This week, YouTube announced the winners of its 2nd Annual YouTube Awards, honoring the best in original videos posted to YouTube. Who joins OK Go, Ask a Ninja, and that suicidal kiwi in YouTube’s cream of the crop?
Some of my thoughts: Comedy: The Mysterious Ticking Noise is a very funny video and I’m glad it won (ever since seeing it, I often shout “Dumbledore!” to myself at unusual times), but Game Over is a hilarious video, and I don’t know if it should have won over Snape, Snape, Severus Snape. Snape, Snape, Severus Snape. Snape, Snape, Severus Snape. Dumbledore! Okay, maybe a catchy song does have something going for it. PowerThirst is also very funny, and was so succesful the filmmaker did two others: a follow-up and a spoof for the makers of Brawndo energy drink.
Creative: This is the hardest category for me. Human TETRIS is a great video and deserves its award, but there are some other great ones: What Song Is This is amazing, and so is MS PAINT MONA LISA.
Music: Chocolate Rain. One of the strangest and catchiest songs ever written. Now this one I agree with. (**I move away from the mic to breathe in)
For some reason I’m irked at the win by What the Buck? (Commentary award winner for LonelyGirl15 is dead). I started watching Michael Buckley (who wants to be famous sooooooooooo bad) when he was doing American Idol recaps last year and I thought he was absolutely hysterical, but for some reason he went from screamingly funny to “obnoxiously annoying as all hell” in a very short period even though there was no change in his material. I don’t know if it’s his attempts at singing, the total vapidity of his webcasts, or the obviously scripted material, or the affected gay bitchiness, or what else exactly, but for me he didn’t so much jump the shark as fall into the tank.
Of course that’s a personal review, ymmv. For me I think it’s a case of an occasional chocolate doughnut is great but eating a dozen of them makes you sick and bloated.
I didn’t really find that funny. Amusing, yes, but nothing in comparison to Powerthirst or the David Blaine spoof. Maybe if the girl cried or something…
As for Chocolate Rain…BLECH! I don’t think you could get less creative musically. Oh wait. Apparently, you can. Watch his next video. I’m not much on beatboxing, but I thought even the harmonica/human beatbox vid was more appealing. At least he could play the harp pretty well.
I must have lost my sense of humor because I didn’t find Potter Pals all that funny. I thought Powerthirst should have taken it, but then I enjoy parody. MENERGY!!
David Blaine street magic definitely should’ve won comedy. I suffered through that Mario: Game Over and didn’t even crack a smile. It was painfully unfunny, unoriginal, and unentertaining. It was also about 3 minutes too long. DBSM is not just funny, it’s good filmmaking.
Ugh. That David Blaine one is painful to watch. The whiny gay affectations are like nails on a chalkboard. Could it possibly be any longer and less interesting? I think you guys are nuts. Apparently you like 5 minutes of loud high pitched whining in your comedy.
All the sports ones are awfully impressive. I liked the winner, but I thought the 66 inch vertical leap was the most impressive.
The creative ones were pretty cool, though the morphing ones were pretty lame attempts, and I think the guy who sang the Star Spangled Banner backwards should have won. The etch-a-sketch LeBron in sports probably belonged in this category.
The Laughing Baby was pretty cute but it was nothing compared to the Otters holding hands for me.
