So You Think You Can Dance 6/27

No thread yet?
Debbie Allen looks great and actually has something to say!
It's almost annoying to me that all the dancers are so freakin nice...philanthropists and journalists! Where are the self absorbed divas?
Even Cedric, who I decided to dislike last week (after they THREW FAINA UNDER THE BUS) turns out to be charming and selfless, damn him.

That quickstep was a whole hell of a lot of fun.

Uh, now I feel bad, I was just thinking, "man, I hate that Jessie, I wish she would have a fake heart attack or something."
I may have to vote for Pasha. I'm not proud.

I cannot believe the caliber of the dancers this year. They're all so good. Last year there were 4 outstanding dancers but the rest were just so-so. This year I can't decide who to vote for. I'm also quite impressed with the choreography from the various genres. My one favorite show this summer.

I'm not sure what the difference is between jazz and contemporary, but the routine last night was incredible. I also don't get the difference between hip-hop and krump, but oh well.

Also what's the diff between hip hop and breakdancing? Loved the jazz routine too, one that will be remembered when all the others fade into nothingness. Really think Cedric will be going home and the girl in the hospital if she's not out and from Nigel's description of her condition, it doesn't sound hopeful for her. Kudos to Pasha for carrying off a hot romantic dance with dumpy grandma. Debbie Allen was just too Paula for me. Too nicey nice and superlatives without any constructive criticism.
Must admit that SYTYCD's result shows beat all others hands down with their dance for your lives segment. Finally something new and different to watch. American Idol take note.

Our power went out, so we missed the entirety of Lauren and Neil. How did they do?

They did a tango. I thought it was pretty dull, but that could just be because I don't care for that style of dance.

Hok and Jaimie were AMAZING.

I wonder if Cedric's gonna get a lot of sympathy votes for being so self-effacing.

I'm finding I hate the 'intro' segments. Sometimes they plant an idea about how good/bad the routine will be before we see it! I don't want to hear how it went in practice. I want to see the routine with a 'clean' mind.

I'll add my admiration to Hok and Jamie's number...that was just an absolute joy to watch. I'm not a huge fan of contemporary types of dancing, but this really fit the music and was great to watch. Nobody else really stands out in my mind as doing anything that really caught my eye. The quick-step was done very well, but the rhomba tango? whatever it was was just sort of so-so. I liked the one dancer (Cedric) that basically said that the judges were right, and that his weakness was that he couldn't do other style's. I hope that Debbie Allen keeps her word and gives him a place at one of her schools. I also liked that Nigel made sure to get her to say "for free" on national TV.

Wotta show!

Frankly, I don't want anyone to go home. One good piece after another.

If they'd wanted a pure jazz routine, they would have picked a different choreographer. That was contemporary with a couple of moves that were vaguely reminiscent of mature Bob Fosse. Not nitpicking, just explaining. The piece itself was exquisite, and the analysis that it played to the strengths of each dancer without sacrificing the vision of the routine was dead-on.

We had two guest judges last night: Debbie Allen and the long-forgotten original Mary Murphy from two years ago, with her nitpicky critiques of form and general bitchiness. Only appeared briefly, but it was good to see her back.

Debbie Allen was putting on the full Maya Angelou, wasn't she?

12-15 years ago, I was ushering at a theater where Phylicia Rashad was in a play. Winter traffic made Debbie Allen and her family about ten minutes late arriving. She screamed loudly at everyone in the lobby, and especially at me while I showed them to their seats. My sweater kept getting caught on the velcro on her son's parka. That's my Debbie Allen story, for what it's worth.

My wife was in love with Pasha's legwork.

I loved Hok and Jamie's number - admittedly, mostly because of Hok's performance, and I am biased in his favor anyway, but it was the most innovative and the most controlled. But how is it definitive jazz? It just seemed like modern/contermporary to me (except actually memorable). Can someone who knows more about it explain it?
I don't think Debbie really had much constructive to say, but it was nice of her to make that offer to Cedric, especially after he got reamed by the judges when it was their fault he was there in the first place. And why the hell did Mia choreograph him sitting there crying through half his routine? That was pretty unfair, and I don't even like the guy.

edit: On post I see I have one answer already. :P But if anyone would care to elucidate, in terms of jazz-representative steps and positions, that'd be great.

That's exactly what I was thinking!

I'm a little concerned for Pasha and Anya. I'm not sure they connect with people, and I'm not really sure why I say that. Maybe it's something about English as their second language, but they seem to be culturally segregated in their own minds at least. Maybe it's a mild jealousy coming from others. Maybe I'm just all wet. [...shrug...]

The answers simple: Cedric can't dance with other people, he just makes them look worse. I think her reasoning would be if people paid more attention to Shauna they might forget about Cedric and it'll keep them out of the bottom three.

They judges were showing favoritism towards Lauren due to her connection to the show in past seasons. Anya got the nod because of her partnering successes. They probably felt that Jessi is unpopular with viewers and this is her second dance for her life.

I think Jessi is the most interesting personality. Her dance with Pasha was killer and if not for the unfortunate medical calamity, she would've been safe had she performed it a night earlier. She does tend to wear unfortunate outfits when dancing for her life, though. But I thought her hip hop solo was extremely good.

