IAMA Meteroroligist, but it seems that one of the key ingredients that’s been msissing in “hurricane soup” before the recent years is that the water needs to be 82 degrees F for hurricanes to form.

I’ve always gone: alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, theta, omega… but that’s it. My alphabet-fu is off 
Zeta,eta, theta, iota, kappa,lambda, mu,nu,xi,omicron,pi.rho,sigma,tau,upsilon,phi,psi.chi,omega.
Lord knows what happens if we run out of Greek letters.
Slight hijack (wait, this is MPSIMS ;)), I researched the subject a bit ago, and the results of which are basically, we don’t know if global warming leads to increased number of hurricanes, but data shows it may be less hurricanes. Post is near the bottom of the 1st page.

Being in a hurricane zone, I’ve also read a few things on this. Conjecture to this point is that more hurricanes are NOT an outcome of global warming, but that more powerful hurricanes may be. This will probably end up being one of those things where they end up quibbling about it forever and we really never know what is true.
