Best Firefox 2.0 Extensions

Anyone have any really good ones?

I am currently running:

Adblock Not the Adblock Plus or whatever it is. This extension is half the reason to use Firefox

Adblock Filterset.G Updater Never have to tell it what ads to block because it already knows.

DictionarySearch Highlight a word and one of the right click options opens up a tab to an online dictionary definition, and you can even tell it which dictionary to use.

GooglePreview Each listing in a Google search has a preview of the web page next to it.

IE View Right click to open the existing link in IE, or open a link in IE. Can also be set to automatically use IE whenever going to certain pages. Helpful for those pages that do not work with Firefox.

US Department of Homeland Insecurity Idiocy Level A little icon on the bottom bar linked to the current threat level. Silly little add on.

I had a few others that I was not able to keep when switching to 2.0, like one that would audibly pronounce any word if you highlight it and use a right click option. That was helpful.

Oh, and I may as well mention themes:

Noia 2.0 (eXtreme) Amazingly popular for a reason. Currently my only concession in my boycott of all things marketed as “extreme”.

The mouse gestures is my favorite. It allows you to navigate by right clicking and making a motion instead of having to go and click on the “back” button. I’ve gotten so used to doing that, I sometimes catch myself trying to navigate Windows folders that way.

I like All-In-One Sidebar as it allows me to have the “slide out” bookmarks that I had with an older extension that didn’t work after Firefox 1.0. Just bring the mouse to the left side of the screen and your bookmarks (or any other sidebar you choose) slides out for you to use it. Very nice.

I also find Adblock Plus to be a great ad-on, and I also use it with the Filterset.G Updater.

Another good extension that goes well with Adblock is Flashblock - blocks all flash and replaces it with a “play” button - if you want it to play, just click and then it’ll go. Otherwise, no annoying flash on the webpage. If you want flash all the time on any particular website, you can add it to the config for the plugin.

I love the Forecastfox Enhanced for it’s great radar weathermaps - really nice.

You can get other filter sets in Adblock Plus to update automatically (in the Adblock Plus options, under the Filters menu, go to Add Filter Subscription…

The reason I mention that is that I recall reading somewhere that there are issues with Filterset.G. I took a quick look at the Mozilla knowledgebase and couldn’t find what I was thinking of, but maybe one of the other Firefox users can chime in. I also recall that if you want to use another filter subscription you have to explicitly uninstall Filterset.G.

Pimpzilla

Curse you! I only came in here to post that.

Flashblock - don’t let Flash get you down
Adblock plus
Linky - Um… Okay, it’s for the porn, but there are non-porn applications as well
Zoom - control the size of images. I.e. in a woodworking forum I frequent this is a godsend to control image sizes that other users post.

Tab Mix plus 0.3.5.2

The Web Developer extension.

Anyone who does any kind of web development work needs to get this extension. Right now. Go, go, go!

Another one that I like is QuickRestart. It simply lets you invoke the Restart function, which is normally only available after installing a new extension, at any time. I find it particularly useful when I’ve been browsing for a while and Firefox’s memory usage has skyrocketed to 200MB+ but I don’t want to lose my tab session.

If I may veer slightly off the topic of the thread, I suggest installing StrokeIt. Then navigating Windows folders that way will actually work.

If you do decide to get StrokeIt, you’ll probably want to configure it to ignore gestures in Mozilla applications (which includes Firefox) so that it doesn’t interfere with the existing plugin.

If you install StrokeIt, do you need a webcam?

Bob

Thanks for the suggestions. I have added several of them and am trying to figure out mouse gestures now.

I miss the Abe Vigoda status add on. I grew used to knowing that Abe was alive.

Oh, and adblock

Lets see…
StumbleUpon is fun for wasting time, and finding new things.
BugMeNot extension is very useful… saves some work.

I also use Gmail Notifier, User Agent Switcher is another web design tool (I see the web design tool bar was already mentioned), and FoxyTunes, which is convenient if you use one of the supported media players (most are).

I haven’t been able to get strokeit to work well with mouse gestures firefox.

In strokeit, I select “mozilla” and click the “turn off for this application” box, but it doesn’t seem to turn it off. I can’t remember my exact clicks, and I can’t bring it back because I uninstalled strokeit, but you get what I’m trying to say.

Mbossa, thanks for the info. I have been playing with Strokeit (and doesn’t THAT just leave itself wide open for commentary!) and I love it.

Thanks again.
