From time to time we’ve had some enjoyable diplomacy games. Usually we can even throw together seven players fairly quickly (although I tend to get smashed pretty quickly)…
So I wanted to toss it out there - I’d be happy to run a Diplomacy game starting soon, and I was hoping that if we could get more than seven players, we might be able to try out the Modern variant for ten players: diplom.org
I suggest 2 turns a week, unless everyone thinks they would be pleased with a happier pace. Random draw for country assignment.
If you’re interested, just post your interest and whether you would be up for a faster pace than 2 turns/week.
I have no idea what Diplomacy (as in the game) is… but just reading that page immediately made me interested. It seems really cool.
If you could tell me how the game is played (or link me to rules) I’d love to play. I’m down for faster turns that 2 every week but I don’t think I’ll want to play if it’s any slower than that. You can rest assured that I won’t flake if we do this. You can check my track record in the Fighting Ignorants RPG thread!
The basics are a little like a mix of negotiations and chess (no chance involved in movement)…
In the web version, I won’t be playing, so everyone will PM their moves to me & I’ll post a map showing the results twice a week (I’ll be using an adjudicator called jDip - you can download it for free here http://jdip.sourceforge.net/ and check it out if you want to see how it works.) The rest of the time might be needed for negotiations with the other powers - that’s a critical part of the game.
Modern intrigues me-Standard has been played out, and I refuse to play another round on the that map unless it’s a mod like 1900 which fixes certain things. Lemme think about it (because this game has a bad tendency to keep me up nights scheming in bed for hours on end…).
If you guys are desperate to find players let me know. I like Dip but I find myself getting very distracted with it when the turns stretch out and the game winds down. Occasionally I find myself sending in orders at the last minute without ever exchanging an email and that sucks. Maybe it’s me or maybe I’ve had bad luck with “allies” around here, but none the less I’d be willing too give it another go if you need me. Don’t let me take up someone else’s space though.
This modern map is intriguing but I’m a little skeptical that it will feature some unbalanced play, the lack of impassible land seems particularly jarring to me as does the bottle necks in the Middle East.
Is there going to be a thread for us to have public negotiations in? Like “I’ll do _____ for anyone who gets Scuba Ben off my back”? And I’m assuming private negotiations between players are allowed, too?
We’d be happy to have you, Omniscient - let’s see how many people are interested?
I’d been hoping to use jDip - and as far as I can tell, it doesn’t support that variant. We could do Ancient Mediterranean, Asia, Aberration V, Hundred Years’ War, Loeb9, or Renaissance…
How about if we tentatively include you, and see what variants we can match with the number of players who have volunteered by Saturday - would that be an OK option?
So far it looks like:
Scuba_Ben
AClockworkMelon
Potentially:
3. etv78
4. JohnDiFool
5. Omniscient
… and it sounds like people could do faster than 2 turns/week… How about Saturday I’ll check in with folks about a faster pace. ACM - yeah, we’ll do a thread for public press, and PMing privately for negotiations and betrayals will be allowed. We’ll also have a second thread for non-players to kibbitz and comment.
After reading the rules it seems like two turns a week might be perfect. A year a week. Otherwise we might not have time to properly form plans with one another considering how long it might take to get back with one another’s messages. Unless we trade IM addresses or whatever.
The last Doper Dip game I recall, it was entirely public negotiations. Having no privacy must have made that game more complex than Dip normally is.
As for AClockworkMelon’s example, I’ll have two of the complementary daggers please.
On schedule, I’m fine with one game year per week, although I am not available Friday afternoon through Saturday night. I’m open to suggestions on how I can accommodate a Dip game with my timing restriction.
