Drinking (of the alcohol variety)

I am only 23 and apart from the odd sip here and there i have never drunk alcohol. I have no desire to at all, I really hate the smell of all drink and hate what i have tasted even more. I always thought it was a taste i would acquire as an adult, although now i don’t think i ever will. And of course have never been drunk on purpose. To me it seems like an expensive way to have fun/relax/escape reality, and one that leaves you feeling rubbish the next day.

My friends, and family, do drink a lot, although I never particularly want to join in and they are very respectful of that.

So my choice to not drink is not because of health/religious/addiction/money reasons-its simply because i don’t want to.

Do you drink-if so why? If you don’t-why not?

I haven’t picked up an alcoholic drink in over 18 years. I’m 50, BTW.

That’s because I’m a recovering alcoholic. Back when I did pick up a drink, I never was quite sure what would happen, or when I’d be able to stop. As a result, drining wasn’t fun anymore.

That’s why I don’t drink now. The downside had become far, far greater than any residual benefit from alcohol.

I don’t, for the same reasons as you.

I do, on occasion. Because it’s fun, I enjoy it, and it has no negative consequences for me.

Like Priceguy, I drink because it’s fun and I enjoy it. I like the feeling of being mildly to moderately intoxicated. I do need to be careful though. At times I drink to excess or for unhealthy reasons, so I’m careful to watch that I don’t slip into alcoholism. Of course, whether one can ‘slip into’ alcoholism or whether one is always an alcoholic is a matter of huge debate. For what it’s worth I’m 24 and just graduated from college.

I’m almost 28. On the nights that I drink at all, I tend to have 3+ drinks. I like to be moderately drunk, especially with other people who are moderately drunk. I generally get that way once a week.

I prefer, by the way, to drink either beer, or gin & tonic. The results of both seem to be the same for me. I’m not mean either way

The vast majority of my drinking consists of a single drink (usually a beer) with dinner. I often don’t even finish it. I like the taste. This isn’t enough alcohol to produce any noticeable CNS depression.

You just graduated? Congratulations.

I also never liked drink. I would drink when others were passing around drinks, just to sip, but never bought any. This would make my friends nuts, as they expected me to provide drinks when I hosted as they had when they hosted. But I reminded them that when given a choice I always drank soda. Anyway, now that we are all in our nineties and hundreds, we only use alcohol for medicinal purposes. Gargle for sore throats, etc.

Not much any more. It conflicts with almost all of my meds. Sometimes I really, really miss relaxing with a glass of good wine at dinner, or that exquisitely lovely thing that is single malt Scotch. A well-made Bombay sapphire gin martini, straight up, with an olive. That cool, refreshing beer on a hot afternoon. A sunny, fruity rum punch. Any and all accompanied by that nice sweet buzz. Unfortunately, now, even one or two will have me feeling like crap the following day. Two days in a row and the third day I remember why I’m taking the meds to begin with.

I don’t really understand how someone can dislike *all * alcoholic drinks, since they are so varied, but I would never, ever try to tell someone else what to drink. To each his own.

I drink moderately (5-7 drinks per week). Last night I had three glasses of wine - which is the maximum I’ll have in one evening. I probably won’t have another drink for several days, possibly for the rest of the week.

I like the taste, but then I only drink things that I enjoy.

Getting drunk is something I’ve grown out of, though it seemed like fun at the time. My whole family and most of my friends would be moderate or non-drinkers.

I love to drink. In general, I drink el-cheapo vodka, whatever is cheapest. It tastes terrible. Most hard liquor, IMHO, tastes terrible. Most wine, to me, tastes terrible. I have had mixed drinks that taste wonderful, though.

Though I’ve never developed a taste for liquor (that is, I drink it DESPITE the taste), I have grown to love the tastes of beer and coffee, two liquids that I despised as a youngster.

What alcoholic drinks I drink because I like the taste. In some cases these are extremely strong flavors (single malt scotch, for example) but hey, some people like to eat hot peppers, which can be equally strong and a flavor many find very unpleasant.

I find the buzz I get after 1 drink to be relaxing and enjoyable. After two it stops being so fun, and beyond that forget about it. Unless you’re talking about a 6 hour party with food served 1 drink in a day is usually plenty for me, and it’s been decades since I went past 2 in 24 hours. Like Ruken I sometimes don’t bother to finish a drink. Sometimes I get halfway or 3/4 through a beer or glass of wine and that’s enough, I don’t want any more.

Right now I have a drink somewhere between once a week and once every two weeks. I don’t drink before work. I don’t drink and drive. Let me clarify that - I do not have even one sip prior to getting behind the wheel of a car. When I can afford to fly I’ll have a single drink maybe once every three or four months because it is not compatible with that hobby, which I’d much rather spend my time and money on than alcohol. I’ve gone a year or two without alcohol sometimes because… well, because I don’t need it and there where other things to spend my time and money on and I just didn’t feel an urge or craving for it.

I drink because I like the buzz. I have cut way down on my consumption, though, because I’ve had some pretty serious knee problems, accompanied but two surgeries over the winter and copious amounts of vicodin. If I drink alcohol within a couple days of taking vicodin it makes me really lethargic and I end up falling asleep at 8 pm. One of the effects of the vicodin is a buzz not too much different from the effects of drinking a few beers, though, so I haven’t missed it (alcohol) much. But I’ll definitely miss the vicodin when it’s gone.

Drinking makes me really lethargic, too, and dizzy and nauseous. I never have more than 3 drinks over several hours, and I must have food with it. I’ve wondered if I have a small allergy to alcohol, because I also get very stuffy in the nose and get headaches when drinking. I figure if everybody felt as bad from drinking as I do, there wouldn’t be nearly as much consumption in the world. I’m 39, female, and have an extremely sensitive CNS.

I enjoy the taste, I’d prefer to have a beer or two instead of guzzling a bit of junk food and washing it down with a coke.

I like the taste and I enjoy the buzz. I avoid getting downright drunk, however, because my body does not recuperate like it used to when I was a young thang. So, a drink - two at the most, and I’m done.

I do loves me some Smirnoff Triple Distilled Vodka. Vodka collins, martinis (especially Pom-tinis), and White Russians are my faves - very tasty! I also have a fondness for locally grown wine.

ETA: I turned 40 in April - just as an FYI.

I drink in social situations when others are drinking, if I need to get up for work or something the next morning or something, I’ll usually limit myself to 4-6 drinks over the course of a night (I’m a big boy, though.) If I don’t have anything pressing the next day I’ll just switch to water or diet coke when I feel like I’ve had enough, which may be in the 10 drink range.

I usually have a glass of wine most days, but never enough to give me a buzz. I will, on occasion, get ripped on mixed drinks with my friends. Not as much since I’ve entered my thirties.

One of the things that the SDMB has illustrated is the correlation between drinking and monkey butlers. Where’s Homer when you need him?
