Recommend me some good fanficiton

I’ve recently been looking around for some good fan fiction sites on the Web. I’ve never been exposed to much fan fic, but it sounds like fun – amateur writers coming up with stories about favorite movies, tv shows and books. My problem is that approximately 98% of what I’ve read so far is utter crap. Most of it reads like it was written by angsty teenage girls who’ve never heard of spell check and all want to marry Legolas. I’ve come across just enough good stuff to convince me that there are some talented writers floating around on the Net, but I can’t seem to find a site that has more than one or two together.

Can someone recommend a site (or two or three) that actually has good fan fiction? Someplace where the people running the site actually read what’s submitted and filter out the stories that are badly written, unfinished, or blatantly stupid? I’m not especially picky about the genre – I like mystery, fantasy, science fiction, romance, whatever, but I would like to see some halfway decent plots and character development.

Well, Nightingale, what fandoms do you like to read? I can rec you X-Men movieverse, Buffy (although that depends on what pairings you like to read), some Harry Potter (most of it Harry/Draco slash), and maybe a few other obsure things.

If you like Buffy, and you like Spike then www.allaboutspike.com is a great place to start. It has several Spike pairings—both het and slash. It archives fic that “explores Spike’s ambiguities.”

Henneth Annûn Story Archive

Also, all the fic is carefuly screened and chosen by the lovely webmaster. She only chooses quality work.

Well, if Godzilla even remotely tickles your fancy, you can read my two on-line Godzilla novels HERE

For good Star Wars fanfiction:

www.fanfix.com
www.wraithsandrogues.net (warning-some NC17 stories, but not all, so I feel safe in linking to it-I have two stories there, one unfinished).
www.wookieehut.com (again, NC17, but there’s a lot of non adult stories, along with fan art and recipes!)

Hope you like anime themed fanfiction:

Children of an Elder God is one fanfic that I must absolutely reccomend - especially if you like Evangelion or HP Lovecraft. Its a Neon Genesis Evangelion elseworld, and you gotta love giant robots vs Great Old Ones. Of course, its more than just a simple crossover. The plot is very well developed, and the character portrayal and development rivals/exceeds that of the original series it is based off of. This is probably my favorite piece of fanfiction that I have ever read.

http://www.thekeep.org/~rpm/fanfic/fics.htm all of these anime themed fanfictions are pretty good as well.
Stefan Gagne's Fiction Factory – 25+ years of novels, games, and other creative fiascos. Steven Gagne writes some excellant fanfiction, and his original works are pretty good.

http://www.tass.org/~rhea/old/fiction.html John Biles also writes some good stuff.

Outpost Daria has some very good Daria fanfiction, just check the “Recommended Authors” section. I particularly enjoy the works of Yui Daoren, Erin Mills and Roger E. Moore, but there are plenty of other great authors there, too. More Daria fanfiction can be found at Sick Sad World and Glitter Berries, which are both updated more often than Outpost-Daria.

If for some reason you’re into Chip’n’Dale’s Rescue Rangers fanfic (Oh, c’mon…we ALL felt that way about Gadget Hackwrench when we were 8.), I can personally recommend Rhyme and Reason by Mike Demcio, and anything written by John Nowak, especially his story ICARUS. “Icarus,” it should be noted, is an unabashed technothriller, kind of like “The Right Stuff” if it had been written by Crichton or Clancy. I like it.

For that matter, there’s even a fanmade Rescue Rangers “graphic novel,” Of Mice and Mayhem, available only online.

If you like Frasier fanfiction (It happens, really.), this Fan Fiction Archive might be usefull. I can personally reccomend the work of Regina and Ariadne.

For X-Men Evolution, Realm of the Internutter is always fun, especially if you like Kurt. Granted, it tends to be a little light on “gritty” Comic-style elements, and more centered on romance and “shipper” stuff. But that can be an advantage, at times.

On occasion, I’ve even managed to find some decent Cybersix fanfic. Tonight, von Richter Sleeps in Hell is fun…if you don’t take it too seriously. And if you really liked the “duel” scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark. On the other extreme, Friends Forever completely eschews any combat, rewriting the end of the series in the process, and turns out quite heartwarming.

Keep in mind, though, that many of these stories contain strong language, sexual situations, and/or the occasional zombie chainsawing.

Plus, y’know, My own fanfic, which I’d like to think isn’t too bad. It, too, also occasionally includes strong language, sexual innuendo, and zombie-fu.

Well, maybe not the sexual innuendo.

If you like beautiful women kicking ass and having sex, I recommend Xena.

There’s a subgenre to Xena fan-fiction that’s called über. Basically, it’s about reincarnations of the main characters in other times, worlds and places. Learn more.

Although there are quite a few Mary Sue authors on fanfiction.net there are still some authors who I would definitely recommend. What I find most important in fanfics is whether or not the author remains true to the characters.

For Evangelion related fics, you can’t go wrong with Random1377, who explores many different pairings and pulls them off extremely successfully while keeping the characterisation accurate.

