to that person’s left. We will consider these two people the real big and small blind. This way, only two people are forced to ante on each deal. Not bad, eh?

To make this wok we’ll have to start the first blind schedule at 20/40 (and the software’s forced antes will be 10/20.

One possible suggestion. I haven’t had a chance to d/l the program yet so this may not work out, but hearme out.

Couldn’t we just open up a new room with the next tier in the blind schedule when we’re ready to up the blinds and we all quit the first game and sit at the next game? Seems like it’d be doable as long as everyone has the same starting bankroll and isn’t playing any side games or anything. That would get rid of alot of tha manual bookkeeping crap we’re struggling with. The only problem I can forsee is if players are seated randomly at the new table. But IIRC we get to choose our seats, so it shouldn’t be an issue.

Thoughts?

Not a bad idea, but the biggest problem is everytime we start a new game, two people are going to have play out the first hand and have everyone else click SIT IN while this is happening. Its not bad if that happens only once a tournament at 10/20, but it won’t be cool when software’s blinds are much higher. It also interrupts the flow of the game to keep shutting down tables and starting new ones with everyone in the same seat, trying to have the correct person deal, etc.

I should have made this a little clearer in the OP:

When I click on SIT IN and the person to my left clicks on SIT IN, we actually won’t be playing out the hand. Since the small blind will never see the big blind, his hand will be folded before the flop is dealt. The small blind shouldn’t click on FOLD until the time limit he has is almost up. This gives everyone a chance to click SIT IN.

Okay, I think I’m done being anal now.

Yeah, the sit-in problem is a little bit of a concern, however it’ll only really mater when we get to the really big blinds where there’s only one or two people left. at that point we might be able to work around it without changing tables.

Also, keeping the deal in the right spot won’t be an issue as long as we make sure the blinds are always bumped just right of first position. Seems like the first couple bumps when we still have 8-10 players and the blinds are still comparatively small would be easier using the new table.

I’m a novice player and the small blind/big blind thing is going over my head so I hope that you guys are patient in explaining this further 'cause I’m probably going to have to be reminded what to do every single time.

The only blinds shedules available for no limit are: 10/20 25/50 50/100 100/200

What happens when we start a new table at 100/200 while the table is still relatively full? Someone will have to sacrifice $100 and another person will be $100 richer without earning it. That’s a liitle much when we’re only starting at $1000.

Omniscient, so far you didn’t like my ranking system and wanted to change it to play money prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd only. Then you asked why I didn’t check in to Yahoo!. Then you didn’t like my idea of blinds every 10 hands and wanted to go by time. Now you want to have us all quit a room every blinds transition and reserve another room, have everyone seated in the same spot, and make sure the deal starts off in the correct place, and have someone have to sacrifice $100 when the blinds are at 100/200. I’m not saying I don’t appreciate suggestions but can you cool it a bit? Lets try tomorrow night as I outlined and then we’ll discuss what could use improvement and what possible solutions there are.

No problem, if you’re not sure what to do, there’s an IM system and someone will tell you. Tomorrow night is going to be a learning experience for everyone.

Ok, I activated my account when I found the code in my spamblocker. Can I download the software twice (on different computers) on the same account? I’m at my work computer now, but I will be using my home computer tomorrow. Don’t want to download anything until I’m sure. As you can tell, this will be my first online poker experience, since my faith in internet gaming is not at 100% yet. That’s why I have interest in this play money tournament.

Still using this clock website (mine is PST btw) for the 10:00pm EST join time, right? (Actually, my watch has already been set to this site.)

Yeah, thats why I was saying that when we got to the higher blinds we wouldn’t worry about changing tables since I presumed we’d be down to 3 players by the time we hit that point and it becomes easier to use the artificial blinds.

Fair enough. We’ll get a trial in and get a concensus from the participants.

Yeah, you can download the software on as many computers as you want. We don’t really have to use that clock anymore since we no longer have to worry about jumping a table. As soon as everyone is in the room, I’ll click SIT IN and the person to my left should then do the same. As soon as you see cards dealt to us, you can then click SIT IN. As long as everyone is in the room a few minutes before 10pm so we’re ready to go. Don’t forget to print the instructions in the OP.

It might be a good idea to print the blinds schedule on [url=http://www.homepokertourney.com/blinds.htm] this page also. We’re going to start at level 3, so just ignore level 1 and 2. You can cross out every blinds level that has gone by so you can always see what the current blinds are.

I know it seems like a pain in the ass, but its really no different than playing in a home game and having to keep track of the blinds. I have a good feeling that we’ll all catch on quickly and things will run pretty smoothly.

blinds schedule

More noob questions:

Are we shooting for a 2, 3 or 4 hour game with schedule?

When players end up dropping out, do they get the option to stay and watch?

Are we using the messaging that comes with the software or do I need to get and use some other IM service? (I’m a noob at that too)

I’m trying to be ready for this, and on time.

I really have no idea. I personally think 2 ain’t bad. After tomorrow night’s game lets discuss if it was too short or long.

I’m not sure. If we were playing in one of pokerrooms tournaments (which aren’t private) you’d get kicked out as soon as you’re out of money. I’m not sure what happens if you run out of money in a ring game. We’ll find out tomorrow.

Paying attention to who is saying what with pokerroom’s IM system is a bit difficult. Players comments are flying by quickly and the computer’s dealer is constantly commentating on the game. I think all players being linked to one another with AOL IM or another popular IM service is a great idea. Do you guys think you can have aol IM on your computer by tomorrow? If not, we’ll talk about doing that before the next game.

Cool. Looking forward to seeing you on the virtual felt battlefield.

I’ll dl the software tomorrow and see you guys there. I am definitely interested.

What’s the best IM for this situation…are they all the same basically?

Sidenote: I noticed Otto posted on the pokerroom forum about a conspiracy concerning a group (Jacks) using IM to message each other about other players playing tendancies…which is possible cheating, depending on how you look at it.

That won’t be an issue with us of course.

I think most IM clients are basically the same, but we’d all have to have the same one to communicate with one another.
