Nintendo reveals new controller/technology behind new "Revolution" system

Crazy.

I think they’re really onto something, here. The big N made a big deal out of how this next system will not be a direct competitor to the PS3 and XBox360 because “we intend to provide an entirely different type of gaming experience.” Looks like they’re right - a gyroscopic, expandable “remote control” that senses its own place in space and can adapt to be used in different ways on a game-by-game basis. I love the examples given already - using it to “reel in a fish,” pointing it like a gun and shooting, slashing as a sword, using it as the stick for piloting an aircraft - and those are just the tech demos.

The entire reason that the Nintendo DS is so great is that it offers new gaming experiences (via the touch screen and microphone) that are simply unavailable through any other system. It looks like the Revolution is going to take this to a new level, truly redefining how we think of “video games” - no longer just “games you play by mashing buttons on a controller.”

Psst.

The idea sounds good enough, but its a drastic change from what gamers are used to. I think the look of it will scare off some people.

Looks cool, but I’m not sure it’s cool enough to pull me away from Sony/XboX. Cool controllers can’t offset the need for adult themed games and the overall size of the catalog.

Don’t think I wouldn’t buy this in a second if XboX stole it though…bwhahaha.

Nintendo is carving a niche for itself as a second console. And in a world where major video games have become such expensive things that risk taking and innovation are nearly impossible, I think that is a good place for it.

Again, I really don’t think that’s the point. Nintendo is evolving the concept of “video game” to the point where you won’t even think of “Revolution” and “Xbox” as being the same thing any more than you think of a DVD Player and a toaster being the same thing/interchangeable.
