I’m doing a series of glass panels of mythical animals. I just finished a Unicorn.
I just drew out my pattern for Pegasus with the full moon behind him. My problem is, the only Pegasus image in my head is the logo from an (Standard??) Oil company with the “Flying Red Horse.”
My Bulfinch’s Mythology has only a line drawing. from that I’d guess dapple gray, but those spots might be feathers.
I’d rather not do white, since the unicorn is white.
The horse colors I have on hand are, brown, black, irridescent black, light bown/beige swirlly, white, a blonde yellow, and maybe gray. Of course I have every NOT horse color imaginable.
My Pegasus will not have bird wings, but more like a dragonfly’s. The moon behind him will be irridescent white or pale yellow.
Also, any suggestions for other mythical animals would come in handy.
Thanks for your help!
I have always pictured him as white. But I have no reason to believe that, that is just what was always in my mind.
How about gray, with shiny black wings, as you described? Or vice versa?
I always pictured Pegasus as white, but I think he’d look cool as a chestnut, too. Reddish-brown coat with blond mane and tail. If you can’t mix a red-brown, you could always do him as a bay or buckskin–brown or tan with black mane and tail.
I recommend white, with a different color for the wings. This will provide contrast, & improve your composition.
You used silver-colored metal in joining the glass together in the Unicorn. If you intend to use that again, I recommend yellow/golden colored glass, & dividing the wings into several large “feather” structures. Perhaps in two rows of “feathers”.
If you intend to make the wings the same color as the rest of the horse, use a different color metal around the wings, to highlight them.
I picture him as white, too.
Pegasus just showed up in Wonder Woman all black with red eyes. I believe it’s female, too.
I think the classic pegasus was visualized as white. However, if you want to give a contrast to the unicorn panel, you could portray it as a palomino and go with a cream-gold coloring with pearl-blue wings (which would fit the dragonfly wing idea very well), and do a white moon.
Well, I have glass scattered all over the glass room (I keep forgetting to call it a studio.) I think I’ve settled on roan. I have a piece of root beer colored bubble glass (it has small air bubbles ) and a swirlly root beer for the mane and tail. As far as the wings go, I’m going to do them like MoonFairy, as I said, more like dragonfly wings.
The moon behind is huge, with just the tips of the wings outside. The sky is cobalt blue, with some green hills in the distance.
Thank you for your suggestions. If anyone has any ideas for other mythical beasts, I’ll entertain them.
I’d like to do a dragon, but for some reason I can’t seem to draw one, so I’d need a good picture to adapt. If anyone happens to have one, I’d be thrilled to see it.
I’ll post a picture of Pegasus when I’m done.
What color is Pegasus’s parachute?
Roan sounds good. No actual horse is the bright red of the Mobil Oil Pegasus, but roan is a horse color. Maybe black tips on the trailing-edge feathers?
Really? :dubious: I hate to mention this, but …well…Pegasus isn’t an actual horse either.
Haw haw! Next you’ll be tellin’ me that Michael Jackson doesn’t exist! :dubious:
He doesn’t, that skinny white broad ate him.
I’ve been through the ancient texts for my book, and, as far as I can recall, nobody ever states Pegasus’ color.
For what it’s worth, every depiction I can recal either doesn’t specify his color (you know – sculptures and bas reliefs and the like) or shows him as white.
I always figured that the Pegasus was white. But that belief may partially be based on the logo of TriStar Pictures, which is a white winged horse which most likely fits the description of “Pegasus.”
If you are going to give Pegasus insect wings instead of bird wings, you’ve already given up any pretense at all of being historically accurate. You might as well color yours purple with alternating green spots for all it matters at this point.
Pegasus isn’t the only winged horse in mythology. Pelops was given a set of winged horses to pull his chariot, and in the vase paintings I recall, they’re black.
And then, there’s Pigasus.
Yes indeed. I gave a friend a flying pig, but she turned down the offer of one in glass.
“Never try to teach a pig to sing. It frustrates you and annoys the pig”
CalMeacham Thank you! I didn’t realize that Pegasus was the name of an individual, rather than a species of mythical animal, like a unicorn.
So, then I will just have to name my roan flying horse something else.
And by doing so appease Dan Norder for not choosing to be historically (mythologically?) accurate.
