Meh. Seems to me like he is admitting he is lacking in foreign policy experience & running to the “establishment” for support in that area with this choice.
After reading more I think Biden’s senate foreign policy experience, and overall Washington acumen will reign in a lot of former Clintonites and working class folk to Obama’s side. As this team strengthens I can see a solid old school/new school approach kicking off to the elections in 2 months.
Absolutely, who will McCain choose? Undoubtedly someone who picks up where he lacks… Isn’t this what all Presidential candidates do, if memory serves?
Well, I was hoping for Sam Nunn. And, I’d like to strap Biden into a chair and ask him about that bankruptcy bill he voted for that was such a gift to the credit card companies. But, this could be a winning ticket.
With all of his faults, he’s a good attack dog, and evens out the ticket. Let Biden wade into the muddy waters as Obama stays where he will do the best job, on top.
I like this pick, Biden will bring the foreign policy experience and the “won’t take shit from anyone” attitude that counters Obama’s weaknesses. Biden will appeal to the folks who think Obama is weak in these areas.
At least now Obama has a clear path to victory, had Clinton been chosen, he would have had no path…18million cracks or not…many of those[the majority] already went to Obama, this choice will pick up a lot more.
Just looked over Biden’s wiki page and not much ammo there for the Republicans. His kid being in Amtrak might come up. His quote that “If I could wave a wand, and the Lord said I could solve one problem, I would solve the energy crisis” may be juicy. Is he a good Catholic? Any zipper rumors?
Of course the VP choice really matters very little. But.
The horse race issues have been covered. To that I’ll only add that Biden hardly reinforces the Change narrative. Obama needs those excited by that narrative to come out. Is he taking those newer voters a bit for granted?
Biden will be a useful figure within the White House. He does know how to get things done and he has been good at working in bipartisan ways. He has a solid knowledge base to bring and will speak his mind in meetings. Bluntly. In terms of actually serving and being ready to become President - he’s a fine choice.
65? Assume an Obama-Biden victory and another term. The sitting VP to possibly run would be 73? I think not.
Negative ads? Yeah, Biden opens more up with things he’s said about Obama before, he’s not ready etc. But then Bush Sr.'s voodoo economics comments had never hurt Reagen much. That stuff won’t stick much.
The McCain team already has their line of attack warmed up : McCain’s Blog Response
Isn’t Biden a good choice for quelling any swiftboating?
I’m close to this. I like Biden okay except for that bankruptcy thing. Doesn’t one son work for Bank of America? I understand the balance but the longer the campaign wears on and I see the kind of crap unitelligent ads they’re running I see Obama as getter closer to the same ole crap. I still think he’s the better choice. It just means we have to be more vocal in pushing changes.
Oh, did he do that? Well, I bet the fact that MBNA’s home office being in Delaware has a lot to do with it. MBNA has this powerful strongarming lobbying syndicate.
I’m pleased with an Obama/Biden ticket…
Biden’s a Roman Catholic too, so it’s all good.
I am lukewarm on the choice. Biden obviously is not going to drive off any democrat voters.
But is he going to sway the conservative on the fence? I don’t think so. There is enough low hanging (stupid) fruit to keep Rush Limbaugh in radio skits for months.
He plagiarised!!
He is pompous!!
He thinks he is smarter than you!!
You know, the kind of red meat blather that keeps conservative pundits from actually addressing the issues.
So, a net-neutral form me.
Yes - I do think he is much more likely to give a hearty “Fuck you, that’s a lie” to swiftboaters than Obama.
My concern as well. He is awfully beholden to MBNA.
On the other hand, I imagine he will be an agressive campaigner, and a good attack dog when that is needed. While I like Nunn, he could not have filled that role.
It’s a reasonably good, safe choice. If he could’ve made the Clinton deal work, that would’ve been best, but there’s just too much baggage there. Biden is pretty good debater, so McCain better pick someone who can stand up to him. Not sure how Biden represents “change”, but hey, you can’t have everything!
A Muslim and a Catholic in the White House! What’s America coming to?
I got a question: on CNN it said that Biden ran for the candidacy in 1988 as well but pulled out of the race amidst accusations of plagiarism. What’s up with that, and might it still have an effect now, 20 years later?
Ouch. No doubt they’ve been sitting on that for months.
He was damned if he did, damned if he didn’t in this arena. If Obama chose someone as new and fresh as himself, he would have been accused not only of inexperience but arrogance. The fact is, Biden’s foreign policy knowledge considerably dwarf’s McCain’s - the latter isn’t really one of the big foreign policy wonks in the Senate, no matter how he tries to make it sound.
Obama is still going to be in charge. I can’t imagine anyone who has seen the man thus far imagining any different. He’s smart enough to know he can’t be an expert on everything, and secure enough to bring in someone who obviously knows more in this area than he does, just as he is secure enough in his masculinity and his marriage to have no problem allowing others to have same sex civil unions without feeling his own marriage to be threatened. (I get the sense that he would like to replace all legal marriages with civil unions, and leave ‘marriages’ to churches, but that’s just my WAG)
I think Biden is an excellent choice. Sure, in a 35 year plus record in the Senate, there are going to be votes he made that you don’t agree with. Nonetheless, he has solid liberal Democratic credentials, without being soft on national security, he’ll be an outstanding attack dog for the Obama campaign (better than anyone on the horizon with the possible exception of HRC), he’s older but, but in a very attractive way, he appeals across the board to blue and white collar voters, and he has a good following in PA. I would have liked Richardson, but I’m not sure how good an attack dog he would have made, so I’m happy with what we have now.
Plus Obama/Biden looks OK on a bumper sticker, and not like a Harry Potter villain or a nasty bacterium.
