Please? Nearly every day tehre is a need for it. Hell, we don’t even need to add one, we can replace this ;j really bizzarre one. Just use a modified Mr. Yuck or something if you don’t want to show actual vomit–it’ll get the point across.
As far as I can tell, the most significant obstacle to adoption of a pukey in the past is that nobody’s come up with a really elegant design that everybody likes. It’s apparently quite difficult to capture the vomiting action in a small image constrained by (a) small size and (b) no animation. Previously, whenever we’ve had a new-smiley vote, a couple of pukers have made it into the late rounds, but divided opinion between them permits a dark horse, like :dubious: or :smack:, to pull ahead.
I have a notion for a design that will overcome the given obstacles, but as no new-smiley vote appears in the near offing, I haven’t yet tried to execute it.
Mr Yuck is ancient and pure genius. Is he even copyrighted anymore?
Even better than being a full on “emiticon” he suggests painful retching. Actual vomiting ontains some kind of release, not so a retch. And it’s a simple, non-animated design.
As many people know, I did just this several years ago. I’ve heard one negative comment, but otherwise almost universally positive. I offered it copyright-free to the SDMB to use. They have not taken me up on this offer.
It’s “smiley”, and what on earth do you need a vomiting one for? What does it communicate that “Ugh!” doesn’t? The other smilies either (a) say something that can’t be put into words and still have the same meaning or (b) reference Board history. A vomiting smiley just makes the board ugly and takes more time to put into your post than the ‘word’ “Ugh!” or “Nasty!”. No thanks.
You mean the happy Orthodox Jewish man smiley; kosher refers specifically to Jewish dietary laws. IIUC it refers to a part of Board history; it’s been explained before, but it was before my time and I don’t remember it. Anyway, I use it all the time.
I feel like the reason we don’t have more smilies to express every possible emotion under the sun is that the board would then be ugly and disorderly-looking like every teen message board on the Internet. I really like the clean, organized look of an SDMB page, and I’d rather not have it punctuated by smiley images on every second line. We have a powerful language in common; use it.
Mr. Yuck is alright but is still an ugly, nasty looking thing like any other vomiting smiley would be. Why not just say “Yuck”? I don’t want to see painful retching all over any page.
YMMV, I guess, but I find all manner of pukey smiley (incluidng Mr. Yuck and jjimm’s) distasteful and out-of-place here. I have yet to see one that I like personally. I can’t say I’d quit the boards if a puking smiley were adopted, but I can’t picture myself voting for one any time in the future. Vomiting and retching are disgusting and I don’t want to see it plastered all over my favorite place on the Web.
While I don’t particularly have a problem with the Happy Smiling Jewish Man, I do wonder why we don’t have any other religious-type symbols around here. Don’t get me wrong! I don’t want more added, I’d rather have Jewish Man taken out than add more.
I want to have less smileys…we can get rid of the :wally . Kill that blasted  , it’s so rude. And Happy Jewish Man, sorry buddy. Gotta go.
:wally: is a reference to a Doper of past days called Wally, and the Happy Orthodox Jewish Man is also a reference to board history (hopefully a 99er or something can come in and give the specifics) rather than a religious symbol. I’d wager it’s more likely to offend Orthodox Jews than represent them–the Star of David is the Jewish religious symbol.
The smilies add a lot to the message without crowding the boards. They’re a way of making a statement quickly without having to add a disclaimer. Think what a does when you’re not sure if the poster is teasing or not. An  lets someone know *just * what you think of them. They’re not distracting (unless it’s purposeful) and they don’t make me think of ‘every teen message board.’
I adore all of our smilies (except ;j - I just don’t get it) . I don’t think we should get rid of any, but I do think we should add a puking smiley. The one done by **jjimm ** is perfect!
mrrrealtime, I love those. I did my one to try to keep it in line with the other SDMB ones, but your series is way more quirky. I’d love it if you’d replicate the entire SDMB series (minus “putz” and the Hacidic guy).
That’s actually a really bad “sticking-out-my-tongue” one. I did one that looked more like what it was intended, but can’t find it at the moment. Will post a link when I do.
I agree with you 100%. I’ve argued in this thread that our current smilies are perfect for, as you say, quick but meaningful statements that add a lot to a message without clogging up the boards unnecessarily. My argument is that lots of new, vulgar smilies would make our board look like every teen MB–not that it looks like one now–far from it! I love what our current array of smilies does for this board’s communication. I am so far not convinced that any of the other smilies I’ve heard proposed will have any such communicative power; while all of our current smilies make statements that can’t quite be made the same way in words, I don’t see that in a pukey smiley, and most of the other smilies, avatars, etc. that have to my knowledge been proposed are similar fluff–nasty, vulgar fluff at times.
I do agree that we ought to change the blowjob smiley, though.
I use the former and it has a clear definition in my mind that I honestly can’t put into words. The latter is just a general exclamation of silliness (to me), and I can’t say I’ve ever used it.
