We need a sheep smiley. Or a goat.
I don’t mind the Orthodox Jewish guy smiley - but we definitely could use a disgusted/barfing smiley, and a va-va-voom/transported by lust smiley. Could be pretty darned handy.
Lust? Here?
I like to imagine them prying up the toenail of the message board and diving into the soft meat underneath.
Blech! Can’t you keep your sick TMI fantasies to yourself?
@@@@@@@@@
Personally I find vomiting to be disgusting and would not like to see a puking emoticon on the board. There are too many emoticons anyway, why do we have to have one that depicts something gross? Do we need a shitting emoticon too? I know I’m outvoted, but I just thought I’d register my thoughts.
I just realized that the person who posted this only has 700 posts. Meaning that he has had occasion to use a pukey, on average, two or three times per post. Maybe the OP is just hanging in gross threads?
Yeah, I was just using a pukey smilie as an example, see. The point I was trying to make was that, whereas I like the way there are a limited amount of smilies, to keep clutter down, why was a jewish smilie planted in there, taking up a space that could be used by more useful smilies? can anyone tell me its origin? Oh, and I was using hyperbole. It was a joke. :wally Yeah, dont get rid of that one, anyway.
That’s not a jewish guy, that’s a giant spider sucking out your brains.
Look at it closely and tell me I’m wrong.
I pretty much agree with this. The existence of the Jewish smiley just seems really bizarrely backwards and offensive to me. For the reasons you mentioned.
The problem with the Pukey is that every post in a TMI or other squicky thread would contain one, and it’s not conveying anything as a modifier (which is the role I see the others mostly fulfilling) but only as decoration. Pukey would be running rampant around the boards in a matter of moments, but not really adding too much in the process.
Is that how you describe it? It’s “racist” only in the sense that it identifies a particular race (by such a definition, writing the word “Jewish” in any context constitutes a racist act) but it’s not offensive or derogatory and unless I’m unaware of a stereotype that Orthodox Jews always smile (they don’t, in my experience), it’s not even stereotypical.
You’re really over-thinking this, unless this is just an attempt at sarcasm. That’s it, isn’t it? Are you writing a parody of people who look for things to get offended at? I sure hope so.
I just want to make sure- is this a “whoosh” (which I am apparently unable to detect) or are you really offended?
Well, I can say that ***I *** find it fairly off-putting. I wouldn’t quite go so far as to say ‘offensive’ but certainly I don’t think there’s any need for it.
The one I **do **find offensive is the :wally icon. I don’t think it adds anything to a post that can’t be conveyed very clearly in words.
Smilies such as ,
and the like at least indicate something isn’t being said in a negative way, and the other ones (other than ;j ) serve some purpose…but all the ‘putz’ thing does is substitute for name-calling. It’s pointless and mean-spirited.
I think we’re all smart enough around here that we can type out our own vilifications without having to resort to :wally to clarify.
If we’re going to have an “Insult Smiley”, can we at least change the insult to something that people might actually use… something like “Smeghead”, perhaps?
Dopers, Deopers, Dopers …
When will we learn that change on the back end of the site happens at about the speed of the flow of hardened pitch? When it comes to things such as new smileys, new features, vBulletin upgrades, and new subforums, the SDMB is perhaps the most conservative site on the net.
I have a dream. . . that one day a poster will be judged by the content of his posts and not by the color of his smileys.
We’ve always tended to pay much more attention to that content than to “flying bologna.” What you have to say is much more important to us than any of the window dressing that might accompany it. Sure, some of the extras are fun and cute and etc. but they will never take precedence over actual content. If this means that we’re stodgy, well, okay.
Or a giant spider humping you from behind. Other’s MMV.
How long have you been here?
I suppose we are all allowed the odd impossibility.
