So You Think You Can Dance 6/27

No thread yet?
Debbie Allen looks great and actually has something to say!
It’s almost annoying to me that all the dancers are so freakin nice…philanthropists and journalists! Where are the self absorbed divas?
Even Cedric, who I decided to dislike last week (after they THREW FAINA UNDER THE BUS) turns out to be charming and selfless, damn him.

That quickstep was a whole hell of a lot of fun.

Not sure about the hip hop routine…but Danny is an absolute cupcake.

Toothsome little morsel, isn’t he?

Jamie and Hok, that was exquisite.

Uh, now I feel bad, I was just thinking, “man, I hate that Jessie, I wish she would have a fake heart attack or something.”
I may have to vote for Pasha. I’m not proud.

What a bizarre turn of events!

I cannot believe the caliber of the dancers this year. They’re all so good. Last year there were 4 outstanding dancers but the rest were just so-so. This year I can’t decide who to vote for. I’m also quite impressed with the choreography from the various genres. My one favorite show this summer.

I’m not sure what the difference is between jazz and contemporary, but the routine last night was incredible. I also don’t get the difference between hip-hop and krump, but oh well.

Also what’s the diff between hip hop and breakdancing? Loved the jazz routine too, one that will be remembered when all the others fade into nothingness. Really think Cedric will be going home and the girl in the hospital if she’s not out and from Nigel’s description of her condition, it doesn’t sound hopeful for her. Kudos to Pasha for carrying off a hot romantic dance with dumpy grandma. Debbie Allen was just too Paula for me. Too nicey nice and superlatives without any constructive criticism.
Must admit that SYTYCD’s result shows beat all others hands down with their dance for your lives segment. Finally something new and different to watch. American Idol take note.

Our power went out, so we missed the entirety of Lauren and Neil. How did they do?

They did a tango. I thought it was pretty dull, but that could just be because I don’t care for that style of dance.

Hok and Jaimie were AMAZING.

I wonder if Cedric’s gonna get a lot of sympathy votes for being so self-effacing.

I’m finding I hate the ‘intro’ segments. Sometimes they plant an idea about how good/bad the routine will be before we see it! I don’t want to hear how it went in practice. I want to see the routine with a ‘clean’ mind.

I’ll add my admiration to Hok and Jamie’s number…that was just an absolute joy to watch. I’m not a huge fan of contemporary types of dancing, but this really fit the music and was great to watch. Nobody else really stands out in my mind as doing anything that really caught my eye. The quick-step was done very well, but the rhomba tango? whatever it was was just sort of so-so. I liked the one dancer (Cedric) that basically said that the judges were right, and that his weakness was that he couldn’t do other style’s. I hope that Debbie Allen keeps her word and gives him a place at one of her schools. I also liked that Nigel made sure to get her to say “for free” on national TV.

Wotta show!

Frankly, I don’t want anyone to go home. One good piece after another.

If they’d wanted a pure jazz routine, they would have picked a different choreographer. That was contemporary with a couple of moves that were vaguely reminiscent of mature Bob Fosse. Not nitpicking, just explaining. The piece itself was exquisite, and the analysis that it played to the strengths of each dancer without sacrificing the vision of the routine was dead-on.

We had two guest judges last night: Debbie Allen and the long-forgotten original Mary Murphy from two years ago, with her nitpicky critiques of form and general bitchiness. Only appeared briefly, but it was good to see her back.

Debbie Allen was putting on the full Maya Angelou, wasn’t she?

12-15 years ago, I was ushering at a theater where Phylicia Rashad was in a play. Winter traffic made Debbie Allen and her family about ten minutes late arriving. She screamed loudly at everyone in the lobby, and especially at me while I showed them to their seats. My sweater kept getting caught on the velcro on her son’s parka. That’s my Debbie Allen story, for what it’s worth.

My wife was in love with Pasha’s legwork.

I loved Hok and Jamie’s number - admittedly, mostly because of Hok’s performance, and I am biased in his favor anyway, but it was the most innovative and the most controlled. But how is it definitive jazz? It just seemed like modern/contermporary to me (except actually memorable). Can someone who knows more about it explain it?
I don’t think Debbie really had much constructive to say, but it was nice of her to make that offer to Cedric, especially after he got reamed by the judges when it was their fault he was there in the first place. And why the hell did Mia choreograph him sitting there crying through half his routine? That was pretty unfair, and I don’t even like the guy.

edit: On post I see I have one answer already. :stuck_out_tongue: But if anyone would care to elucidate, in terms of jazz-representative steps and positions, that’d be great.

That’s exactly what I was thinking!

I’m a little concerned for Pasha and Anya. I’m not sure they connect with people, and I’m not really sure why I say that. Maybe it’s something about English as their second language, but they seem to be culturally segregated in their own minds at least. Maybe it’s a mild jealousy coming from others. Maybe I’m just all wet. […shrug…]

The answers simple: Cedric can’t dance with other people, he just makes them look worse. I think her reasoning would be if people paid more attention to Shauna they might forget about Cedric and it’ll keep them out of the bottom three.

Cedric is safe!?!?!?!?!?

Does anyone know how tall Kat Deeley is? She towers over almost all the contestants, male and female.
