As some of you may know, Polycarp and his wife, Skulldigger, have been real life friends of ours now for several years. I just spoke with him by phone to check up on their condition which, a couple weeks ago, was quite dire.
Several things hit them all at once. A tree fell, bursting the water pipe that led from their landlady’s water connection to their home. And so they had to carry water from her house in buckets. Poly is essentially disabled, and Skull’s hours were cut back severely. They could no longer afford their electricity bill (or their ISP charges for that matter), and their electricity was cut off. They were cooking on cans of sterno. To top it all off, the water pump went out on their car, and the landlady, due to the condition of their home, was being forced by ordinance basically to evict them.
We offered at that time to come to their home immediately, and bring them down here to live with us rent free for as long as they needed to recover. (They’re about, oh, 150 miles away or so.) But Skull loves her job and believes it will pick up soon.
Fastforward.
They are now living with a friend very close to their old place. Poly has a special gift and much experience in molding young men, and so the friend is using his services to help with her rather wayward young son. In any case, without writing a novel about all the details, suffice it to say that things are looking very good for them now. They are able to begin saving some money, and they will soon be able to fix their car.
So anyway, Poly asked me to share this with all of you. He sends his love and respect. He says that they will have DSL service within the next week or so, and he’ll be back. Until then, in case you had wondered why he was posting only here and there (they had an extenstion cord from their landlady’s house to theirs, which they had to use for everything — the computer was a low priority), he’ll be back very soon.
If soundness of mind, intellect and character were indicative of a person’s wealth than I would have rightly surmised that Polycarp was a multimillionaire several times over. He’s certainly one of the richest guys I’ve ever read in any number of ways.
Sorry about the streak of bad there, Poly, but so glad to hear everything’s on the mend. If you’ll allow us to help in some way I’m sure more than a few of us would be honored to have the opportunity.
Best of luck, pal, and hope to see you here again soon.
Thanks to you too, Liberal, for keeping us in the loop.
My god, that’s terrible- they’ll have DSL service??!?
Polycarp’s one of the most loved and respected posters here for damn good reason and I’m sorry they’re going through all of this. I hope all of this starts to get resolved soon and that he’ll find the time to check in with us now and then.
Poly already knows if he asks for help, we’ll jump in to provide it, but please reiterate that to him, Lib. I know, he won’t accept it anyway, but that won’t stop me from trying.
We’re looking forward to seeing him back on here soon!
