It’s been a few years since the DS and the PSP came out and I’m wondering when the next ones will be arriving. I’m assuming Nintendo is working on the next “Gameboy”, so to speak. Is Sony even planning to do a PSP2?
Any news on these products? Perhaps a Microsoft one?
Nintendo’s already announced theirs. Details will be released this month at E3. I’m sure that’s when we’ll hear of any offerings from other companies, too.
I would consider it a new handheld, yes, since it uses new display technology that will (or should) result in completely new games that couldn’t be played on the DS. The DS Lite and DSi added cosmetic changes and periphery, but it was still pretty much the same console.
Nintendo’s not going to abandon the DS name until people tire of it. The DS is insanely popular, holding its own even among home theater consoles. Why get rid of a winning formula? On top of that, there’s only so many ways you can actually change a system to make it “completely” new, and innovation’s getting thin. I mean, depending on where you draw the line, Nintendo didn’t actually make a new console since the NES until the Gamecube came out, since the SNES and N64 still used cartridge games. The Wii could be thought of as a mere update to the Gamecube, since all they did was add online capability and motion control.
I sincerely hope the opposite. Those of us who can’t handle 3D shouldn’t be so completely left out. I mean, Nintendo’s the one going for a wider market. As soon as the headaches come in from continual use, there will be a lot of people who realize they can’t handle fake 3D very well. Just like last time.
If the technology is anything like the HoloToy app for the iPad, I don’t think it’s going to be a problem. I honestly can’t imagine anyone having trouble with that, whereas I can certainly understand potential problems with the 3D tech used in theaters currently.
It’s actually something of an interesting question. What’s considered a new console or a redesign? The DS Lite is pretty obviously a redesign, but is the DSi? I mean, it’s more or less just a DS plus a camera, but it also has more RAM and a faster CPU as well as multimedia software, which permits different types of games to be made that couldn’t run on the original DS. So you could argue it’s a completely new system. But Mahaloth appears to think it’s a redesign, and even appears to consider a handheld with 3D display technology that happens to be called a DS to just be a redesign as well. So what makes sense, and where is the line drawn between new and redesign?
Okay, so if you want to get technical, it’s an Xbox with motion controls and a worse online system. 6 of one, half dozen of another. The “criticism” stands.
