I once worked (briefly) for a man who claimed that the final fight leading to his divorce was on this very subject. I’ve also personally witnessed two different couples argue (one rather vehemently) about this. I happen to have an opinion about how TP should be hung, but not strong enough to pick a fight over. In my experience the men all prefer the TP the same way as each other, so I’m curious if there’s a real trend here.
My “prediction”:
Men: TP should come off the top of the roll.
Women: TP should come off the bottom of the roll.
I think it should come from the bottom. My husband doesn’t think about it when he puts on a new roll - I’m sure he has no preference. It doesn’t bother me enough to change it when it’s on the other way, though.
I’m a woman and said the bottom because I used to care. I don’t care much anymore. I live alone and don’t put it on that roller thing because the towel rack is right above it and damp towels hanging on top of toilet paper = fail.
I’m not sure I could live with someone who thought this was important.
I’m a woman, and obviously, it should come over the top. That way, you can always see the end of the paper. Depending on how it tears and how much the paper clings to itself, it will usually be somewhere on the front of the roll, or hanging down.
If you load the roll the other way, you have to scrabble around between the roll and the wall feeling for the end, or spin the roll until you find it. It’s like installing your refrigerator facing the wall, with *just *enough room to squeeze in and open it. The thing you want to access should face out.
Not only that, but if you take hot showers, tp loaded to unroll under the bottom will stick to the wall when it’s humid, and be clammy and wet. Tp over the top rolls free and dry.
IMHO people who prefer it under the bottom simply haven’t closely observed the consequences.
Your nomenclature is scwewy. “off the top/off the bottom?” Toilet paper always departs from the side of the roll; the question is whether the toilet paper should hang down on the side of the roll near the wall, or the side far from the wall.
And I won’t go so far as to declare a universal “should,” but IMHO it’s slightly easier to find the free end if it’s hanging in plain view instead of out of sight behind the roll.
Male here. And it just looks better when hung off the bottom. But this is about number 1 billion on the list of things I care about. The idea of fighting, let alone divorcing over this seems ludicrous.
Another vote for this one.
I prefer it to come off the top of the roll, because it’s easier to grab the free end and yank. Unfortunately, my cats agree.
Printed toilet paper appears to be designed to fall on the side away from the wall (off the top, in the OP’s terminology), so presumably that’s what the manufacturers intend. Since they’re the experts in this important matter, I’ll go with them.
