So. Who's for Risk?

We seemed to have some interest in playing some online Risk in this thread.

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/...d.php?t=452346

So, I've created a game in each of Sijinn's linked game forums.

Grand Strategy, Game #84233 My User Name there is Zaphod23

Conquer Club, Game #1660768 same user name.

I've chosen 8 players and adjacent reinforcements, meaning each army can move one territory at the end of your turn. IIRC. No secret alliances, everything else is the default. Hope that works for everyone.

Well, the Conquer Club game is well underway, I hope it's mostly Dopers, there's some names I don't recognize, but Y'all wouldn't know me as Zaphod23, either.

The Grand Strategy Game is also underway. I hope I didn't close these games out by starting my turn. The Conquer Club started without me, but in the GS game, I was first, I think.

Good Luck, everyone. If more Dopers want in, please start other games and post the forum and game number, eh?

GreedySmurf made it into my CC game, is Dexanthia a doper?

It seems you have to be a premium member to make a game private.

I am MaximumAt at the Conquer Club. I have never played Risk before and I think I really screwed up on my first turn.

Yep I made it into the Conquer club game.

But I couldn't get the Grand Strategy website to run properly for me, so I'll just keep myself to Conquer Club I think.

Eeeyeah. I've seen worse. You don't have the best position to play from. I got the Western U.S. back.

I'd join your game, if you let me know details, Shijinn. I'm knocked out of the Conquer Club game, already.

Grand Strategy is less intuitive, but not bad, once you get used to it.

I dunno, Ostro. I got emails from Conquer Club, GS you just have to check on periodically. Check your details? Can you log back in?

Multiple accounts are frowned on, Sijinn. Just sayin'.

ack, this is why we should go easy on newcomers. it didn't occur to me that that qualifies as creating a sock..

actually i've been considering ponying up on Conquer Club for some time. if we can fill a 6 player game i'll go ahead so we'll have a private game. so far we have

me
The Sonoran Lizard King

Oslo Ostragoth?
GreedySmurf?
Two and a Half Inches of Fun?

anyone else? time commitments are like a 5-10 minutes turn everyday.

That would be cool. I've got a good one going over at Grand Strategy. Only four players and I don't think any are dopers(sorry, guys). I've got most of Europe, and over half of N. America.

alright, we have five now. one more!

me
The Sonoran Lizard King
GreedySmurf
Oslo Ostragoth
Madd Maxx

while we wait for our sixth, these are my preferred settings. if there are any objections speak now before the game starts.
  • standard game - conquer the whole map to win
  • sequential turns
  • flat rate - because escalating is all about timing and luck imho.
  • adjacent fortifications - unlimited is cheap.
  • no fog of war

Sounds good. I have come to hate escalating cards.

If you haven't already done so Shijinn I've signed up for membership myself, so can start a private game as well.

I'm not sure how it works as I have played exactly one turn online and I haven't set up a game before. Can we set up a private game and get it on everyone's list and wait for a sixth Doper to join? I wouldn't be adversed to playing with 5 players either. I do love me some Risk though.

Ahhh, let's go ahead and start. Five sounds good. Hail Eris.

Have you started the game, yet?

*Discordians believe all things happen in patterns of five, or are somehow connected to the number five.*

This is always true, given enough ingenuity on the part of the observer.

I mean, of course, have you created the game yet. It seems you may have.

BRB.

Nope, couldn't find any familiar names at either site.

Anyrose, did you mean you've created accounts at both sites, or that you've joined games on the site, and are ready to play?

I'm sure someone will be along soon with game numbers.

the game automatically starts when all players are in, so you have to specify the number of players first.

meh. no australia for me this game.

anyrose, you wait for you turn after Madd Maxx's. games that you can play will have the red icon beside your name light up as green. after that all commands are issued under the 'Action' area through pull down lists. it should be quite straight forward.

and nice starting position in Siege, GreedySmurf!

I just checked www.zone.com but they don't seem to have Monopoly. I used to play chess there.

Hmmm. It seems I have no choice but to start a land war in Asia. I remember hearing that's a bad Idea. Oh yeah. It was that Sicilian I killed in a duel over who was, or wasn't an idiot.

It's Sonoran's turn - and still only round 1.

Last night I forked over the scratch to become a premium member; I've plaved 10 games so far and just won my first game. And I am currently involved in 17 games. But I'm not addicted. No, really, I'm not.

me first? huh huh could I? I am in a very weak position in this game. Fortunately, in another game, I seem to be holding on to Asia very tightly. Too bad I can't translate it here.

I tried some of the other boards, too. Canada plays well. World 2.1 takes too long. Doodle Earth is very silly. I also have a Space and a CCU (Conquor Club Univ.) game going on. But I learned my lesson this weekend. No more than one long game at a time. I di play a lot of Speed games, but that requires everyoe be present and accounted for since it is a five minute per turn game.
