Fan fiction, again

A couple of years ago, I started this thread asking for good fan fiction links. The recommendations were great – I found a lot of stuff that was really good – so I thought we could do the same thing again and see what new stuff has turned up in the past two years.

In the previous thread, Cataclysm recommended a Harry Potter fanfic called Hinge of Fate which is the best fanfiction I’ve found yet. The author has written several really good stories, but this piece is her best.

I discovered an unabashed love for Baldur’s Gate fanfic; if you’re into that I recommend Tide of Destiny and its sequel-in-progress, Sowing Chaos.

So bring on the recommendations for whatever fandom you love, and feel free to pimp your own stuff as well. I’m looking forward to reading some of the suggestions.

The all-time best I have read is a LOTR (sort of) called Pottymouth . It is a Legolas/Eowyn romance set in modern-day times , with a lot of humor and angst , and SEX  . I highly reccomend it .

Don’t have any suggestions to make, but if someone could point me in the direction of some good Firefly fanfic I would be eternally grateful!

Oh, I love Hinge of Fate, it was my first SS/HG fanfic. I haven’t read all that much since HBP came out, mostly because I’m convinced I should reread the book first. I have tons of folders of favorites, but most of them are one shots.

I’ve always liked Echo’s fanfiction, she writes Harry Potter, BtVS, and perhaps some fandoms I don’t read. I haven’t checked up on her in awhile, last I heard she was taking care of her mother, but a quick look at her livejournal says she’s active.

Shifts by Fern is very popular. Complete too, as of Christmastime.

Fifteen Steps to Freedom is a little-known oneshot, Snape-centric. I like it, although it’s AU (Alternate Reality; non-canon) as of HBP.

Dirty Trousers by Skoosiepants, is an ongoing AU, a recent vein of the fandom aptly known as crack!fic for the types of AU situations characters are put into. It is omg!!eleventyone!!! good, and updated regularly. Skoosiepants herself is a genius. She also has an HP/N*Sync (!!) crossover, known as Don’t Feed the Squirrels. It sounds completely ridiculous and it is. But it’s also pure gold. May only appeal to the 90’s pop followers. (Hello, my name is Mia, and I was a tween.)

Know Your Rights by hackthis quotes The Clash. That is all you need to know. Ooh. And upon preview, not worksafe. Rated Disturbing by author.

The Annals of Terry Boot is hilarious. Funnily enough, rather In Character if you dismiss the fact that Terry Boot is a bit of a transvestite with blue hair. No, really. None of the other characters are like that either.
Tomorrow, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by November Snowflake is an awesome fic, and surprisingly subtle.

ab epistulis is by Autumn Lecroix, and later chapters may not be worksafe. Don’t recall. Fabulous plot though. Summary: A future fic that takes place when Draco is 30, living in Edinburgh, Scotland. Draco owns a bookstore and ends up developing a correspondence with the author of his favorite novel. Through a series of letters, they learn more about each other than either thought possible and end up forging an unusual relationship that would not have been possible 15 years ago.

Defining Marks by copperbadge (Sam Vimes) possibly the best Remus centric author in the fandom. Although the piece I linked to is not Remus-centric, his page lists all the stories he’s published on skyehawke. WARNING: This is a post-HBP fic and WILL contain spoilers. Read at your own caution.

BTVS

This nameless fic by glossy is great post-BtVS Xander fic. My favorite.

I have also shamelessly read Hitchhiker’s Guid to the Galaxy fanfiction, but at the moment can only find links to either non-existing fanfics or terribly funny slash ones with no point other than laughing. (Although that kind of reminds me of the book, minus the sake of the universe…)

I think everything I linked to is less than two years old. If not, then that explains my B’s in math and lack of timeishness. If you don’t think there’s fanfiction for a certain fandom, either google title + fanfiction, or see if there’s some truely awful stuff at fanfiction.net.

Well, there’s the little Daria slashfic links page I’ve been working on…

Shoot, and I just shut down the site a friend was hosting last week! I’ll see if I can cobble together a Geoshitties site or something, if you like MST3Ks.

A friend of mine runs Lexicon, the big-ol’-honkin’ Transformers fanfic archive. Good, bad, or otherwise, if you want giant transforming robots, it’s there.

I’m not egomaniacal enough to pimp my own stuff, so I’ll just say they’re available on my web site if anyone cares.

Miscellaneous Harry Potter recs. (Mostly mystery / adventure or humor; I don’t read much romance, although I’m willing to make an exception for Shifts, a rec which I heartily second.)

