I was watching Shawshank Redemption AGAIN this weekend and I was struck by the fact that the scene where Morgan Freeman is drinking beer on the roof of the prison looked JUST like a clip they’d use for the death montage at the Oscars.
I realized that I was watching the scene that WILL be used for Freeman’s moment the Oscar Ceremony after he dies. No doubt about it.
It has a poignant feel to it. It was visually impressive and it came from one of his best films.
It got me thinking about other (hopefully) healthy celebs. Assuming they don’t have a special tribute to the celeb (which I think cheapens the montage), what scene(s) will be used for today’s stars?
I figure Jack Nicholson’s will have to include the clip of him yelling “You Can’t Handle the Truth!” to Tom Cruise in A Few Good Men (even if there is no audio of the clip).
Any theories?
PS- No smart guy comments answering the Thread title’s question with “They Don’t Bury the Survivors!”
Some guys are gonna get montages, Eastwood for example. They will absolutely have to do “Do you feel lucky, punk? Well, do ya?” AND “Go ahead, make my day,” plus a clip or two from his later years (“Unforgiven,” “In The Line of Fire,” “Bridges of Madison County,” “Million Dollar Baby,”).
Hanks will have a “Forrest Gump” scene as well as a “Philadelphia” one.
David Patrick Kelly will have the bottle-clinking shot from The Warriors.
Kate Winslet will have the flying scene from Titanic.
Laura Dern will have the stepping-out-of-the-darkness shot from Blue Velvet.
If Haley Osment continues acting as an adult, they’ll twin the “I see dead people” closeup with a shot from something he did when he was at least 40, for maximum contrast. Otherwise, it’ll just be the ISDP shot, which they already can’t get enough of.
It’s anyone’s guess what they’ll choose for Johnny Depp. Maybe a grid of nine shots? Edward Scissorhands next to Ed Wood next to Capt. Jack Sparrow, above J.M. Barrie, next to Gilbert Grape…
Charles Lane: The scene from *It’s a Wonderful Life * where he tells off Lionel Barrymore
Paul Dooley: From Breaking Away “You’re not a cutter. I’m a cutter. You’re a cutter’s kid.”
Ann-Margaret: a montage from Bye Bye, Birdie, Carnal Knowledge and Grumpy Old Men.
Robert Redford and/or Paul Newman: They’ll both get a montage including the jumping scene from Butch Cassidy and the nose-touching signal from The Sting
Julie Andrews: Mary Poppins, Sound of Music and Victor/Victoria If the Oscars are on cable by then, they’ll also have the scene where she rips off her top in S.O.B.
