RO: Converting a Hindu to Christianity

First off, since I am an atheist it doesn’t offend me so much, hence the RO.
But still the way these girls try browbeating the poor girl is pretty sickening.
I think “Sara” carried herself pretty well and kept her cool.

The introduction is the part that irked me the most. Indians ARE Asian, even if it doesn’t fit the stupid American stereotype.

I have my doubts that this is faked, but whatever…
I guess it would be nice to hear the dopers take on this video.

I think the Africa/Asia part is a giveaway. It’s a joke.

Please, dear God, let it be a joke!

I would say “one Indian friend and one regular friend” was the tip off.

Grade A trolling right there. Loved it.

Man, that was hilarious! I like how Saraa cranks up her accent.

But, yeah, it’s fake.

And when Saraa says, “I’m going to go eat rice now.” Haaa!

Can’t watch the video, but the very first girl annoyed me - the camera’s practically up her nose!

Is it faked? Anyone want to give a synopsis of the video?

Tho I do remember Christians ripping into my God and beliefs pretty good when I was younger.

Mika, I can’t see the video either, but when I watched it last night, (I think I clicked the link from Fark) it looked like a bit of ingenius trolling.

Two young white girls try to convince an Indian girl to give up her Hindu religion for Christianity. The two white girls come off as extremely ignorant and insensitive. I think it is brilliant that the young girls in this video are capable of this level of satire.

Can’t see the video from work, so I’m not sure exactly what you’re responding to, but you’re wrong about Indians being Asian, at least in the 20th-century-view-of-race sense. They’re Caucasian. (If you’re talking about a locality sense, they are Asian in the sense that they come from the continent of Asia.)

That is what makes me think it might be real. Everyone knows that teenage girls can be the most evil force on the planet. Everyone has met dumb and opinionated teenage girls.

Occums razor tells me it’s real.

Yeah, yeah, Bhagat Singh Thind and all that. But, to the extent that modern Americans (and others) generally don’t think of Indians as Caucasian, there’s not much point arguing that they somehow nonetheless actually are Caucasian in an underlying sense, as though these were very concrete groupings beyond the level of largely subjective impressions only marginally tracking genealogical relations. Indeed, there’s not much point trying to use “Caucasian” as anything separate from “white/European” in modern parlance.

I don’t disagree–I was simply objecting to “Indians are Asians (in the 20th-century-racial-sense),” because they’re not (no epicanthic fold, e.g.).

Ah, alright.

Sadly, it’s true. Just like liberal in the US has come to mean bleeding heart socialist. How the hell that happened is both complicated and bewildering.

The way I see it Asian isn’t a race, it refers to people from Asia.
I look as much “Asian”, as I look Caucasian(meaning, neither!)

But yeah, I do see your point.
Although, I haven’t seen a non-American use “Asian” in that way yet, in my personal experience.

Having never talked with American teenage girls, I cant really say if they are trolling, but I am almost sure that they are when I saw the video again. I hope I am right.

:frowning: No one ever tries to convert me to Hinduism  :pout:

Their gods are way cooler!

Well, in Molly’s details re that video;

Pretty cool satire. The comment section is filled with the most lame earnest posts.

Edited to add: It deserves better than 1 and a half stars.

That’s as fake as a three dollar bill. The actors were as wooden as a tree, the dialogue was preposterous.

The acting gets a little bit better later on, and they edit it well. But the first two minutes it’s just ludicrously obvious they’re faking it.

Have some friends from SA with the surname “Thomas.” Apparently some of my parishoners are unfamiliar with some of the stories associated with St Thomas because the asked how, being Indian, they would have such a name. I did not say, “Ladies, their family was probably Christian a thousand years before your family stopped worshiping Wotan,” and kept it down to a short history lesson.

They’re trolling. If you look at YouLoveMolly’s YouTube profile you’ll notice that all her stuff is “comedy”, and it says she and her friend need to practice their jokes before college. (:dubious:)

There’s no point. One of the basic tenets of Hinduism is that all faiths are reflections of the same basic truths (be nice to other people, look after your parents, don’t steal, lie, cheat, etc.) So you’re already a Hindu.

That’s all well and good, but you try telling that to my mother (“No, you see, it’s not important to believe the stories or even in any sort of god, as long as you’re a nice person… Why, as far as basic Hindu tenets are concerned, I haven’t really left the faith at all!”).
