In Memory of jsgoddess's husband...

Recently one of our fellow Dopers, jsgoddess, shared with us that her husband died, quite unexpectedly at the early age of 48.

There continues to be a great outpouring of sympathy for Julie and her husband, Steve. I know that Dopers are a very sympathetic bunch and often wish they could do more when tragedy like this strikes one of our members. Sometimes it’s hard because this is an international community, so it’s not like we can be there in person to help.

Here’s a post she made all about Steve and what a wonderful guy he was. As she says, the two of them met online, which means that even though he wasn’t a member here he surely would appreciate the sort of feelings we all have towards each other.

Julie has been a member since 2003, and I think she’s as prolific a poster as many others here. She always stands out to me as a great friend to have around in baseball threads, as she and her husband have always been staunch Indians fans (like me).

I would like to take this opportunity to do something special for Julie and Steve, to show how much we all care. There is a program through the Cleveland Indians where you can purchase a brick paver to be installed in Heritage Park inside Progressive Field. Heritage Park is an area beyond the center field fence that is a great tribute to both great Indians players AND fans. I think it would be nice for Julie to be able to remember Steve in this way, and a way for Julie to be able to continue to enjoy games knowing Steve is “there” too.

The pavers and the park are very nice. My family purchased one for my dad upon his retirement. Julie will also get a replica copy of the paver to have at home. And, of course, she’ll be able to choose the inscription.

I’ll be taking the donations via PayPal, or if you want, send a check. Unfortunately my PayPal address is my real name so I’m going to have to ask you to PM me for the information (also if you want my address). Any extra money will be donated to a charity of Julie’s choice, in Steve’s name.

The sooner we can collect money, the better chance we have of the brick being installed by Opening Day (April 10).

I’ve cleared this idea with both Julie and the mods, and I’ll be letting her know who sends their love. Please feel free to leave more comments of support in this thread, too.

Thank you in advance…you guys are a wonderful bunch

I’m in. PM’ing you in a moment.

I’ve got to wait for my paycheck for the end of the month, but I’m definitely in. How much would such a thing cost, aproximately?

There’s a link to the website in the OP’s post.

Me too

You guys are awesome! Everyone has been so generous so far

Gukumatz - the paver is $300 or $375, depending on which design Julie wants. The more expensive one has an Indians logo but less lines of text.

In case anyone is wondering, I’ll be covering the PayPal transaction fees myself so no one’s donation gets “reduced” because they paid via credit card or non-USD currency. So please feel free to use whatever method is easiest for you.

PM sent. Thank you for getting this together for us. I’ve been thinking of her a lot these last few days.

Mod Note: sticking this thread.

Thanks for doing this. PM sent.

Great idea. I’m in!

Thanks again, everyone. With your help we’ve raised enough for the paver and will have plenty extra to donate to Steve’s favorite charity, Forgotten-4-paws.

I’m still collecting, so please let me know if you’d like to give.

Julie says that help with the inscription is welcomed. The brick we’re ordering allows for 4 lines of 15 characters. Her husband’s full name is Steve Carter, if anyone wants to post or PM a suggestion.

Oh, man, that is AWESOME. I’m so amazed at the generosity here. (I donated, too).
