Weight loss supplements- any success whatsoever?

A friend today got an ad for something called “Ultra Liposlim” which I could find little info on the Net about. But we got discussing if any of this stuff has been
found to work at all.

On one hand, I have had limited success with white-bean-extract-based carb-blockers and fat blockers. I did have lots of success with one type of fat blocker that unfortunately made flatulence risky (TMI- not just gas would pass).

Two things which are touted for various health benefits, including weight loss, are green tea and apple cider vinegar, which comes either in their natural form or in pills purporting to contain their essential ingredients.

Cutting through all the hype & BS, what actually works to any extent at all?

In my experience, the only way to lose weight, is to exercise and eat healthy foods.
The supplements out there don’t do anything for you, I don’t believe…unless you eat right and exercise in the first place! Anything else is a waste of money.
YOU need to be your own carb-blocker and fat-blocker.
Simple as that.

While I don’t believe any supplement will substitute for actual dieting, I have found that Blackmore’s Metabolic…somethingorother… was an excellent multi-vitamin and does seem to kick-start things pretty well.

My *completely non-scientific theory *is that if you’re getting all the nutrients you need, your body is more willing to go burning calories since it doesn’t think you’re headed into a restricted diet/famine period.

ETA: Oh, and be careful with the apple cider vinegar. I tried it a couple of times and it gave me shocking stomach cramps and nausea within about 15 minutes of ingestion. I’m guessing it’s not a common allergy, but it’s still worth being alert to as a possible side-effect.

You know those zinc lozenges that people take for colds? They give you a nasty taste in your mouth for hours, and everything you eat will taste like that. I’d think that would help.

The only think that worked for me was ephedra/caffeine combos, which are now impossible to find. I’ve put on a TON of weight since I can’t get those anymore. They really did give me great energy and simply make me not hungry. Not hungry meant I’d eat less, and more energy meant I’d move more. Yes, of course it was the eating less and moving more that made me lose weight - duh. But the ephedra/caffeine combo made that possible.

Very little gets me as blisteringly mad as the clusterfuck that was the ephedra scare. Sure, it could be abused and cause serious health problems in idiots who took too much or didn’t believe the contraindications - just like water, mmm’kay? But obesity causes far more serious health problems in far more people, and ephedra was a clinically effective way to combat it.

I manage a drug store. I’ve never heard anything good about any of the products. The pharmacists think they’re a joke. I have customers come in every day and sing the praises of practicly every health product on the shelves. I’ve never had a customer tell me they tried any of the diet drugs and had good results.

I have been taking a prescription drug, metformin, for nearly 2 1/2 years and in that time I have lost 20 lb without actually dieting. I seem to be stuck there for the last half year.

This is a well-known side effect of metformin. I don’t understand why it has that effect since the action of metformin is to inhibit the release of glucose by the liver.

I had great success with a product called “Starch Blocker” back in the 70’s - I think it’s since been taken off the market. TMI here - I don’t have frequent bowel movements (only once every three days usually) and the stuff made me go every day, which I think contributed to the weight loss. I’ve tried all the fiber products on the market (except those nasty drink ones) and the best I can do is still every two days. Sigh.
