I should mention there’s a high sexual content and it’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer. There’s a slew of good Buffy writers at Livejournal, most of whom really should be writing regular fiction: Harmonyfb, Herself, MustangSally, and so on. When I started reading fanfiction I was astonished that I could read this stuff for free. In particular, Mustang Sally is just wondeful—sort of like a cross between Janet Evanovich and Carl Hiasen.
Ah, another Tamora Pierce fan! I love her work (esp the Alanna series). Some of my favourite authors include:
Lady Berenice on fanfiction.net produces some great work. Her TP fics focus on Kalasin and use a mix of original and Tortal characters. She brings in quite a few other characters and it can get a bit confusing but they’re definitely worth it!
For some fics that centre in the Tortallan world and have a few appearances by the characters we know, try Krizsta. Her original characters are extremely well rounded and storylines are unique and original.
HuntressDiana is more of a ‘what if’ author and focuses mainly on Alanna and what would have happened if she hadn’t become a knight.
I know I’ve read some other good TP fics, and when I can remember them, I’ll post them straight away. I hope this helps Nightingale!
Ooo…somone got to Henneth-Annun and Fonts of Wisdom before I could. Well, here are some of my other favorites anyway.
For Harry Potter, I recommend Sugar Quill – http://www.sugarquill.net/ --for great work in general and “After the End” in particular. As plug for my best-beloved 'ship in that genre, I suggest The Howl Kingdom – http://www.voldeobum.net/thehowlkingdom/ . I should warn you that the latter is exclusively about 'fics exploring the possibility of a Sirius Black/Remus Lupin relationship.
Well hell. Since everyone else is doing it, I’ll pimp my own fic.
Found a Spirited Away fansite earlier today that’s a real treasure – Tea With A White Dragon. Has the only good SA fanfic I’ve found.
There’s Remember Us, a multifandom site for characters of color from movies, TV, comics, you name it. If you love Kendra, Adebisi, Storm or Hoshi, check it out. Slash and adult fic abounds.
I reccommend THE BUFFYBOT ADVENTURES. http://www.geocities.com/the-visitor/Buffybot/Buffybot for the continuing adventures of Sunnydale’s robotic heroine. Coming soon will be the season one finale. You only think you know the story.
Ranchoth, you forgot Canadibrit! Her stuff is the only fanfic I read anymore. (It’s Daria, but it pretty much goes off into it’s own little series after a while.)
Sorry, Quantum Butterfly, but Mercedes Lackey has forbidden fanfic based on her fictional works. There is a list of authors at ff.net who have specifically requested that fanfiction about their characters and/or concepts should not be written:
Anne Rice
Anne McCaffrey
Raymond Feist
Robin McKinley
Laurell K. Hamilton
Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb
Irene Radford
P.N. Elrod
Another of my favorite authors, George R.R. Martin, has also requested that no ASOIAF fanfic should be written. Anne Rice loves fanart but hates fanfic; McCaffrey used to allow Pern fic under very strict rules (none of her characters could be used, no special dragons, etc.) but I think she’s stopped allowing even that. On the other hand, there are many authors/creators/owners who are not opposed to fanfic and a few even support it. I know J.K. Rowling seems friendly enough about Harry Potter fic, and J. Michael Straczynski doesn’t mind Babylon 5 stories. I know some ficcers who used to email one of the writers of their favorite show, and he would discuss characterization and plot points with them regarding their fic.
There IS some Mercedes Lackey fan fiction on fanfiction.net, regardless, though. It shouldn’t be there, but people still write it, I guess.
Actually, she doesn’t quite forbid it-one can write fan fiction for fanzines by filing a release form.
To read it, you need to subscribe to one of the fanzines.
Joss Whedon told us specifically that we should write fanfic, especially porn. He said he loves fanfic and he’s happy that his characters will live on through fanfic and the Internet. sniff
I love that guy. He’s the greatest. (Until he does something to pissme off again)
Well, I just hope he’s got himself covered, because that’s what happened with Lackey and Marion Zimmer Bradley-people sued them claiming that they stole ideas from fan fictions.
Which sucks.
Star Wars erotica is the best!
BTW, plg, did you find that Angel/Spike story I said was on adultfanfiction?
The best I’ve read are the Starkweather stories over here http://www.geocities.com/phantmoftheopera/index.html both girls are really really good writers. Their fics are better than any of the X-Files novels… Even if X-files isn’t your bag, check them out. You might like them anyway.
I could go on and on for hours about X-Files fic but I’ll keep this short.
elfkin477, I can’t believe you didn’t mention Gossamer! I know there’s a lot of crap archived there but it’s still the oldest and biggest XF fic archive.
Here’s the best XF fic I’ve ever read: The Other Man
It’s slash, mind you, nothing explicit since it’s on ffn, but if that icks you… It’s Good Omens slash! Aziraphale/Crowley. Though if you just read the first half it’s not. Goes a bit overboard in the second. But it’s very funny, written in the same style as the book.
There’s a lot of funny slash out there, but most of it’s pretty explicit. I don’t want to recommend anything inappropriate.
Back when Captain Comics had his own website, there was a continuing story involving a Batman/X-Files crossover. If anyone has info on this, I would greatly appreciate it
