I think they’re really onto something, here. The big N made a big deal out of how this next system will not be a direct competitor to the PS3 and XBox360 because “we intend to provide an entirely different type of gaming experience.” Looks like they’re right - a gyroscopic, expandable “remote control” that senses its own place in space and can adapt to be used in different ways on a game-by-game basis. I love the examples given already - using it to “reel in a fish,” pointing it like a gun and shooting, slashing as a sword, using it as the stick for piloting an aircraft - and those are just the tech demos.
The entire reason that the Nintendo DS is so great is that it offers new gaming experiences (via the touch screen and microphone) that are simply unavailable through any other system. It looks like the Revolution is going to take this to a new level, truly redefining how we think of “video games” - no longer just “games you play by mashing buttons on a controller.”
