A little Jewish guy smiley we can have, but not a pukey face?

Without hyperbole, I can think of THOUSANDS of time that a pukey face can come in handy. When is the little jewish dude used? Can we lose that, and get a pukey face? Or maybe just some new smilies??? Please?? Smilies make life easy. Why TYPE how you feel, when a little face can say what you could never put into words? :dubious: See?? You could see I’m being sarcastic there!! This whole thing is a big laugh to me! Dont take it serious!! I’ll lose me rag!!  Oops… maybe my point isnt being made :smack:

See? But this ;j this, I can do without. Eh?

Yehyehyehyehyeh!

Meh. If you can’t articulate your disgust, how is having a little prefab icon going to help?

It’s not for help, it’s for emphasis! And not only WRT disgust.

I have to put in my contrary vote. I simply adore ;j

Oy! A pukey you want? ;j Listen, bubela, “spilling your guts” is only a figure of speech around here. You know, you don’t look so good. Are you getting enough to eat? Here, have a bagel. ;j Oy vey, you’d blow away in a stiff breeze. I worry about you, even if you never think of me. You could at least write, once in a while. ;j

Seriously, though, I don’t know if the board has an anti-bulimia policy, but you can imagine what might happen if we encouraged that sort of thing. Be careful, that stuff makes the floor slippery.

Bullplop. . The existing smileys help remove ambiguity (“despite my deadpan statement, I am in fact being ironical :D”) but what value does a pukey smiley bring?

“I’m disgusted! :pukey: :pukey :pukey:” What contribution does the pukey smiley make? It just replicates the sentiment of the text. I suppose some users will feel they can REALLY emphasize their disgust by putting in five or six hundred of them in their Pit OPs. The invitation to overuse is too great.

How ironic, the smileys sneaked in. Oh, well…

Yeh, they’re such persistent little colonizers.

I’ll note also that the best smilies act as softeners, which is convenient when facial expressions etc are lacking.

The pukey would at best be the equivalent of “Neener-neener”: at worst it would be an intensifier.

What we need is an improved winky: I would call it ::bemused::

Seriously, what is the point of the ‘happy orthodox Jewish man’ smiley, other than as a somewhat labored joke?

Enough, already!

It would be useful to have a “Banging your head against a brick wall” smiley, I think, as a way of indicating frustration, but not necessarily anger…

Then again, I wonder why we need the “Putz” smiley, since it’s use is apparently verboten in most circumstances, and it’s further of dubious heritage as a leftover from the infamous Wally incident well before my time here.

Maybe it’s time for a bit of a Smiley Shuffle?

Can anybody explain to me what the significance of this ;j is? When is it appropriate to use? Why would it be used at all? WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE?

The “HILCHOS HA’SMILEH” is a 700 page edict governing the use of the Orthodox Jewish smiley, including its use on the Sabbath (definitely not) and high holy days (not okay on Yom Kippur, but encouraged for every post on Purim, whether Judiasm is discussed or not), its appropriateness in threads mentioning non-Kosher foods, and a long discussion on whether Reconstructionist, Reform and Conservative Jews can use it or not.

The ;j is OK by me. But the :wally smiley has got to go, it’s more or less banned everywhere but the PIT, and this isn’t widely known, and could get some naif into mild hot water.

I do want an “ecchhh” emoticon.

Although I can see that other moving smileys are cute and occ useful, they slow down the Hampsters, which is bad.

The Happy Orthodox Jewish Man smiley has two purposes:

  1. Making fun of the pointlessness of the Happy Orthodox Jewish Man Smiley. ;j It stoooooopid!
  2. A secret plot on the level of Illuminatti maneuverings to distract the readers of the SDMB (see item #1) from the realisation that TubaDiva really is…Jack Bauer!

I just pray that Mr. O’Rielly and Mr. Gibson of Fox News log in one day to find that the war on Christianity includes our Happy Orthodox Jewish Guy. I would be so proud. ;j

Speaking personally, not as a moderator but as poster, I’ve always found the Hasidic smiley to be offensive. Why single out the Jews? How come we don’t have a black-face smiley, for use when someone wants to say, “Yes, ma’sser”? How come we don’t have an Asian smiley for use to say, “You’re being inscrutable”? How come we don’t have a smiley with a turban when we want to threaten someone?

We’d all be appalled at any of those stereotypical racist smileys. Howcome it’s OK to have a stereotypical racist Jewish smiley?

Crap. Now I have a rational argument against the smilie that involves my personal ethical system. :smack:

It’s God’s chosen smiley.
