Thar she blows! [Mt. Redoubt erupts]

Mt. Redoubt has blown her top again. We probably won’t get ash here on the island, thankfully.

A much better link.

Ooh, good link, thanks. My husband used to go to Soldotna with his father for salmon fishing, and having majored in geology I’m sure he’ll find this interesting!

Waiting for daylight to see if anything’s visible on the webcams. I checked AVO’s Redoubt page last night just before I went to bed and had noticed that seismic activity was up again. That was about three hours before it erupted, apparently.

Woke up this morning to news that Mt. Redoubt started erupting last night sometime. It’s been belching and farting for quite some time now, but it’s status was reduced from orange to yellow recently. Then suddenly BOOM, apparently.

So far, ash fall predictions are west of us, and I hope it stays that way. Ash can be a major problem for almost everything and everyone.

Ok, I know my first response should be “I hope you and yours are safe.”

But, in reality, my first response is “COOL!”

Oh — I DO hope you and yours are safe.

(I love volcanos.)

GOD DAMNIT!!
I was suppose to go home today.

Fucking volcano had to go off on the last day of my hitch and now I am stuck in the fucking artic tundra on the mutherfuckingoilfiled during one of the worst work weeks of my life.

Flights probally canceld for who knows how long. I am on support services and get almost lowest priority for seating once flights resume.

I do not think I have ever wanted to go home so badly in my life. And this happeend.
Oh well at least I am still gettting payed.

kaiwik beat you to it - with a very similar thread title.

Threads merged.

:: picks up tinkertoys and goes to room to sulk::

Aww Chefguy, don’t sulk just because I had a bad case of insomnia and was chatting online with a friend whose father is a Coastie and heard it on his radio as it was happening. I told her, I never get to scoop anything interesting, so it was just my turn.

fifty-six I’m sorry about the flight cancellations. It’s a difficult thing to try and travel around this state. I have frequently been “Waterbound” in Anchorage when Kodiak is either blowing or socked in, or the other way around trying to get off island, and it’s frustrating as hell. At least you are getting paid and have a bunk, these are good things!

Alaska Airlines is currently flying routes going south but not north- does that help?

It helps in the fact that someone cares.

No I am forced to fly on Shared Services Aviation on this particular hitch. Alaska Air does operate up here and sometimes I we take them. but not this hitch. It depends on the contract.

Shared Services Aviation SSA Is an oil company owned airlines. Jointly owned by BP and Conoco Philllips. They canceled all flights. And I am on the north slope on the artic ocean. Far north alaska. The ash cloud is directly blocking the flight path I belive. It could be days I suppose.

I really wish I could see the damn thing I may get a good view when I fly back home.

OK well I am gonna go have some dinner and wash it down with a glass of bleach.

Hey man, I understand. My brother takes contracts in the Middle East- tell me more about “Oops, sorry dude, no flight today… maybe next week?” that I haven’t heard before.

Skip the bleach and get home in the next day or two.

You got that right. I used to have to fly out to the coast to lovely places like Cape Romanzof, Cape Newenham, Tin City and the like. Odds were that you either weren’t going to get there, or you weren’t going to make it out on schedule. I got trapped for three days at Romanzof by one of those 100 mph+ coastal storms that are so common up here. In the winter, they’ve gone for weeks on end without resupply flights at those radar sites.

Yes I have been stuck in many strage places in this state. The air port over night seems to be expected.

One time I got stuck at St Paul Island in November for 7 days.Several with just us and the Time Bandit in the harbor. I got to know the wonderfull people there though and I tell you what they are an intresting group I could talk about the kids alone for days.

And speeking of the Pribilioffs I love the crazy diversions.

St.Paul and St. George are two isolated Isands in the Bering Sea. That with one or two more very small islands are collectivly called the Pribiloffs. When working on the Tiglax a Fish and Wildlife boat that often finds its way there the common story would always pop up about flying from one isalnd to the other. It probally takes about 20 min on a single prop at most. And get this, people often end up in Anchorage because either the weather deteriorates to fast or fog comes in to fast .

Take a loook on a map and see that crazy all to common diversion.

Yes I have ben al over the state as well and I am use to it mostly. But this weeks was really bad I really wanted to go home. I have been counting down the days.
I did skip the bleach

Another Major Eruption
I finally made it home barely. My Anchorage to Homer Flight had to be turned around due to bad weather and we upgraded to a larger plane later than night.

Now that I am finally here. Redoubt goes off again and the 65,000 ft ash cloud is headed directly for us. Should be here in less than 4 hours from what i just heard at the coffee shop. I will start looking onto it more now.

I think the schools are gonna close.

Side note: The co-captains of the Time Bandit are in Chicago today! They were on the morning news, local NBC affiliate, talking about their book. I’m thinking they’re happy to be here rather than (potentially) having to deal with ash.

How come there is snow if Alaska is south of Hawaii on all the maps?

/i keed.

Oh… I got some stories to tell about them. The boat is from Homer.

I spent some time on that boat in St. Paul with some of the locals it was a little surreal. We had a film crew too making a drama along with them and the locals. The only two boats in harbor.

And I saw some really interesting behind the scene footage in Dutch Harbor
Side note. 90% of what they say is considered bullshit by the people in the know. It is based on truth but really stretched. The truth is cooler I think but not suitable for on air broadcast.

The Movie I made was “Forget Me Not”. To be released in London On Valentines Day and the US soon after. I play Nick.
