5 acts get inducted.

I think the sure bets are The Stooges, Jimmy Cliff, and LL Cool J

I'd like to see Genesis get the nod. I doubt it, though.

The Chili Peppers - Good band but their songwriting isn't exactly stellar

Kiss, not enough substance. Unless they give out the induction for marketing.

Donna Summer, disco icon, maybe.

The Chantels, I've heard of them, I don't know.

Darlene Love, Sidemen category, maybe (if that's how it works)

Laura Nyro, odds are good

ABBA, doubt it.

So I'll predict The Stooges, Jimmy Cliff, LL Cool J, Laura Nyro, and Donna Summer for the 5 and will have my fingers crossed for Genesis. Who would you like to see get in? Who do you think will get in?

I thought KISS was already in. If not, then they belong there, along with Genesis and The Hollies. Not seeing much else on the list that would get my vote.

My votes would go to KISS, Genesis, The Stooges, ABBA...and it's a toss-up between The Hollies and Jimmy Cliff.

And yeah, I'd vote for Todd over anyone on the list.

Which version of Genesis? The progressive rock band of the 70s fronted by Peter Gabriel? The top-40 hitmakers of the 80s fronted by Phil Collins? I'm surprised that he wasn't nominated. He just played two concerts in Akron, a full production of his classic album A Wizard/A True Star The Hall of Fame had a Todd exhibit and autograph session that some 400 fans (in town for the concert) attended.

If Laura Nyro gets voted in, I'll bet that Todd will get asked to induct her. His early albums (Runt and The Ballad of Todd Rundgren) were deeply influenced by her, to the point of writing a song about her (Baby Let's Swing).

Probably not. They sold a metric crapload of pop records. Generally speaking, that isn't enough to get in. If they were seen as being influential to later artists, or holding an irreplaceable spot in rock history, it'd be different, but I wouldn't be surprised if most of the Hall's voters see ABBA as a guilty pleasure, and a favorite of karaoke singers, at best.

Genesis's first "version" (the prog-rockers) would seem to me to be what would merit inclusion...but, as has been discussed in earlier threads here, the Hall voters don't generally care for progressive rock (witness the difficulty that bands like Yes, Rush, ELO, etc. have had getting even getting to the nominee list).

Wow, wrong. Whether you like them or not, ABBA was--and remains--HUGELY influential, and whatever "hold an irreplaceable spot in rock history" means (I'm guessing it has something to do with qualities of uniqueness and, again, influence?), then yeah, in spades.

I would give a dollar to anyone who knows more than one song by the Chantels, though apparently they had several hits. "Maybe" is often considered the first "girl-group" record & it's great, so hats off to them.

I think Yes will be the first full-on prog group to get in (if Genesis doesn't make it), although Led Zep and Zappa did have prog 'tendencies'. I was a huge fan of Rush, they're great players, but the lyrics.....

King Crimson might have a shot, too.

I hate the idea and lable of 'progressive rock' with a passion as applied to Rush. The idea of lumping them in with Yes and King Crimson and such gives me hives, honestly. But they should be in.

Still, the HoF is a joke and a horror, all at once. I've never been as disappointed in a day out as when I went there a couple of years ago. I'm just glad the Great Lakes Science Center was next door so I could reinvigorate my brain with something worthwhile immediately following.

Hmm - I would think it would be RHCP, KISS, LL Cool J, ABBA, and the Hollies.

RHCP - they deserve it, as far as "it" goes - talented, innovative, successful and durable. A shoe-in.

KISS - I haven't liked them since I was 12 and I find their crass commercialism and boorish boy's fantasy personalities depressing and offensive, but they were innovative, successful and durable, so I guess, in their way, they are talented. I can't see them not getting in.

LL Cool J - foundational to hip-hop and rap, and he built a lot of his early stuff on cool rock beats. And Mama Said Knock You Out just rocks.

ABBA - much respect here. I don't seek them out, but I got my share of immersion at the height of their popularity. As pop craftsmen, they are at the top of the game. If they aren't in automatically, something's wrong - and yeah, I know how silly that sounds...

The Hollies - I feel like there is a Laurel Canyon mafia with the RRHoF and Graham Nash would get the extra nod. Solid singles as a group...

I would love to see the Chantels get in, but as there is an Early Influences category, maybe they should sidestep the ballot and put them in there. The definition says the artists are those "whose music predated rock and roll but had an impact on the evolution of rock and roll and inspired rock's leading artists," but in my opinion Wanda Jackson does not "predate" rock and roll.

If I had a vote: Genesis, Hollies, Darlene Love, Stooges, LL Cool J.

Sorry, forgot to add "...assuming the artist is not already dead". I suspect the availability of artists who consider him or her major influence as performers is a consideration as well. Laura Nyro is one of those artists who is far more influential than her record sales would indicate. She may have sold only 2000 copies of a record, but - like the MC5 - every one of those buyers bought a guitar.

I'm one of the few who are thrilled to see Jimmy Cliff get in. IMHO, he has one of the finest voices in pop music history.

As for KISS not making it? They are a novelty band, the music is shit. And RHCP is just meh.
