Happy Orthodox Jewish Man...

Err.. Why?
It just seems like a slightly strange smiley to have next to Confused, Stick Out Tongue and the rest. And where are Annoyed Calvinist Woman, Cheerful Reformed Jewish Girl and Concerned Amish Boy?

I think it is one of those traditional things, just like the "wally". Some (perhaps many) would say I over use the smilies, but I've never found a good use for the smilie in question. ;j Well, almost never.

Speaking strictly as a poster here, I hate that smiley. It might be out-the-box traditional but there are damned few appropriate uses for it.

So with all due respect to Jewish people and their religion, chuck it out. Hasn't everyone been talking about a 'barf' smiley?

I always use it to signify:

"I hope a giant spider jumps on your head and sucks out your brains, leaving you a happy lobotomized idiot."

;j

I also use it when I need to inform somebody they have crabs but not to worry about it.

It's also useful for those times you need to tell somebody that their beret isn't quite covering their ear hair.

Or

"nice toupee"

Or

"I think it's time you took the earphones out, looks like you're getting a brain tumor"

All in all I'd have to say it's the most useful and versatile of the emoticons.

This is actually a really good question. Everyone's always saying "Why don't we have a 'pukey' smiley?" So, why don't we? I mean, I doubt I'd use it often (if ever; I try to limit my use of all smileys), but if so many people want one, why can't they have one? Sure, you can't make every smiley that gets wished for, but I don't go a day without seeing someone talk about wanting a "pukey" smiley.

The blowjob smily has relatively few uses, too.

If we voted, tho, I would retire the :wally . Banned in every forum but the Pit (except for possible joking). Named for a contraversy. Totally screws up line spacing.

Because people would use it. I deal with enough vomit from my four-year old, without having to see the electronic kind when I'm on the SDMB for some amusement. The kind of idiots who over-use the "smack head" smiley would have a field day with that one.

It occurs that you can sing "Happy Orthodox Jewish Man" to the tune of "Lovely Rita Meter Maid". The other lyrics wouldn't make as much sense probably.

The smiley originally came about because a Doper requested it and producing it was somewhat of a creative challenge to the membership.

I've always thought it was unique, unusual, cute, even.

If you don't like it, don't use it.

You can also change your settings so that you don't see smilies at all.

Really? I always thought it looked like a person yawning from boredom (note the eyes).

Come to think of it, it did often seem to be used in rather counterintuitive places.

(And since I note that the quote-in-a-quote didn't come through, this is the smiley we're talking about: )

Well, when I do that, it misspells "embarrassment".

As for the HOJM smiley, it doesn't have many uses, true, but it's still funny. Whose idea was it?

I love the Happy Orthodox Jewish Man! And besides, in GQ, questions about Judaism aren't all that rare. It's an excellent way to cap a post explaining kosher law or circumcision.

No, actually, it looks like the Jewish man is lifting weights.

I think we need an eye-batting smiley. It's an important part of my IM banter, certainly.

It was that if you highlighted one of the smilies, it'd look Asian. I can't make any of them do it now, though. Seems like the angry smiley is the best candidate. Maybe it depends on how many colors your monitor displays.

travelling down memory lane

The origin of the new smiley was fraught with intrigue, hurt feelings, disagreement, trolling etc. A classic Dope story, but probably not as exciting as you might think from my description.

It was created by former poster sdimbert on or about 25 May 2000.
You can read the whole story here, in About This Message Board:
Jdavis: New smiley? It flashed by, but when I clicked on it said Illegal thread?
(to avoid confusion, I'll mention that in the linked ATMB thread, the OP is an imposter - in an old version of the bulletin board software you could create a name that resembled closely an existing username. Thank God that hole was plugged by the developers.)

That ATMB thread links to this GQ thread:
For cmkeller . . . a question about Judaism's rituals
where we see sdimbert in the act of creation, so to speak.

The lesson I learned from our happy orthodox jewish smiley adventure: if you add a feature at the message board off the cuff, without a full-blown committee meeting discussing all possible pros and cons, you open yourself up for years of confusion.

Yes, the HOJM turns Chinese when highlighted; the embarrassed smiley looks like psychotic screaming man when highlighted. Highlight the Smackie and he becomes Elephant Man, or something.

And how does this differ from adding a feature after convening a full-blown committee meeting discussing all possible pros and cons?

The difference would be that when an idea is reviewed at a full-blown department meeting, it typically dies in the commitee and nothing gets done.
