Kid Nation 10/10- "Bless Us And Keep Us Safe" (SPOILERS)

This week, we learned the perils of state-organized religion, as combined church services caused a ruckus, but the town was willing to hold their own prayers, and chose a collection of holy books from various religions over a miniature golf course in yet another tricky this-or-that. All is well, except for Cody, who decided to leave after missing his family and girlfriend. Morgan gets the gold star for her maternal care of the younger kids, and Jared gets crazier.

Next time: “Viva La Revolucion!” It’s election time. One thing’s for sure- Taylor must go!

Finally a show getting it right. I was about to pull out of this show for the season as well, After Heroes and Prison Break both are failing.

Taylor WILL go.

I would pay to see it.

Hard to believe this show is beating my old favorites.

Not to mention how mature the kids are. I still can’t get over the entire g/f situation Cody had. And how he handled it. (Well, at least, how he discussed it to the camera.)

Jared needs constant subtitling. Between the weird voice and the fact that you cannot get the missing words from context (as he is always in no sense mode), makes it impossible to know what he is saying.

Taylor will go. That is a sure thing. The scary part is that I think she is doing it on purpose so she can then come back and earn a gold star. I hope her parents are taping it to show it to her when she is 25 (if she is still out of prison, or detox, or whatever)

I am slowly coming to like Gregg. He seems to have gotten over the whole gold star thing and just works because it is the right thing to do.

The whole religion thing was such an idiotic plot device that I cannot believe they let it pass.

I am worried for the green team. They are not good at ANY type of challenge, apparently.

The girlfriend bit was silly enough to be funny, but wrong nonetheless. This is not the age for girlfriends, it is the age for cars and dolls.

What were they doing “shots” of? It looked clear, so water maybe?

Did I hear Taylor accuse someone of being bossy and mean? Bwaaaahaaaahhhhhaaaaaa!

It’s good to see that the kids aren’t blindly following orders from that phony journal. Wise decision, letting the town vote on the reward. Funny how kids learn so young about how divisive religion can be.

What’s next? Start a school?

Who’s doing laundry? Morgan’s white coat looked cleaner this week.

Bleach?

I don’t think that one went according to their plan. They all wanted the golf. They just figured they would be seen as flexible leaders if they let the people vote on what they thought was a sure vote to what they wanted. Alas, the vote went for the bibles (contrary to anyone’s expectations). Ouch.

I hope the next book tip is to have a court and a prison. That Taylor needs to be straightened out. Being a Council member and just refusing to do your job is not something that should be allowed. Otherwise, it is all ruling class and people do what they want.

I wish one of the rewards would be a case of Chapstick.

Tuned in for the first time and was impressed on how entertaining this show was.
So I gather there is no eliminations (unless teh kid wants to leave on their own) Good concept. Sure they fight for gold stars but at least it isn’t as cut throat as the adult equivilents.

Interesting to see the built-in prejudices of the kids regarding other religions. It almost proves they didn’t develop these ideas on their own but have had them impressed on them because they don’t understand why they don’t like the others beliefs. An interesting psychological experiment. It may have been staged but I liked the other kids learning about beliefs on their own rather than be forced to

Some of the kids must have brought some. Laurel’s lips look ready to bleed but l’il Taylor appears well-moisturized.

And poor Greg, with a huge scab on his chin. Didn’t his mom tell him to leave those zits alone?

What do you mean by prejudices? I don’t watch the show, I haven’t had time, but I’m curious.

What is that accent that Laurel has? Most of it sounds like normal unadorned English, then she busts out a word that sounds like Katherine Hepburn.

It’s Southie!

South Boston, that is.

Now, because you said that and it seems sooo obvious and foreshadowed, I’m wondering if somehow it won’t happen. Anytime I think I know what’s going to happen on a reality show, the opposite happens. There’s going to be campaigning, so maybe somehow she’ll win people over? Seems vastly unlikely, but…

I see her as a successful upper middle level manager, all of whose underlings hate her and wonder how she got so high in the organization. She’s thick-skinned, totally self-centered, and those seem to be the people who go far in corporate America-- the person who cares the least about others gets the most from them, in my cynical experience.

They de-emphasized his dickishness this week. He is very useful and I don’t blame Anjay for pushing for his rewards. I don’t think Mike would willingly give in, though.

I totally agree. LAME.

Four of the nicest kids in town, Sophia, Michael, Morgan, and Laurel, are Greens. Seems like they are long on interpersonal skills and short on practical ones.

Again, I totally agree with you. It was weird for a 9 year old to be talking about his GF so avidly. What does it even mean to them at this age?

I didn’t catch any out and out prejudices, just a natural bias in favor of the kid’s own religion. “Christians are best!” from the Christians, “Jew crew!” from the Jewish kids. Little Emilie didn’t seem to know for sure what she was.

If there were any hateful or ignorant statements, I missed them. The kids were reluctant to discuss religion at first but their curiosity won out, especially when they saw Anjay with the icon and the incense.

Huh. I’d heard Boston accents before, but I didn’t notice that they were similar to hers. Of course my experience with that accent stems from transplanted dudes that are drunk at a sports bar. And that guy from Average Joe: Hawaii.

There were numerous instances of ignorance expressed rudely:

Once girl, Kelsey, said dismissively about Hinduism “I don’t even know what it is, do they like, worship spirits or what?” And all the girls sitting with her laughed contemptuously.

That one blond kid Colton on the Yellow team was very snotty about Hanukkah, telling Eric, who was trying to explain why it was so special, to shut up about it already, how stupid a holiday about 8 days of oil was. He was quite belligerent and Eric seemed pissed.

Olivia flat-out said she was not interested in other religions or their prayers. I think she specificially mentioned Judaism but I know someone did. She said she was very strong in her beliefs and that was all she wanted to know about. It came off as kind of creepy after her so-sweet portrayal last week.

However, they did all seem to come around after the service, with one of the boys (looking on the website I think his name was Pharaoh  who we haven’t seen much before ) crying and saying how moved he was that everyone was so open and kind about religion in the end.

I was looking on the website to see the kids’ names, and damn there are some kids who have gotten zero screen time. Did you guys realize there’s a girl named Migle on the show?

True, some of the kids could have been less rude, but they’re kids. Some of them are showing off. They haven’t studied religion, except for their own, so they’re going to say some dumb stuff. They’re not going to worry about being politically correct. But none of them came off as hateful. Ignorant is even too strong a word, I think. They were uninformed, and after a bit of peer pressure was applied, they opened their minds a bit.

One of the girls, I’m not sure if it was Olivia or someone else, said how she “did not want to be around Jewish people or Atheist people.”

During that whole religious debate, as they’re talking about Christians & Jews & Muslims & Hindus & Atheists & such, I couldn’t help but think:

WHERE ARE THE PAGANS??!??
