…will be amused to hear that Hurricane Fred has formed off the coast of Africa.
Which, by the way, is a unusual storm in many ways. Although it’s formed in the Cape Verde cradle of many storms, it’s the first in 125 years to reach hurricane strength over the Cape Verde Islands. Storms usually have to travel a few hundred miles westward to build up that much strength. It’s also the first seen to form this far eastward in the tropics.
Right now, it’s forecast to blow out in a few more days… but remember that the biggest, nastiest, most destructive hurricanes tend to form up there in the Cape Verdes, and weather is less predictable than in former eras.
Anyone else think they should name storms only after women?
We are missing a great opportunity for cash by not selling the storm names to corporate sponsors. Lots of free press and after all no publicity is really bad publicity.
Perhaps if we were to name them for despicable villains throughout history people in their path would take the threat more seriously and get the hell out of Dodge. If Hurricane “Idi Amin” or Hurricane “Uday Hussain” were on the way instead of “Betty” maybe more would familiarize themselves with evacuation routes long before the first clouds appeared.
