Dope Global Domination Game [free browser-based strategy game]

This is a signup thread for the Dope Global Domination Game [DGDG for short?] that I’ll be running over at atWar-game.com. If you’ve never heard of atWar, it’s a free-to-play browser-based game (though there is a desktop client version if you’d prefer to install rather than play in your browser) that plays somewhat similarly to the board games Risk and Diplomacy, with everyone selecting starting nations and competing for global military dominance. Players prepare build and movement orders each turn which are then, when all the orders are in, resolved simultaneously. You can begin your tale of glorious victory or humiliating defeat anywhere - from Saudi Arabia to Poland, or Mexico, or Brazil, or Thailand, wherever you like.

In the DGDG each turn will last 24 hours and completing your turn takes only as long as you want it to - you can play things by ear and make all your moves each day in the space of two or three minutes or spend all day agonizing over your decisions. If everyone submits their turns early a new turn begins (with its own 24 hour timer) and the players are sent an email letting them know.

The game I’m organizing has 20 player slots, 4 of which are already spoken for. That leaves 16 openings for anyone who’d like to join (very action-packed games can be played with small numbers of players, but I’ve set the cap at 20 so that we can accommodate as many people as would possibly like to join). I’ll be creating the game at around 6pm EST on Thursday the 24th and from that point people will have a little under 24 hours to join and submit their first move.

This means you have until between 2 and 4pm EST on Friday the 25th to sign up.

If you’d like to join just hop on over to atwar-game.com and make a free account (be sure to supply an email when you do so you don’t miss new-turn updates!). Then let me know what your atWar username is and I’ll send you the password (I’m sending them to confirmed signups rather than just posting it so that we don’t have people joining with multiple accounts). The earlier you let me know, the better - if you wait until the 11th hour there might not be too much time between me sending out the password and the end of the game’s join window.

In the meantime there are quick games going on all the time at atwar-game.com if you wanted to check it out to get a feel for the mechanics of the game. If you have any questions or need any help let me know.

Also, if you’re feeling generous you can register for an account through this link and I’ll get a referral exp bonus on the site.

Or don’t! I will be your enemy, after all.

I’ll be playing in this game. It only took me about 15 minutes in the tutorial to lean how to play, and one practice game to learn the trickier concepts like how your orders are prioritized.

To see what the game looks like at a glance, here are some images from a quick game I played recently:

Sure - why not? I’m always up for a little world-domination game.

I’m game. heh. I’ve been intending to take over the world anyway, may as well start practicing.

Though it looks like slow going in here the player count is actually stacking up at a pretty reasonable rate. It’s looking like we’ll have about 9 or 10 players. We’re still accepting more, though!

The game is now live! Messages containing instructions as well as the entry password have been sent out to players.

People can play anywhere in the world, but countries sharing a land border with a country already selected by another player are off limits.

Once everyone has joined up I’ll be posting a player and country listing, as well as a link for spectators to follow if they’d like to watch the proceedings.

Important: To those of you who have been sent game links, please don’t share them publicly just yet. The password prevents people from joining through the lobby but people can still join by directly following the game link - once the first turn has wrapped up the playerlist will be locked and we can allow spectators at that point.

Sent out messed-up links to everyone. You should all have new messages now with the proper links and passwords. Sorry!

Though at the time of posting there’s still about an hour for someone to join before the game begins, this is likely the final roster.

Good luck, nations of the world!

Turn 1 was slow as expected, because of an inability to build. Some of the powers did grow, however: Troops crossed the North/South Korean border, taking Pyongyang, and the consolidation of Brazil began with soldiers marching through the streets of Curitiba.

With the nations of the world now able to recruit additional soldiers and begin constructing transports, Turn 2 is liable to be more eventful.

Sorry I missed this. I’ll get in on the next one.

How long do games normally take?

This is hopefully just the first in a series of planned matches. So you’ll get your chance to play with us.

Depends on the type of game. It’s possible to play short games set entirely in one region of the world, like the Mediterranean or the Middle East, with turns lasting only three or four minutes. Those kind of games tend to last around an hour. World games with short turns (again, about three or four minutes) will last a few hours. Long games like the one we’re playing will go on for around a month, with very drawn-out matches perhaps lasting two months.

Beware Brazil! We fired all our professional soccer players and gave them something they’re much more suited for. Tanks and guns!

You suckers have no chance.

South Korea is appealing the UN to administer an official warning for personal insults!

Turns 2 and 3 mark the beginning of serious expansion by most of the major powers of the world.

G0sp3l, in case you didn’t see it, I’ve sent a private message offering assistance with the game if you need it. Indonesia is the only nation that hasn’t expanded!

I’ve only now noticed that I’d forgotten to turn off alliances and peace treaties! I’ll try to make the change now but it will require a unanimous vote. If not we’ll just have to play with them on, meaning it’s possible for there to be more than one winner. Hopefully the vote passes.

In any case, all the nations of the world (sans Indonesia) continue to expand.

Everyone please ACCEPT the proposed game change that appears when you next log in to atWar.

I didn’t get a pop-up - should it appear in the game or as a message in the control panel?

If it didn’t appear at the start of this newest turn then something’s probably gone wrong and we might not be able to change the rule this game, which is unfortunate, but we’ll live. This has two consequences for the game:

1.) Games can now end in ties.
2.) People you’ve allied with get a turn’s notice when you attack them (because you have to first break the alliance).

Looking through the rules I see I’ve also only set the game for 50 turns, another mistake of sorts. Though that leaves plenty of game to play it means the game will likely end with a few people hanging on besides the winner. Apologies for the rules mix up: I’d made the game with all the proper rules but forgot to make it private and in my haste to correct the issue I overlooked the above-mentioned settings when remaking the game.

The next game we play won’t have these hiccups - I’m as new to this as you guys are!

The two North American factions have met and there’s no real telling which one’ll end up as the dominant force there. From my perspective things look tense in Europe, too, with all three factions there building up lots of troop walls as they scramble for unclaimed territory.

Indonesia’s been dropped from the game after three consecutive turns of inactivity. Its faction will be gone from the game next turn.
