They don’t do spin-offs like they used to do in the 70s, I guess it tends to weaken the original show, but here’s a question for you.
Which character from a show would you like to see in a spin off. It can be a current or older show?
So which character would you like to see in his/her own show, and do you think that character would be strong enough to carry a show.
Now I love South Park’s, Butters. I would love to see him have his own show. I don’t know if he’s strong enough to carry it all by himself, but I’d like for him to have a go of it.
I read somewhere yesterday (was it here?) that Jeff and Lester from Chuck could probably carry their own show. It would be interesting to see what they’d come up with.
Several seasons of Monk ago, DJ Qualls played a rival Private Investigator solving a puzzle-based crime. I think that would be pretty cool to see as a show.
A friend and I were discussing potential Doctor Who spinoffs after noticing that K-9 had recently been added to the list of companions who’ve gotten their own (the others, of course, being Jack Harkness with Torchwood and Sarah Jane Smith with the Sarah Jane Adventures).
Some potential ones come up with:
A series featuring Rose, set in Pete’s World. Local version Doctor could have a supporting role. (Since Tennant wants to take a break from Who for a while, at least, some explanation for Metacrisis Doctor not being around would have to be concocted, of course.) This is also my idea for how they could shake up the Doctor light episodes…Do a couple episodes of the series in Pete’s World, and you can have it Doctor light, without actually lacking the Doctor - he could be on a different regeneration, or even have regenerated differently, so they could give Matt Smith some time off and still have the Doctor.
A series following Martha and Mickey. (Smith and Jones would be an obvious title choice, even if they already use it for an episode of the series.)
A series following Lady Catherine, his one-off companion from Planet of the Dead. She could [del]hook up[/del]travel with Jenny from the Doctor’s Daughter, for added fun.
Speaking of one-off companions, Astrid could host an interesting anthology series set in the Who-verse. (Unlike the others, she’s sort of prevented from interfering by her current circumstances, thus the anthology setup.)
In How I Met Your Mother, Robin left for a newscaster job in Japan. It was a red herring, and she was back the next season. But I think that had she stayed there, it could have been an interesting spin-off.
An obvious one would be to do a spin-off-flash-back of the Final Five from Battlestar Galactica.
Dwight and Mose Schrute. You could show life on the beet farm, their interaction with friends and neighbors, the zany predicaments, their dating and love lives…it wouldn’t be a comedy…more like Friends if Rob Zombie directed it.
(After writing this, I just remembered that Rainn Wilson was in a Rob Zombie movie)
This is hard for me because even though I sometimes like the idea of a spin-off, it rarely works so well (with of course, some notable exceptions). After Friends ended, I loved the idea of Joey getting a spin-off, but the actual show was crap.
I’d hate to see my favorite characters ruined that way, so I am loathe to wish a spin-off on them, but…maybe Ted from How I Met Your Mother in a show about his life with their mother, or even Marshall and Lily after they moved on from the group. I would add Barney or Robin, but I think those characters wouldn’t have the same “oomph” if removed from the group.
I think a spin-off would work better with lesser known characters who maybe haven’t been as fleshed-out as they could have been in the original series, so maybe even Victoria (who was not the mother) would work.
And I don’t know why the only show I can think of is How I Met Your Mother. So maybe Sheldon or Leonard from The Big Bang Theory but I really think those characters would need to stay together for it to be funny.
Seeing as he’s appeared on more shows than any other character in history, I’d love to see Richard Belzer’s Detective Munch (L&O:SVU) have his own show.
I think Tamara Tunie (SVU’s M.E. Warner) could definitely carry a show on her own.
Hey, how 'bout Abby Sciuto (NCIS) and Penelope Garcia (Criminal Minds) starting their own freelance forensic consulting firm?
I’d have watched a spin-off of Gilmore Girls based around Lane and her band. Especially after the babies. I think a show following a mid-level pop rock band and a young couple with kids could be cool.
I also would have loved if they had found a way to write in Paris as their tour manager or April (Luke’s kid) as like a backup singer.
Right now I’d watch a show about David Wallace from the Office. Ex-CEO who has lost his company.
Instead of the Cleveland Show, I wish they would have done a newsroom Parody featuring Diane and Tom.
I wouldn’t mind seeing a show about Ari Gold from Entourage, but in reality, Entourade is two shows (one of which is in fact the Ari show) that often overlap.
Most of the shows I like are such ensembles, that it would stink to remove any member of the cast.
