Kid Nation 12/12 "We've All Decided To Go Mad!"

(With apologies to Paul Anka and Frank Sinatra)

And so, the show begins
With the job board ablaze in fire
The kids, they put it out
But then they soon begin to tire
They learn it all was planned
For the job board is now thrown away
From here, for these three days
They’ll do it their way.

The kids, they start to loot
All of the stores of all their plunder
And soon, the whole darn town
Has gone insane and torn asunder
But Zach and DK know
That this whole plan has torn it astray
So they and the council plan
To do it their way.

The kids clean the town up
And then Jon Karsh, he calls them and shouts
To tell the Council that
The last Gold Star will be handed out
It’s hard, it’s so hard that
It brings to tears poor little DK
But then, over to Zach
It’s given away.

The girls of Yellow side
They want to sleep with chickens it’s true
And their friend Emilie
She wants to sleep alongside them too
She can’t so she is told
She throws a fit, and then goes astray
But soon is comforted
By clever Migle.

A party will be had
The last challenge is to get ready
Build tables, clean the trash
And make a boatload of spaghetti
The kids, they get it done
And just when they’re about to par-tay
Their parents come along
On this final day.

And now, just one more thing
Before they all hang up their collars
Just give out three Gold Stars
Each one is fifty thousand dollars
To hard-working Sophia
And kind Morgan they’re gave away
And then, a final one
To a changed Migle.

What are these kids? What are they not?
If not themselves, then they have naught.
On this whole show, I was impressed
I give my thanks to CBS
And to the cast, they had a blast
And did it theeeeeeeeeeir way!

Bravo, again!

I want some follow-up. Some of these kids definitely gained some confidence that might change their lives, but I wonder about the kids we never saw. There was another new one tonight – I’ve already forgotten who it was. What happened when they watched the show and saw the same 10-15 kids get all the attention?

I wouldn’t mind if CBS wanted to do this again, and I’d like to see the same kids try again (without that stupid journal). A year is a long time when you’re ten.

Think they’ll do it again?

CBS had auditions for a Kid Nation 2, but they haven’t greenlit the show yet. All we know is if there will be a second, it will be filmed outside the United States.

It just sucked that Morgan and Sophia got the super gold stars (deservedly) but Laurel didn’t. C’mon, that Migle girl? She was nowhere for 40 days and all of the sudden she is best of the best? bleh.

Yep, Laurel should have gotten it. I’m surprised they even considered Mike but it was nice that they did.

It was nice of them to give Zach a star, but how insincere was his speech, after he almost begged for a star last week. Or the week before, whenever.

Taylor and her gang and their rejection of Emilie almost made me ashamed to be female. I’d forgotten that little girls clique up at an early age.

I really enjoyed the finale. It looks like they did a good job, with only a bit of “lord of the flies” involved. It was also really interesting to see Greg evolve from being a young teenage punk, to a spokesman for the tribe and surrogate big brother to them. It was neat to watch Greg as Zack broke down - you could see him wanting to hug the kid, but couldn’t do it probably due to peer pressure, but as soon as Zack was done with his speech, he went right to Greg for a hug.

I enjoyed this show, and I’d really like to see a “year later” follow-up to see how the kids are doing.

Really? Because of the flap over child labor?

I’d love to see kids from other countries do something like this. What would they do for the setting?

Pretty much, yeah. But it won’t be foreign kids- the audition sign-up sheet said specifically that potential contestants must be U.S. residents.

Oh for pete’s sake. Do the producers not know that millions (?) of kids outside the US speak English? Or do they worry that foreign kids might not be so malleable?

Being a Sinatra fan and a Kid Nation viewer, this is one of the best posts I have ever read on SDMB! Fan-PHREAKEN-tastic mobo85!

There is a show over here called “Shipwrecked”, where late teens (16-19, IIRC) are dropped off on a desert island with some basic supplies and left to fend for themselves (at least in the original run, it’s been revived as more of a competition with cash prizes, but I’ve not watched it). In the third series they included teens from the US and Australia. As I remember it, the Americans didn’t fit in, and there were constant arguments.

That’s because some of the kids got useful items like a knife, gun or bulletproof vest, and other kids got stupid things like a fork or an ordinary dartboard dart.

I’m interested to see where Sophia will be 5-10 years from now. Despite her never holding a council position, she seemed to have the most leadership potential and quite a bit of practical (un)common sense to her.