Man-Eaters of Kumaon by Ignipes. Young Remus Lupin goes to the Himalayas to track down a mysterious man-eating beast. I’ve never read anything quite like Ignipes’ version of wizarding India – it’s brilliant travel writing, but it also fits perfectly into the Potterverse.

Desk Duty by mosylu. A deliciously snarky Madame Pince deals with clueless students, carnivorous books, and Dolores Umbridge.

Herpetology by Andrea13 and Persephone Kore. In which Herpo the Foul, an ancient Greek Parselmouth, unexpectedly turns up in the Weasley family’s backyard.

Nymphadora Tonks and the Liquor of Jacmel by SnorkackCatcher. Tonks’ first case with the Aurors. Really inventive with law-enforcement magic and the quirky little details of Rowling’s world. Incomplete, but updated regularly.

Oblivious by Jess Pallas. A terrific werewolf yarn, with lots of twists, turns, and cliffhangers. (While this was written well before Book Six, the author’s version of Remus Lupin’s backstory is astonishingly close to what we learned in HBP.)

The Most Grievous and Lamentable Tragedie of the Death of Lord Voldemort by rowen_r. In which Voldemort is defeated in iambic pentameter, with the aid of a small table lamp. A brilliant parody of Harry Potter and Jacobean revenge tragedy.

The Knight of the Mirrors by Mincot. A teenaged Sirius Black (who really does come off as “exceptionally bright,” for a wonder!) has an encounter which forces him to do a bit of soul-searching.

Oh, and you can find some of my own stuff (the ones I’m willing to avow in public) here if you’re curious.

Silence of the Deep Pirate-gasm at its finest. Incomplete, but addictive.

Anyone know of any decent Batman fan fic?

I am book marking this for future ref. Keep them coming.

Wow–I’ve been out of the HP fanfic loop for a while now. When I was really into the fandom, everyone was reading Cassandra Claire. You know, she still hasn’t finished those stories! I’d recommend her first two stories; Draco Dormiens and Draco Sinister. The third, Draco Veritas, has been frustratingly disjointed and in slow progress for about three years. I think the fans are just so overwhelming that it’s a case of the author having to continually outdo herself. The result is lots of dropped plot threads and a plot that seems to get thinner and thinner behind drawn-out description and overwrought “character development.” Ah, well. Read the first two.

Mr. Frail used to write HP fic, and since he’s now trying to be published as a novelist, we have a lot of laughs about the old fanfic he wrote. If his writing ever sells well, we can see people Googling him and finding Harry Potter fan fiction…talk about humble beginnings… The two best are here and here. The first is short and sad and very good, and the second is about Charlie Weasley and dragons in Romania.

Here ya go. Four out of a whole lot of MST3Ks, and two play parodies starring Chicken Boo from Animaniacs. Also some vacation photos I posted for a friend of mine to look at, you can ignore them. I figure you’re not into the Digimon thing, so I spared you a whole lot of porny ones that went through the Mike-Tom-Crow routine. Hope you like them.

Oh! I’ve run across some good Inu-Yasha stories—by “Thunk” (Especially “Beso”), and Queen’s “Good Karma.”

May one post their own stuff? I’ve got some Firefly fanfic over at www.fanfiction.net/~runawayscrape. Feedback is always welcome.

All the fics on this page appear to be #1s, but I would think there would be more.

Well, thanks for creating a great resource.

Also, re: Batman fiction, the only good Batman stuff I have seen has been one or two stories in Fanzing. To me, it appears that for the most part, only original characters stories of Superheroes are interesting.*
Some examples include: Lightningman and Majorette. Note: Majorette includes example of people’s identities and bodies changing. It also includes “teh ghey”.
*This is to say, on the internet. In print, stories of Batman and Spiderman, when novelized can be quite interesting.

Thanks for all the links!

phouka , everyone is most certainly encouraged to link to their own material. I’ve only got one samll, unfinished, not particularly good story at fanfiction.net, which is why I didn’t. But I’d love to see works from other Dopers!

I guess this is really a hijack, but…

Anybody else have any qualms about fan fiction?? I had my doubts even before I read Robin Hobb’s rant:

I kinda hate to see good talent going to waste with derivative stuff too.

Maybe it’s wrong of me, but I’m pretty much just going to write off fanfic as a whole.

Why? Two words: Blackadder slash.

Better not tell Tennyson, or Joyce, or Allende, or Sondheim, or Shakespeare… and those are just the five that sprang to mind as I typed the sentence out.

Have your qualms with fanfiction if you will, but the argument that derivative works are somehow “less” than original works (and what are original works, anyway? Does Ms. Hobb not appreciate how much she’s playing in the sandbox of contemporary fantasy tropes?) holds no water.