I think the judges' logic on the women was not due to their dancing, per se. I was shocked when Jessi told us that her hospitalization was due to dehydration and that she'd had the problem before. If so, wouldn't she, being on national TV and competing for her life, taken steps to mitigate it on her own? I mean, maybe she did, but... They also can't take the chance of it happening again.

And it almost seemed, after she was cut, that she'd expected to automatically stay, possibly from "sympathy vote"? As a former performer, I just got a vibe of entitlement from her that I've seen (and experienced myself, sad to say) before.

That said, I was pissed about Cedric. He did get a sympathy vote from the callers. They should have kicked him out long ago. He's taking a spot better a dancer should have, no matter that he is so unique when in his own style and by himself.

No kidding! Did you see the very end? When Cat said, "Your votes sent these two dancers home" as she always does, Jessi (just before they cut to the end credits) pointed to herself and mouthed "Not me!"

She's clearly pissed. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I don't like her solo and I don't understand why that's her genre, because I think she dances everything else better than what she's supposed to be good at.

Maybe the judges also decided that there's only room for one female hip-hop dancer and Sara is clearly the better of the two, IMO.

ETA: Is Jessi the one who collapsed during the auditions?

Faina is the one who collapsed during the auditions. Surely someone else will beat me to that in the time I take to post.

Anyway, I completely agree that Jessi felt entitled to be there. But I never liked her from the start with the baby oil, and thought her solos this week and last were awful.

To agree with Nigel, none of the female solos were very good. What the hell was with Anya's dress?

I place the blame for that squarely on Mary the Shrieking Idiot. If she hadn't spent 10 minutes last night ripping the kid a new one for having the audacity to still be there after the judges didn't cut him last week, no one would have voted for them, they'd have been in the bottom three again, and Cedric would have rightly gone.

I guess I'm the only one who hates that Jessie was cut. Even the way she was cut with a terse, sudden announcement with no explanation. I think Nigel was right when he said that she has a unique hip-hop style that lends itself to other styles. Her waltz with Pasha was the smoothest, most fluid waltz I've ever seen on the show. I have a feeling that Nigel was the dissenter, which is why he blasted whats-her-name for moseying out to the stage and taking her sweet time getting started. So long, Jessie. You was robbed.

Danny is the guy who was cut. Terrible shame, that.

The music from Hok and Jaimie's dance is "The Chairman's Waltz" from the Memoirs of a Geisha soundtrack.

Absolutely! They should have said they didn't like him, then let him move off the stage. They gave him plenty of time to play to the call-in audience. He has talent, but just isn't right to keep.

And when they announced that Cedric and his partner were safe, I thought the guy in the other couple, Danny(?), was going to pop a nut! He was so obviously expecting it to be Cedric do to all the lead up.

Agreed. Additionally, her "he's my boyfriend" worship of Pasha, and her "but if I go back to having a job, then my life is over!" suggest a very fragile identity and personality.

I had to watch the last 15 minutes of Wednesday's show before Thursday's show, so I didn't get to see Pasha dance with the choreographer until last night. It was interesting to see the differences between the 2 women. I though Jessi did a better job.

I also had to laugh when Debbie Allen said, "It was like watching you dance with Bette Midler out there!" I had just said the same thing word-for-word while they were dancing.

I thought Jessi was incredible during the recap of the missed dance, last night, and I thought her solo was better than Anya's and Lauren's. She seemed to be really as crushed as she said she'd be if she were cut. I'd hate to hear she did anything rash.

The waltz (if that's the dance you're thinking of: pink dress, with the spin) was Danny and Anya.

Just catching up after vacationing.

If an amateur viewer like me can see that Cedric needs to go, then he's got to go. Mary Murphy should stop the theatrics and let the audience make up their minds without having her rouse up sympathy votes. Have him take Debbie Allen up on her scholarship offer and say goodbye.

It's a shame Jesus had to go when Cedric got to stay. I'm wondering if part of his farewell speech was deliberately cut or just a technical miscue.

Jessi's dance with Pasha was hot, hot, hot and I think her solo was better than the others. I can only think that she was cut because they feared for her health. I wish that she could have risen above her shock and thanked the show for giving her a chance instead of acting wronged. It wasn't anybody's fault that she had an abnormal EKG.

I thought Anya's solo was terrible. She never varies her move.

I hope the show is using their clout to secure visas for Pasha's family to come and see him.

Loved Hok & Jamie's number but if that was a "jazz" routine, then I know less about dance than I thought.

Dominick bugs the shit out of me when he hams it up for the camera. I wish he'd cut it out and just let his dancing do the talking.

Lacey & Kameron are giving Anya & Danny a run for the money.

Cedric & Shauna should have gone last night.

Yeah, how will the pairs work, because by my count there still is an extra person.

Cedric needs to go home.

I don't think that's it because I think Nigel would have had a much different reaction about it. When he announced the results, he seemed angry. I don't think his reaction, if the other voters had expressed concern for her health, would have been anger.
