How can I find out who won the Nintendo Power Final Fantasy contest from '89'ish?

I remember Nintendo Power running this awesome Final Fantasy tie-in contest back when the first game came out over here - the winner would actually get sent to an island and go on a hunt for a buried treasure, get a crystal ball, and everything. It seemed like the ultimate cool contest that Nintendo ever ran, and they had a ton of weird and cool contests during that era.

Is there any way for me to find out anything about the actual outcome and what the prize was like?

If I remember correctly, they published the winner's name and picture of that particular contest. I don't have them with me here now, but I bet you can find them archived on the internet somewhere. Find that issue, look up the name, and give the guy a call?
