Inappropriate fan-fic material?

I was just surfin the web and came across a fan fiction site about Sonic the Hedgehog, a character in videogames, comics, and cartoons.

Aww, isnt that cute? Fan fics for little kids.

One of the fics dealt with abortion .

WHAT?

(sorry, can’t provide a hyperlink…GOOGLE Triss Sonic Hedgehog Abortion and click on CASHE)

Even though the procedure was written as benign and sugar-coated, I was utterly floored that the author put his material in a story about children’s level characters.

Regardless where you stand on the abortion arguement, do you think this was inappropriate story material?

Boy, this deserves a place right next to the “slash” genre of fan fiction.

I can just see it next: “Tales of a Fourth Grade Abortionist”

I’m not easily oogified, but that’s… oogy.

Eh.

Geez…

Y’know, I normally believe there’s no theme off-limits in fanfic, just that when your source material is family fare, iffy subject matter should be clearly tagged. I do have major reservations about rewriting essential core concepts of the original work to suit your agenda. My reaction to introducing contrived situations to make your agenda look like what is Right and Good in that fictional universe, which happens here, depends on how well you do it and how well it fits.

Looking at the fic, it’s quite elaborate and long, the abortion as a plot point seems is introduced quite “cold”. And it IS very, VERY sugarcoated; plus there is apparently only the tiniest quickly-dismissed hint that it could ever upset or be disagreeable to anyone – Of course, the scenario is contrived so the unborn is a world-destroying demon so there’s no question it must be eradicated.

Dunno if this level of fanfic is the most appropriate context to bring up the subject matter. Plus if you’re going to do it, it should get a lot more “hand holding” attention. Besides, in this sort of fantasy, the consistent thing may have been to just use a spell, potion or magic ray that would zap out the intruding creature – this suggests the author felt it absolutely imperative to bring in the word “abortion” and describe it as a harmless beneficial procedure.

Hey… hey hey hey hey hey hey. Back off there, Snoop. Sometimes the only thing that gets me through the lonely nights are the NC-17 Angel/us -n- Spike or Giles stories. Thou shalt NOT dis the slash. :wally

Didn’t read the OP story, but perhaps the author didn’t intend for their fic to be read by underagers? On fanfic.net, there’s entire genres of NC fic with children’s characters… most notably the Pokemon characters. Not defending the subject matter, but the age-old hack writer’s creed includes “if there’s an audience…”

::shrug:: Oogy for certain, but I can’t say the author shouldn’t have done it.

That I could live with, especially since I have designated Angel as my official crossover guy. I guess I was thinking more along the lines of Worf/Wesley (“How about you come up to my cabin, boy?”) or Kirk/Spock, which I don’t know if I’d want to read!

Well, thank you, Snooooopy. That quote is going to be haunting my nightmares till the end of my days.

BTW, that’s not even the most graphic fanfic I’ve seen for a “children’s” series, INCLUDING Sonic the Hedgehog. I once saw a Sonic fanfic that featured an execution by hanging. Oddly enough, that particular one was fairly well written.
Ranchoth
(Although, realistically, I don’t think royal executioners are allowed to call the prisoner a “total bitch” when reading back the sentence)

Oh. Well. Okay, then. Yeah, I can see where your examples would be completely different. [sub]and kinda icky[/sub] Though… Picard and Q… mmmmmmmmm…

Other possible creepy fanfic storylines:

Mario’s Overdose

Bugs Bunny: Pimp Daddy

The Pink Panther gets AIDS

Mickey rapes and kills Minnie

Lil’ Bo Peep goes down on the Sheep

Pepe le Pew gets a restraining order for stalking Penelope the cat

Popeye in the 'Nam

Star Trek vs Star Wars: A Gentleman’s Wager between Emperor Palpatine and Q pits Jar-Jar Binks and Wesley Crusher in a brutal fight to the death in order to save ONE galaxy from Cosmic Erasure.
(Actually, to get rid of at least one annoying character.)

I once found (completely by accident, I assure you… I was looking for Harry Potter pictures!) a fanfic site devoted to Harry Potter that included a number of “slash” stories involving Harry and Draco Malfoy.

I give fanfic a lot of leeway, but I’m fairly sure J.K. Rowling never intended that sort of interpretation for her characters…

The Sonic abortion thing sounds a bit off, too.

The worst HP slash I saw put Draco and his father together. Ewww!

I can see it now… Jesus Christ - Super Mario slash fanfic.

Yummy.

Hey, that’s nothing. Remember the Rowdyruff Boys? No? Well, that’s hardly a surprise, seeing as that they three villains who appeared in one episode of The Powerpuff Girls. Furthermore, they were undoubtedly the most one-dimensional PPG bad guys ever, who did practically nothing but fight…which, of course, was the point.

There are now hundreds of Rowdyruff Boys fanfics on the Web. Hundreds. Even Mojo Jojo, the MOST PROLIFIC villain on the show, doesn’t feature in as many stories. And quite a few of them, shall we say, protray the boys in a completely opposite light as what that one episode (I can’t stress this enough) indicated. Can you say “5-year-old romance”?

Please don’t get me started on all the Ranma 1/2 fanfics…

There’s just no telling what makes some writers click. Some of us (yes, I do them too) go for really weird stuff. Some make it a point to put certain characters in stories completely unlike what they’d face in canon.

The creative process is different for everybody. That’s just how it is.

Oh, and ratings are a waste of time; it’s much better to specifically note any potentially objectionable material. I feel the same about video games as well.

I read an interesting article about fan fiction just the other day:

Didn’t it happen to Mary Queen of Scots?

As long as it involves handholding i’m ok,but if these stories contain the phrases cherry popping or gang bang count me creeped out :open_mouth:

I guess this deserves a mention… go visit Godawful Fan Fiction to see reviews of some of the worst fanfics out there. It’s tripe like this that makes me totally and completely uninterested in ANY fanfic.

As a fanfic writer myself, I’m sorry to hear that. Yes, there is a lot of garbage out there, but there’s wonderful material, too; it’s too bad that the existance of bad stories makes people hesitent to look for the good stuff.
