The Emperor of the world wants a Car Stereo

or Just how far do we need to go to answer a GQ?
This thread pissed me off when it went down a couple of weeks ago, but I let it drop. Now that the thread has been bumped, I decided to stop internalizing my pissed off-it-ness and let it loose. At the same time, I think that maybe it will answer just how far a poster needs to go to answer a GQ. I thought about putting this in ATMB, but after about 1.2 nano seconds I realized I would not be able to keep the language suitable for ATMB.
You guys remember the Emperor of the World? (EOW from here on out) I think he registered here and is posting as Gozu.
TIQ (Thread in Question)
So Gozu is looking for a new car stereo His requirements are:
[ul]
[li]Reasonable price[/li][li]built in HD tuner[/li][li]Aux jack[/li][/ul]
I read the thread, and went to Crutchfield and do a search for a receiver with both HD and an aux input. Two items were returned. One clearly did not meet Gozu’s spec as it cost $1400. the other appears to, so I post a link to the search page.
So then the EOW tells me my search is deficient. Deficient? That is what a IRS auditor tells you about the amount of taxes you paid 2 years ago. Deficient? Fuck you asshole, fuck your deficient. I found you a receiver that met your requirements. You never said the aux jack had to be on the front panel, and could not be an aux unit.
So I suggested that he buy the unit and the aux unit and run the wire to the center console. Please note that I identified the aux unit by part number KS-U58. Write that number down, you will see it again in this post. Since that combo is $159+ $39.95 is still in the realm of what I consider reasonable. This was not acceptable to the EOW.
Then ntucker shows up with this witty comment

Wrong asshole, I gave him exactly what he asked for. The EOW did not ask for what he wanted. Then I suggest that exactly what the EOW wants may not exist.
Then the EOW comes back in and tells me

Erroneous? iPod adapter? Fuck you asshole, learn to fucking read. The adapter I named by part number (KS-U58) is a aux adapter you idiot. The iPod adapter is a KSPD100. Learn to read, you blithering idiot. I didn’t get lucky, I gave you just what you asked for. My post lacking in detail? I gave you a link to EXACTLY what you asked for. What more detail did you want? did you want me to calculate the cost of shipping? Does the EOW want me to book a ticket and fly to fucking Florida and install the motherfucker for you? Just what does it take to make the Emperor happy? Damned if I know. I have heard that the people in Hell want ice water.
Then to show us peons just how magnanimous the EOW can be he posts

 :dubious: Yeah right. Fuck off and die EOW.

Then today ntucker comes back to tell me that I can’t read. He inferred from the OP that the aux unit could not be a separate unit. I did not infer that. The requirements were:
[ul]
[li]Reasonable price[/li][li]built in HD tuner[/li][li]Aux jack[/li][/ul]
I went by what was written, not what your crystal ball told you. Now if there were a choice of 15 or 20 of these receivers, and I suggested a unit that required a aux box, and other units did not, you might have a point. But since at this point in time there is only one unit on the market that meets the listed requirements, fuck you too ntucker.

All good deeds…etc.

Jesus Christ, man, switch to decaf.

-1 for lack of moos.

WOO MOO man what a ride?

Please learn the difference between infer and imply. It’s kinda like the difference between swallow and puke.

For some strange reason, that linked thread made my eyes feel…strained.

Infer: to guess; speculate; surmise.
since I can substitute guess or surmise in the existing sentences with no change it meaning I believe infer is correct.

Looking at the usage notes at Dictionary.com I find this for infer:
—Usage note Infer has been used to mean “to hint or suggest” since the 16th century by speakers and writers of unquestioned ability and eminence: The next speaker criticized the proposal, inferring that it was made solely to embarrass the government. Despite its long history, many 20th-century usage guides condemn the use, maintaining that the proper word for the intended sense is imply and that to use infer is to lose a valuable distinction between the two words.
Although the claimed distinction has probably existed chiefly in the pronouncements of usage guides, and although the use of infer to mean “to suggest” usually produces no ambiguity, the distinction too has a long history and is widely observed by many speakers and writers.

Thanks for playing.

Maybe a bit over the top, but a valid rant nonetheless.

If you’re going to ask the board a favor, and someone tries their best to help, be grateful, not rude and dismissive. Even if the help is not exactly what you wanted, you have no right to insult the person who offered it.

No, like the moos in the original EOW thread.

Where did Gozu insult the OP?

The trick is to read the thread like the poster is the pitch-man for the old “Crazy Eddies” commercials.

“Crazy Eddies! Now on Masspequa highway and Somerset! Our Aux Jacks are INSANE!!!

It wasn’t an insult as much as dismissive and ungrateful.

In finding that, you missed this on the same page:

Infer is sometimes confused with imply, but the distinction is a useful one. When we say that a speaker or sentence implies something, we mean that it is conveyed or suggested without being stated outright: When the mayor said that she would not rule out a business tax increase, she implied (not inferred) that some taxes might be raised. Inference, on the other hand, is the activity performed by a reader or interpreter in drawing conclusions that are not explicit in what is said: When the mayor said that she would not rule out a tax increase, we inferred that she had been consulting with some new financial advisers, since her old advisers were in favor of tax reductions.

So you want people to be grateful to you when you inform them of something, but you want to be a pisshead when someone informs you. I guess you pitted Gozu for encroaching on your game.

Gozu specifically started a thread asking for information, which Rick supplied. Nowhere in this thread did I see Rick say, “hey, just in case I make some minor error in word usage, spelling, or general English grammar please be sure to correct me like an asshole; it’s okay to do this even though it’s completely unrelated to the thread topic!”

If Rick had asked for that type of “informing” then your statement here might make sense, but he did not and it does not.

The fact that Rick’s usage is arguably correct in the first place sort of undermines your noble crusade to promote proper word usage on the SDMB.

That is exactly what both ntucker and I did.
Original sentence: He inferred from the OP that the aux unit could not be a separate unit. I did not infer that.
The “He” is referring to ntucker mentioned in the previous sentence. Nutucker is a reader of the OP. He inferred (guessed, speculated; or surmised) or drew a conclusion of what the OP meant by his post. I was another reader and drew a different conclusion. Which is exactly the activity you quoted.

OG knows I am a terrible speller, and not much better at grammar, but I don’t see where the problem is. Perhaps you could explain it in a way my 15 watt brain can handle.

His usage is correct.

:smack: DOH! I knew I forgot something.
::: Hangs head in shame:::

Please allow me to correct my slip up.

Moo, moo moo-moo, Moo moo-moo-moo, moo Moooooooooooo, moo.
Feel free to install those anyplace they fit in the OP.

Better?

From Gozu’s OP:

I can’t imagine why anyone would think that a separately purchased and installed AUX jack would not be equally unacceptable.

Agreed. I just ran across the original thread and couldn’t understand how Rick thought an add-on solution was acceptible to the OP.

Nevertheless, the “gratitude” for Rick’s efforts seemed very back-handed after having made such condescending commentary. I think this pitting is warranted.
