Choir tour to the UK in 2010

I’m quite excited. My choir’s trip to the UK in August 2010 has been confirmed. Details on the exact schedule are still a bit hazy, but at the moment there are suggestions of two large scale performances at major venues in London. It sounds like one will be at the Albert Hall during the Proms. The Festival Hall has also been mentioned. There’s talk too of a couple of concerts in other places like Bath and Oxford.

It should all be great fun.

Good stuff! If your looking at being part of the Proms you’re doing well. What’s the name of your choir?

That is very, very cool. And I’m very, very jealous…

Sydney Philharmonia Choir. We sang Mahler 8 at the Proms in 2002 in a joint effort with two English choirs (one from London and one from Birmingham).

Great news! Do keep us posted

Incidentally, I was watching a prom this evening. Mahler 8 is unquestionably better-suited to the Albert Hall than the Stravinsky violin concerto proved to be!

It’s a shame they’re not looking at any concerts further north, not least because the best large concert halls are to be found outside of London.

Yes, that would be nice.

In 2002 we performed the *Mahler 8 * in Birmingham too as a quid pro quo for the Birmingham choir, who came to Sydney in 2000 to perform it with us for the Olympics.

Quick, get in there with your arrangements for 2012!!!

That would be lovely, but two trips to the UK in two years would be a bit much. London is so hellishly expensive.

So possible excuse for a LonDopefest, perchance? (I missed the last one.)

Some more details have emerged:

We will be performing at the opening concert of the Proms: Mahler 8 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under the baton of their chief conductor Jiří Bělohlávek. This concert will take place on Friday 16 July 2010 at the Royal Albert Hall.

It will be a real buzz to sing at the opening night of the Proms! It’s just a pity that’s it’s Mahler 8 again. It’s a fantastic work, and I love it, but we did it at the Proms in 2002 and it would have been nice to do something else.

We will also be performing a concert with the Crouch End Festival Chorus at either the Barbican or the Festival Hall. The program will include several Australian works, as well as a new work by the English composer Tarik O’Regan. Is anyone familar with his music?