For Harry Potter, there is a fic called Hinge of Fate, which is simply a must read. It describes the last year of Hogwarts and focuses in a relationship between Hermione and Snape (I know, I know. A weird combination. But believe me, the author manages to pull it off and developes the characters in a style worthy of J.K. Rowling.)

I Am Lord Voldemort describes the early years of Tom Riddle, allowing us to empathise with his character and understand exactly how he turned out the way he did. This fic is interesting, as we see things from a Slytherin’s point of view and the Gryffindors are put in a negative light. It’s a extremely good read.

Those are my main recommendations, though I have read some excellent Tamora Pierce fics - just give us a holler if you’re interested

Read anything by Alara Rogers, especially if you like X-Men, Star Trek, or Farscape. She’s excellent. My favorite is “Body and Soul”, a Magneto fic, but I won’t post a link because it contains lots of sexual violence and violence in general. It’s hardcore but still one of the best things I’ve ever read.

For Gargoyles, you can’t beat Christine Morgan. Awesome writer, but once again watch out for violence and sexuality.

There’s tons of quality fiction at X-Men Movieverse, an archive for the X-Men characters as interpreted by the films. Just dive into the archive and I’m sure you’ll find a good story or ten.

Everything Poi Lass writes is pure magic. My personal recommendations: “Love with the Light On” and “FIRST, DO NO HARM”. She’s one of the rare writers who can swing from tragedy and drama to utter comedy without missing a beat. Don’t miss “You did WHAT in a Cave?!?” and “The Adventures of GOD” (in which God joins the X-Men. Yes, that God.)

.:Nichol:.

For Harry Potter, there is a fic called Hinge of Fate

I just have to jump in and thank you for recommending this. I’ll probably be up all night reading this thing. (has a severe weakeness for SS/HG)

Let me know if you watch any Japanese anime and I may have some recommendations. But I don’t want to just list them here without more specifics.

Oops, I signed off too early. If any Trigun fans want to read an interesting one on Legato/Dominique (it’s short) you can look up the author TeaRoses on fanfiction.net. (I kind of liked my Hellsing fic “Law of Desire” too but the other two forget it)

And for Harry Potter I recommend this one:
http://www.fanfiction.net/read.php?storyid=1106353

I didn’t write it!

It’s Harry/Draco slash, but I don’t even like slash very much and I absolutely loved it, I’d recommend to anyone. It only got 6 reviews and I have no idea why.

For Harry Potter FictionAlley is good, there’s an active message board attached where you can find a lot of specific reccommendations:
http://www.fictionalley.org/

Fonts of Wisdom mostly does X-Men, with some Buffy stuff nowadays:
http://home.att.net/~lubakmetyk/

Here’s a Farscape site, with a nice rating scheme. Hasn’t been updated for a year, but still works AFAIK:
http://fffa.soliii.net/cgi-bin/archive.pl

And here’s a site based around one author, but it’s really pretty fun. (mostly) Catwomen centrist Batman stuff:
http://cattails.homestead.com/

Fanfiction net has a search program now, which can help, and though there’s an awful lot of bad stuff there there’s some good stuff it’s hard to find elsewhere. Try linking onwards through author recommendations from people you like.

Wolverine and Rogue Fanfiction

If you like The West Wing and/or Sports Night, http://www.grapefruithead.com/ourboys has great fic.

OK, let’s run through the “Fanfic” section of my favorites folder.

For The Labyrinth: Labyrinth Fan-Fiction. Good place to find a lot of good fanfic, seperated into different categories, and you can search by ‘Most Popular’ stories.

For Highlander: Seventh Dimension. A lot of fic, most of it good, for both the origanal series and The Raven. Also has a webring for links to other Highlander sites.

For Buffy: Unconventional Relationshippers’ List Archive. Lot of good fanfic for pairings that haven’t happened on the show, or weren’t happening during the time the fic is set in. For example, Xander/Buffy, Willow/Giles, Wesley/Faith. A LOT of good fic here, and a ton of pairings. A lot of it’s rated NC-17, but the raiting is marked on all stories in the archive.

For Narnia, Turkish Delights is a good archive, low on preachyness and high on actual stories. It does contain a lot of NC-17 rated fic, but they’re labeled as such.

If anyone else here reads (or used to read) L.J. Smith, Twilight Tales is the biggest 'fic archive out there. It’s been going strong for more than 5 years, now.

Cataclysm, I’d be interested in links to some of those Tamora Pierce stories, if you don’t mind.

We have a site called inkubator that exists to use fan fiction as a sneaky come-on to teach writing. It’s… um… gotten away from us some, though, and it now has a community of readers as well. We have an original “Star Trek” series as well as two ubers based on “Xena: Warrior Princess”, “Voyager”, and “The X-Files”. Now, this is all f/f stuff, so it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but here you are:

http://www.rlinfo.net/inkubator

See, I knew you guys could help.

Thanks for all the links, and keep them coming – the ones I’ve had time to check out are great! I’m not locked in to one particular fandom, so please just post to whatever ya’ll think is good. Cataclysm, I’d love to have those Tamora Pierce links; she is one of my all time favorite authors.
