No more ipod mini?

Just went to the apple site, and it seems their huge new announcement is a product called the ipod nano. There is no longer a listing for the ipod mini. Has this model been discontinued? It had the questionable advantage of being available in colors, which means something to my daughter but nothing to me.

That is correct; the nano is replacing the mini in the iPod lineup. As for colors, it seems Apple is marketing a line of colored slipcases for the nano instead of making the device itself in multiple hues.

I think the Nano is coming in white and black; to get other colors you'll have to use the cases I guess. Also, it has less battery life, smaller capacity, but it's solid state which means it won't skip. And it's a lot smaller.

Boo.

I got my 6G iPod Mini for $250, which is what they're charging for the 4G Nano. However, it adds a color screen with photo viewing. However, it's only 1.5" x 1.5", smaller than a wallet-sized photo, even smaller than my phone display.

Too bad they dumped the Mini, that was a perfect mid-range product.

Well hopefully, as an orphan, the mini will soon be available at discounted prices. If anyone hears of anyplace that is selling them cheaper than list, feel free to let me know. And I agree that the mini was an excellent in between size. Not everyone likes smaller, smaller, smaller.

I just ordered my wife a mini the other day, and they contacted me to let me know abou the nano and whether I wanted to change my order to that instead. Pay more money for lesser capacity and it's not inscribed with a dedication? No thanks!

I actually think the Nano is very cool. I'll probably end up getting one.

I've held off so far because I want to be able to run with the thing, and from what I can tell, the hard-drive based iPods are miserable to run/jog with. The Shuffle was a little too spartan for me.

The Nano, with the screen and the larger capacity, is perfect for my needs. Now if I could only get NPR to release a podcast, I'd be in heaven.

Does the Mini have a micro drive? I always thought it had flash memory. It's pretty small.

I want a nano. I might just go through one of those bullshit "Spam your friends(or give fake adresses) for the latest consumer electronic item" dealies, one it comes up.

By the way, here is a review of it. It sounds awesome.

Wow. The black one is pretty slick, but I already have a 4gb mini. The way they keep rolling this stuff out drives me nuts. 2 weeks after I got my 4gb they came out with the 6gb. What's it been - a few months since they came out with the 6, now they have the nano? It seems to be pretty much what I wished for - a shuffle with a display.

Yeah, but the Shuffle has a built-in USB port making it a perfect USB drive. I'm really indecisive, 'cos I like the larger size, and I could use a display for when I lose my place in audio books.

Colorware is already making plans to colorize iPod nanos in the color of your (daughter's) choice.

That's exactly why I like the nano, plus it uses flash memory so it should be slightly more robust.

No wonder they gave us a free ipod when we bought an ibook for my daughter. Actually we had to pay for it with a full rebate offered, but still...
