58th and Lex

My first job out of college was as a department manager at the long defunct Alexander’s department store. The building stood empty for a long time. I now live near Providence and rarely visit NYC. What’s on the block now?

A whole bunch of things now:

The container store! That’s fantastic! I need some containers because I’m moving this weekend.

friedo, there are two Container Stores in Manhattan - one’s on 58th and Lex, the other is on 6th between 18th and 19th. Just thought I’d mention that in case the one further south is more convenient to you.

Yep, I just found that one on their website. It’s open until 9PM too!

A store just for containers. God bless Gotham.

My shrink. That’s what’s at 58th and Lex. She’s in the big ugly brown office tower with Holly Hunt and Poggen Pohl on the ground floor. That’s 150 East 58th, directly across 58th from Bloomberg Tower, aka 731 Lex, which has a passagaway to 59th several stories high cut into its lowest floors.

I had to go to the new Sam Flax at 55th and 3rd and, because of this thread, walked right through the middle of the new Bloomberg building. I remember the Alexander’s there too, and even some of their commercials: “Alexander’s treats me like my Dad owns the store, how lucky can you get!” Then I remember the long-abandoned building, then the pit, and now, ooooh big shiny tall building!

It’s worth a look. The Container Store is cool too.

Thanks for the replies. So they never tore down the building, I guess.

I still hear the “I browse at Bloomingdales, meander through Macy’s but I buy at Alexanders, I buy at Alexanders” song all the time in my head.
