Lacey and Kameron choreographed by Mia Michaels: Wow. Just… wow.
Typing this as I watch:
Hok and Jamie, hip-hop - that was fun! They needed some more practice to get the sync’d up parts a little better sync’d up, but I liked it.
Danny and Anya, jive - She seemed all energy and he seemed kinda… prancy? It was well done but he just seemed to have a different quality of energy from her, which just made it slightly off for me.
Kameron and Lacey, contemporary - It was a strange dance, but I think they did well. I thought Kameron was adorable. I believed his emotion more than hers, though they had great chemistry. (haha, loved Nigel’s little dig at the Soprano’s ending)
Sabra and Domnic, disco - I hated this choreography. I don’t think I can fairly judge the dancers because the choreography just kinda annoyed me.
Ricky and Ashlee, tango - This is totally not within their control but I just can’t totally get into the whole dance partnering where the guy is shorter than the girl. It just makes it look like a kid dancing with a woman. My god, though, is she ALL legs?! OH MY GOD when Dan said that it was like a mother and son dancing? I had almost typed that instead of kid/woman. I totally agree.
Ok that’s the first hour, I’m gonna post and then watch the second hour.
I agree- it was very awkward. Sabra is absolutely stunning and I love how strong and light her solo style is- I hope she stays. I would love to see her dance contemporary.
Pasha knocked me out on the smooth waltz. I don’t think I’ve seen the other dancers stay in character so well.
Loved the vagabonds (Sara and Jesus). Wade’s choreography is crazy and fun.
In the HipHop routine, Cedric was awesome. Faina was totally out of her element.
Jesus and Sara, cabaret thingie - what is this, auditions for Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video? This is some dumb shit, right here. I think they’re doing it ok, but I am embarrassed for them for having to do it at all.
Pasha and Jessi, waltz - I’m getting no passion, just going through the motions. I didn’t care for it… it seemed like a technical performance.
Cedric and Faina, hip-hop - err… they were so out of sync it was not working for me.
Neil and Luaren, salsa - I think they lost a lot of energy by tthe end. It was ok but not great.
Jimmy and Shauna, broadway - Wow I haven’t heard this song in forever (Ease On Down the Road). This is too corny for me. Don’t like it.
For me, it’s too early in the competition to pick out the worst. I do agree with the judges a lot. But, I do have favorites already.
Hok and Jamie were great to watch.
I liked the Kameron and Lacey contemporary dance. I was glued to the television while watching it.
I feel sorry for Ricky. I thought the dance was good, in theory, but I too can’t get over her having longer legs than him.
Faina and Jessi are also my favorites. I couldn’t pick between them.
But I do know for a fact that I need to get me a dancer.
Forgot to add that I enjoyed the Waltz simply for the fact that I love Waltzes and if you don’t, you suck.
That is all.
There was plenty of “diluted” choreography designed to cater to the inexperience of some of the dancers in particular styles.
HOWEVER: In the past, there have been plenty of dancers who couldn’t cut it even then, which can not be said of tonight, with a very few possible exception, such as Faina’s hip hop, perhaps.
Our favorites were the Vagabonds and Lacey’s dance. She was really going for it on those leaps, and could easily have clubbed him in the head with her thigh, knocking him to the ground and leaving her sailing face first onto the stage. They have great trust in each other as partners already for to make those jumps at that speed.
And Anya drips sex.
I am really curious as to what you folks got out of Lacey and Kameron choreographed by Mia Michaels. It was so impressive and wrought with pain and high intensity emotion but I couldn’t help wondering if we were seeing the danced short version of the movie where the two drug agents end up dating and getting into the drugs. Sorry I can’t remember the name…
Anya is so. fucking. hot. […Homer drooling…] Mia’s routine was just amazing. Kameron and Lacey were both great. Special props to Lacey for her complete submission. But I must say, equal props to Kameron for making it possible for her to do so. Mia has made me a fan of modern dance, beginning with last season. Also, Pasha and Jessi were excellent. Both were perfectly fluid.
Rush?
Ricky’s face irritates me, which is not the nicest thing in the world to say, but so be it.
So far my favorites are Hok (of course!), though I’m worried how he’ll perform in other styles; Sara and Jesus, because I loved that routine; and Pasha, for the hotness. The only routine I watched twice was Danny and Anya’s.
Was JC Chasez sitting behind Wade Robson in the audience?
I was disappointed in some of the choreography this week. Both Shane Sparks routines seemed a little flat. Perhaps it’s because he had non-hip-hop dancers, but I’m not convinced of that. Also, the tango was awful, if only because of the ridiculous music. I told my husband that the salsa piece reminded me of a cruise-line performance.
On the flip side, Mia’s piece was heart-rending. As Liberal said, Mia has converted me to contemporary/lyrical. This piece and the Travis-Heidi piece from last year both brought me to tears.
I also loved the waltz. Jessi and Pasha really brought a performance to the waltz, which, judging from previous waltzes, isn’t easy to do.
The Wade Robson vagabond piece was great, too. It didn’t scream, “technically difficult” - though I’m sure it was-; it just entertained. Sara and Jesus clearly had fun with it.
For those who need a reminder of Kameron and Lacey’s dance.
The more I watch it the more I like it.
And for Travis and Heidi last year.
Back in the day, Cyd Charisse was taller than Gene Kelly, but you never really noticed (unless you went out of your way to) because the choreography was so good in masking the height difference. Ricky is nice enough, but he really has his work cut out for him–which is a shame since there are a lot of tall men that could’ve paired with her just as easily.
I think Faina is a real hottie, too and I hope her so-so hip-hop doesn’t send her packing prematurely.
I don’t think Faina is as naturally talented as some (most?) of the others, but she has to work really hard to make herself look really good. In the group choreography session a couple weeks ago she was clearly frustrated that she wasn’t picking it up as fast as the others in the group, and as fast as they expected her to. Last night, as well, during the rehearsal segment she was obviously struggling. However, once she picks it up, I think she has great form and ability.
Bingo! Thanks! I knew Jennifer Jason Leigh had been the co-star.
I wish Lacey would tone down her hair. She reminds me of Lisa Marie Presley, who also looks better with a softer hair color. The dance was great, though. I also enjoyed the waltz which was quite elegant. Wade Robson’s number was, predictably, funky and fun. I’m glad that I didn’t have to learn Shane Sparks’ numbers. Holy crap, that’s a lot of intricacies in one routine.
I was once again struck how talented these kids are. Why, oh why, must we vote a couple off tonight? At least allow them to do more than one dance before cutting them! That poor couple who were forced to dance disco were put at such a disadvantage by having that awful choreographer. Or is it that disco just looks amateurish in comparison to the other genres?
I distinctly remember voting off the dancer and not the couple last season, which meant that some dancers had to be re-paired mid-season. Now you vote for the couple? Wow, that doesn’t seem fair, though it’s hard to keep track of 20 dancers.
The format seems to be the same as it was last season: between top 20 and top 10, audience votes for the couples they want to stick around. Each dancer in the bottom 3 couples then has to dance solo for 30 seconds and based on that, the previous performance, what they were drinking earlier (Mary), and how hot the girl is (Nigel), they cut one male and one female, not necessarily from the same couple. Should they be from different partnerships, then their former partners are re-paired together. Say Ricky and Faina were to go tonight as a random example, Cedric and Ashlee would then be partnered next week.
From top 10 onwards, audience votes for individual dancers and all partnerships are changed every week
I think the first few rounds have a boy & girl voted off (with some inevitable repairings resulting), and only when they winnow down to a dozen or so do they start picking them off one by one.
